Interaction with Guests
I live in this home, but you have your own private space, entry, lanai, and carport. I am a local girl born and raised right on this property. I would love to answer any questions you have about our island, and recommend places to see and things to do. If you like, I would love to pray and fellowship with you, as God leads.
Haiku is the neighborhood I grew up in. I love it! It is a small but growing community with still a lot of the old local families I know, and a lot of new neighbors moving in. We have a variety of restaurants from Japanese and Thai to American, Hawaiian,Vegetarian, Mexican, and local. There are 2 grocery stores, a post office, Postal Plus, massage and spa, hardware store, laundromat, doctor, thrift shop, video store, etc. We are the home of Haleakala Bike Company, where you can ride a bike down from Haleakala Crater back to Haiku. We also have our own zipline right up the road. Haiku is on the tropical side of the island, which means beautiful rainbows, flowers and plants, green grass, fruit trees, and cool tradewinds. It is 5 minutes away from beautiful beaches and surf spots, yet away from the tourist traps on Maui! Don't forget to hang with the 30+ turtles that swim to shore at sunset, 5 min. away! Twin Falls with its beautiful waterfalls and pools is less than 15 min. away, if you like to hike. The famous Jaws where surfers ride 30' waves is just 10 min. away! If you love to shop, Paia & Makawao towns are filled with interesting shops, art galleries, and restaurants, and just minutes away from Haiku. Come stay in Haiku, and be among the locals to experience the real Hawaii!!
There is a local bus transit a few minutes away from our home that will take you to every town on the island. However, we recommend you rent a car to save time, and to get to those places the bus does not go.
Other Things to Note
Airbnb does not collect our Hawaii State Tax of 13.42%, so I will need to take care of that when you arrive.
If you need anything, please call my home numb(phone number hidden) or cellphone at (phone number hidden) anytime of day or night.
Please let me know if you prefer to have my dog Lani (means Heaven) leashed during your stay. Most of the time she is now anyway because she has strayed off a few times! Be sure not to leave your shoes outside in case she is free. She is still teething! Also, Israel my cat will most likely try to befriend you too on your lanai, so let me know if you don't like cats, ok? Please help me train him to not enter your room, which he will try to do. Mahalo!
No smoking, drugs, or heavy alcohol.
No pets please....you may adopt our dog Lani and our cat Israel while you are here!

This place was pure heaven, the air is so fresh up here and quiet all you can hear are the birds chirping in the morning a natural alarm. Janice is a pure gem an angel, as I was a solo traveller with no car, she helped me with directions of were to go was volunteering to take me places. We had great laughs as she taught I was male from my name so she was so surprised to answer the door to an Irish female, her and her two lovely dogs made my start of my trip the most memorable. Also gave me some of her own delicious fruit from her garden. I will definitely be back and I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone.
Much love to Janice and her dogs,
Aunty Janice is an amazing host you will have on Maui. She greeted us with hugs and fresh fruit from her garden. She provided fresh pineapple, coffee and Portuguese Sauasae.
Janice was very warm and fun. She showed me how to cut down Bananas and fresh coconuts off of the tree.
I would recommend this for anyone that want to country view of the island.
We were very welcomed by Janice, despite arriving after and later than we had told her. We were needing to eat dinner and Janice texted some recommendations for restaurants in Haiku. [Colleen's Restaurant is wonderful, lots of locals also eat there.]
The room and bath are just as described in the listing; we stayed in the Green Room and it is very spacious and comfortable, and the lanai is very private, considering the other room and lanai are separated only by a bamboo wall.
Janice is very generous with the breakfast and snack items, as well as beach towels, an umbrella and cooler, and lots of closet space. She even supplies slippers and flip-flops to wear inside and outside, respectively, to maintain the Hawaii-wide tradition of no outside shoes inside.
She shared/supplied local fruits and coconut [and showed us how to open it!] and it was nice that she shared her experiences growing up in Haiku. She is a wealth of information and island lore.
The house is a little tricky to find, being on a side road off the main road but call Janice if you get lost - don't rely on your GPS cause it will lead you astray.
Great location for exploring the east side of the island and up-country!
Janice was a perfect hostess. This trip was planned as a trio birthday celebration and when we got there she has posted a Happy Birthday sign in our room. So sweet. Janice was wonderful with offering local tips and even gave us a hula lesson AND shared a safety video with us. A great short video on staying safe in the surf and what you should know about your new surroundings in Hawaii. She went above and beyond. The room was perfect and the location great for getting around the island. So close to Paia, where we ate at least once a day. This trip was life changing and Janice was a huge partt of that. Thank you Janice for sharing your dream home and island with us.
Our gorgeous host Janice was the kindest and most considerate lady we were blessed to have. She was very thoughtful and took into great consideration our 7 year old with making sure he was also very comfortable and showed him all the great things on her property such as getting a coconut down and drinking it, picking fruit off the tree and trying to get "Pebbles" (Janice's adopted dog) to warm up to us before we left. We were so spoiled with having breakfast for us every morning...such a relief not having to think of it and wondering where to go to eat every morning. The room was immaculately clean and well furnished with everything we needed. Janice thought of all the small extras that made our stay less stressful. We fell in love with Janice's puppy Bamboo and miss him very much. Thank you so much Janice for your kindness and huge heart. Thanks for teaching me the hula...still laugh at it now!! Highly recommend this wonderful place....you'll certainly go back. We had the most amazing time...
Janice was an amazing hostess. She went out of her way to make our first trip to Maui one to remember. Janice even put up happy birthday posters and fresh flowers for my husband's birthday.
My best experience in Maui! We are from Beijing. First,we were amazed by this clean bamboo house and beautiful backyard. Second, the room is well equiped with all you need even for the beach! the beach towels, mats, chair, big beach bag and paddle! Third but not the least, the breakfast provided by landlord is great! every morning we have fresh eggs, bread, juice, fruits, milk, sausage. With little cute kitchenett, we had verygood breakfasts to start our new day! Janice is such a nice person that she makes you feels like at home!
I am a local Maui lady, born and raised here in upcountry Haiku. I love living here, and love all my neighbors and friends in this community. I truly believe Maui No Ka Oi, which means Maui is the best! It is the most beautiful island, offering the most diversity of terrain and weather. My favorite thing to do is watching my plants and trees flower and bear fruit. I love discovering new fruits, flowers, and plants, and learning how to grow them. I am a mother of 6 children who have all flown out of the nest, and are grown, getting married, and having children. I have 2 beautiful granddaughters, Kealia who's 5 and Wailea who's 2, who live on the Big Island. I love flying over to visit them! Most of all, I love Jesus, and He loves me! "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me!"
