  • Amazing Chateau, set in absolutely stunning surroundings. Unfortunately our itinerary had us only staying for a single night, but we are trying to find an excuse to return!

We were greeted by Joachim, who showed us to our room, and gave us TONS of local advice. He was extremely helpful.

The chateau was in a small and charming village, which had a nice-looking restaurant, although it is closed on Mondays, so we were unable to try it. Otherwise, the location is fairly rural, but then that's why you're looking at the chateau in the first place, right?!

The accommodation itself was outstanding. We stayed in the peacock room, but were the only people staying so we're invited to look all around the other rooms in the chateau. All of them were excellent and I would have been happy in every single one. The first floor is more traditional styling, and the second floor has more contemporary rooms. The bed was also incredibly comfortable!

Breakfast was laid on by Joachim, too, which really made us feel welcome. I wish we had been able to stay longer, but next time we are in the area, we will definitely stay again!

    A definite, in my opinion.

  • This place is paradise. We had some trouble finding it, but it was our fault not theirs. We have been staying mostly in inner urban apartments in France, so he Chateau ws a welcome break in beautiful countryside. It's eery bit as beautiful as it looks on the website' but theres no formality and it's a great opportunity to relax and enjoy beautiful surroundings. Joachim is a perfect host and is full of useful information. We particularly like the fact that it's as accessible to Beaune as it is to Dijon because we wanted to try the beautiful Bourgogne wines. Very highly recommended

  • We found the garden to be impressive and the host to be friendly. The town was rather small with a single nice restaurant with good food. The room had a nice view of the grounds but was sparsely furnished.
However, the bathroom was adjacent to our room, off a common hallway and was in need of paint as well as cosmetic repairs. Not what I expected for a dedicated bathroom. Some of the other rooms did have a private bath attached to the room, but ours at $178 per night did not.
The wifi works in the dining room only, not in the rooms.
Overall the house was adequate, but not impressive. Again a coat of paint would do wonders.
This being our first BnB, we choose not to complain, but rather enjoy our 2 day stay there.

  • Incredible Place, Incredible location, incredible people.
We upgraded to the "Honeymoon Suite" upon arrival as it was not much more than the standard room. This was one of the most beautiful rooms we have ever stayed in. Incredibly Romantic, felt like we were in a period drama Film! The chateau has had "minimal" restoration, but in a good way. The grounds and the view of the grounds from (most of) the rooms is breathtaking. You will most probably be greeted and looked after by Joachim. What an Awesome Guy!!! He knows much about the surrounding region, and really takes time to give you all the info you need. Relaxing is the key word to describe our experience here. There is a large Kitchen / Breakfast room, that you can use for any Self-Catering desires. This could be the ultimate picnic location Anywhere!
Make sure you make the 20min drive to Chateauneuf-en-Auxois for the food and the scenery. Spectacular. Lovely driving roads in between!

  • Let's just start with the bottom line: this was one of the best stays we've ever had, if not *the* best. The chateau itself is absolutely stunning and pictures cannot do it justice. We were lucky and went towards the tail-end of peak season, so we were one of the two parties in the house and had tons of space and quiet (though I imagine it is always extremely quiet, given the location). The rooms are lovely and kept very clean. Great common areas for breakfast (fresh pastries and bread were provided every morning as part of the stay) and lounging. The property is gorgeous - 8 acres of gardens, ponds, and rolling green hills. Just breathtaking. Clemence, our host, was such a joy to talk to and could not have been more helpful. Cannot say enough about this place! Highly, highly recommended if you're looking to experience France outside of the traditional locations.

  • Being new Airbnb users, this was a great first experience. The grounds were lovely, quiet and tranquil. Clemence really took care of us with anything that we needed. Breakfast (and coffee) were delicious. We would definitely go again - in a heartbeat. It was such a wonderful way to explore the region. Visiting the vineyards of Burgundy to end the day at the Chateau. We almost felt as if we were nobility! :) We can't wait to return and would highly recommend staying at Chateau de Barbirey. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

  • Charming chateau with lovely grounds. My husband and I had a wonderful time staying here while we explored Burgundy!

  • A genuinely wonderful place to stay. Our only regret is that it was too brief. We will be back!

  • There were 3 of us in our group and we all shared the Peacock room, which was fabulous! The Chateau is such a beautiful country home and the perfect landing spot after a long day of touring around. The grounds are truly dreamy with photo opportunities everywhere. One of my favorite things to do was just stroll around the grounds and in the beautiful little town. Although the chateau is still undergoing some renovations, we were very comfortable and well taken care of. It was nice to have use of the guest kitchen for making easy dinners. We enjoyed being able to purchase a bottle of wine from the chateau to enjoy in the evening.

Our hosts were very helpful and accomodating and we appreciated their recommendations for site seeing, etc. The light breakfast in the morning was very nice and we enjoyed talking with the other guests.

I hope to enjoy the chateau again in the future! Out of our 10 day trip in France, the Burgundy area was truly magical and my favorite part of the entire trip!

  • Wow. This was a jaw-dropping experience, a grand summation of how great Airbnb can be in connecting curious travelers with exceptional opportunities. The chateau is nestled in one of the many small towns that run along or nearby the Ouche River, close to the many famous winemaking towns of Burgundy. The chateau is convenient to Beaune and Dijon, and if you rent a car (which you'll want to if you're traveling around this part of France), the chateau is a fine base to explore the region.

As for the chateau itself: words don't quite do it justice. The main house sits proudly on a hill overlooking a pond and an extensive network of gardens and walking trails; next to it, a garden yielding all manner of fruits and vegetables is carefully tended. Geese—grumpy geese!—wander about the property. Inside the chateau, our room was well-appointed, large, and very comfortable.

The hosts are wonderful—helpful, but as hands-off as you want them to be. Clemence gave us an extensive tour of the garden, the old outdoor kitchen, and the colombier, a cylindrical turret that once held pigeons but now holds something much more special. (What? You'll have to visit to find out!)

We spent hours wandering the grounds, enjoyed a delicious bottle of local wine at the town's only restaurant, and generally relished our time spent in this remarkable part of the world. The chateau de Barbirey is a special place.
