Interaction with Guests
As me and my wife and 2 young daughters live only 5 mins walk from the house we are able to support your stay as much as you wish. We enjoy getting to know our guests, but also respect your privacy. We usually greet you, show you around the house and help you organize trips and answer any questions you may have about the Lake and help you with what you might need. the house comes with a in depth information booklet to help you get the most from your stay at " the most beautiful lake in the world".
The neighborhood of Jucanya is well known for being friendly, safe and quiet. Few Tuc tucs pass by the house, which makes it even more peaceful.
A Tuc tuc from the nearby corner to anywhere in town costs Q5 (60 cents of $).
We expect our guests to treat the house and neighbors with respect. We of course will clean the house after your stay, but don't expect to clean up excessive mess and piles of dishes. We allow pets as long as informed before your stay, and as long as they don't stay in the bedrooms or on the furniture. We ask you to please smoke outside, especially outside of the bedrooms.
Staying at Casa Solhana was an absolute fantasy! The owners of this house have put so much care into the little details of every room, nook, and cranny. For example, one of the guest rooms had a lovely Gustav Klimt print that echoed the comfortable and beautiful local quilts on the beds. A usable fireplace decorates the living room that served to help tired travellers chill out on comfy couches. The master bedroom exceeds the coolness of the description on the house Air BnB site. We all thoroughly enjoyed reading in the variety of seating arrangements and hammock placed in the well tended gardens. If the owner is not in Panajachel when you stay here, you can be sure that a local friend of the family will make sure everything is running smoothly during your stay. Finally, when you wake in the morning or after a hard days' hike, you will totally enjoy what we all decided was the best shower in all of Guatemala!
The house was nearby the town of Panajacel.Juana met us and showed us around the house and was available if needed. The house was clean and spacious and we enjoyed our stay.
Traveling to foreign countries is always exciting but it can also be stressful when making plans for accommodations. There are so many options available here on airbnb. Keeping our needs in mind, I contacted at least five different hosts. All of whom responded relatively quickly including Matt even though he was traveling.
Casa Solhana was everything Matt describes here and more. Quite simply put in an email, he wrote "You'll love it", and we did!!
He arranged for Noe to pick up up at the airport and we were relieved to see his smiling face. He was a good driver and got us to Panajachel safely in the torrential down pours. When we arrived , Juana came out to greet us with an umbrella. The house smelled delicious. She had prepared a lasagna dinner.
Matt's home is welcoming, warm and cozy and had everything one could need. It was clean and beautifully decorated with large windows and Mayan art. The beds were comfy. The flowers in the garden were lovely.
Tucked away outside Pana, the neighborhood seemed quite safe and everyone we passed was friendly. There is some noise of tuk tuks now and then and barking dogs but that is to be expected, and not nearly as much as it would be in Pana.
It was only a 10 min. tuk tuk into town and a 5 minute walk to see the lake. The cemetery on the way is quite interesting. Matt has two bikes in good condition. The cell phone is such an extra special service to help guests communicate locally.
It was so relaxing to come home to Casa Solhana after a long day. We just loved the fireplace and the back patio with the awning even in the pouring rain. It was beautiful everyday (65*) from sunrise until about 2-3pm when the rains starts. Some days it would stop and others not so much.
Juana is a wonderful cook and a joyous lady. We enjoyed sharing cooking stories with her . Luckily my son speaks some Spanish which made the experience much easier for us in Pana.
Our visit was too short and I want to bring my whole family back to this lovely home when visiting Lake Atitlan again.
If you are trying to decide where to stay and reading this, Don't look any further, YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Thank you for sharing your charming home on airbnb, Matt and family.
We were met by Juana, she showed us around. Jose came a few times to clean up the yard and always asker if everything was ok. The neighborhood was good, it worked very well for us. The house was very comfortable , the yard very pleasant. We enjoyed staying there very much and hopefully we will stay there again on another trip.
Matt was an excellent host! He made sure we connected with the housekeeper and got checked in without an issue. The house is just gorgeous, the pictures truly don't do it justice! Between the garden, the beautiful rooms, and the location, we never wanted to leave. We highly recommend this location for your stay at Lake Atitlan!
My family and I truly enjoyed Casa Solhana and loved the peaceful setting. The house was super comfortable and has a lovely garden that we shared with hummingbirds, butterflies and a chocolate colored squirrel. Our grandson loved running around and made ample use of the slide and the sand box. The lake is is super close--only about a five minute walk from the house. A genuinely lovely place.
In terms of the house--it had everything we needed, and was beautifully appointed with artwork from Mexico and Central America. We felt completely at home.
Juana cooked Guatemalan dishes to die for--definitely something you should ask for if you are lucky enough to stay here. Her cooking was quite a treat and more affordable than eating at the local joints. José, the gardener, was extremely helpful and treated our grandson to homemade ice cream. Both of these individuals made our stay more comfortable and homey.
We have promised ourselves that we will be back!

About the Host, Matt
I live in Panajachel on Lake Atitlan with my wife and 2 young daughters. After travelling and working in tourism for many years I settled in Guatemala nearly 15 years ago and was involved in a well known Backpackers Hostel in Lanquin near to the beautiful Semuc Champey natural Park. Having lived in Lanquin for 10 years I built my house which I also rent on this site.... La Poza Riverside Cottage. I later moved to Panajachel with my family and recently renovated Casa Solhana.
I love travelling, nature, music and reading and of course spending time with my family and friends.
