Could be a lovely place if some time was put into it. We experienced a non-flushing toilet, centipedes in the bathroom, dead mouse under the sagging bed, sheets that were 100 years old, not a clean place, thin walls so that everything that goes on above your head can be heard. Good for students? maybe....
For the price we expected cleanliness, a decent bed and a working toilet. Come on folks, fix your place up to a reasonable level.
So sorry this didn't work out, and was a disappointing experience for both parties. Thank you for your feedback. To address your comments:
1) A toilet that keeps filling up is annoying. Unfortunately, as you already know, a plumber misdiagnosed this issue. While you stayed there Neil changed the flapper, and when this didn't work, he changed the entire toilet. For the inconvenience of having to turn off the water, we refunded you $100.
2) We addressed the issue of you finding the bed too soft. (no previous complaints in 3 years).
3) Very occasionally centipedes, little field mice and other critters do make the way in, since this is on 3 acres in a rural setting. (No snakes and nothing dangerous on beautiful Kauai)
4) Re your comment on thin walls, whenever there are two levels, sound unfortunately transfers. Guests staying in the upper level are asked to be mindful, and there is sound proofing between the levels.
5) We have a number of sets of linens and change out pillows, mattress pads, sheets, towels etc regularly. Thank you for letting us know the ones you had need to go.
Neil and I truly want people to have a good time on Kauai. Thankfully many other guests believe that for under $100/ nt this is a unique and special place on 3 acres with great ocean and sunset views. We're sorry this wasn't your experience.
We enjoyed the quiet, laid back, and secluded feel of Neil & Sharon's oceanview downstairs apartment. We loved waking up to the sounds of birds, quail and yes, even the roosters. We loved the sunsets, and sleeping with the window wide open, and keep the door open when we were at home. This of course, invited a few friendly critters into our place, but we didn't mind -- it is nature after all, and the critters lived here first. We gently escorted them back outside. Neil made it easy for us to get in touch with him if we needed anything -- which we didn't ... Everything was great !
What a beautiful space to retreat in Kauai! Neil and Sharon really made us feel welcome and at home right away. Great place and very serene - a nice escape.
This studio is amazing, a hidden gem on the sunny part of Kauai. We arrived on Christmas day, and were immediately greeted by an impeccably clean and beautiful studio, with (as promised) ocean-front views (complete with a hammock on the patio) and live flowers all around the place. The studio was much roomier that we expected, with good pots and pans, and the essentials to cook dinners for the two of us. The location was so nice and quiet that it was hard for us to actually want to leave to explore the rest of Kauai. Thank you, Neil and Sharon, for a lovely place to stay in "paradise."
Love having guests like you stay! You appreciate the unique style Neil has created and the beauty of the land AND you make wonderful suggestions, like getting a bigger pasta pot/ stirfry pan so that future guests can make use of these. Thanks too for the private FYI about your little critter visitors that you shoo'ed out- it is the country and nothing thankfully is dangerous (I'm thanking you publicly because while you gave this feedback to us as an FYI and in private, it is important that potential guests know this is a rural/natural setting) You are welcome back any time!
Lovely place! We loved the setting...back in the lush country. It felt very private which we loved. Distance to food and activities was fine (5 minutes to Kalaheo or 25 to Lihue). Very nice shower and good water pressure. Bed was a little hard for me, but didn't bother my husband. Laundry facility was very accommodating, Neil left it stocked with detergent and softener, a small rack to hang a few small items. Beach towels provided. Snorkel gear was kept outside for shared use, but would need a good rinse before using. Our ONLY complaint with this space were the bugs. We had quite a few milipedes throughout our stay. Neil was very helpful when we brought it to his attention and he even offered that we could move upstairs for 2 of our 3 remaining nights (last night was booked). We decided to stay put, but the upstairs is lovely. Book that instead if it is available! Neil is wonderful to work with and had many suggestions for us. We truly enjoyed our time here. Thanks, Neil!
Great guests, who are welcome back any time! And, a note to potential future guests we don't advertise this unit as having a washer and dryer, nor as being equipped with snorkel gear and beach goodies. The latter are generously left by previous guests for future guests to enjoy . Amy, we appreciate your feedback and for choosing to stay with us! Neil enjoyed talking story with you two!
Host did a great job at welcoming us. Was in contact prior to his own out-of-town trip, answered all questions, and left a wonderful woman ( their friend, Mary), in charge to help us upon arrival and thereafter. The spirit of genuine Hawaiian "Aloha" was shown throughout our
stay. Mary helped and informed us in ways that we appreciated greatly.
Directions given to the home were easy to follow, the location was lovely.
Neil is a nice guy, our check-in and check-out were very friendly. The studio is well equipped and nicely situated in a remote neighborhood. Very quiet area. "Garden view" (a nice one) would better describe this lower part of the house, I guess the view on the ocean is much better on the top level of the house (which also looks more comfy). Expect a "cabin in the woods" kind of feeling: the windows are typical Hawaii "jalousie windows" so the place is a bit humid and some bugs or ants can be seen. However a very pleasant stay!
Thanks for staying with us and for the feedback which helps the 'right' guests select this unusual (website hidden) The netting around the bed is decorative, and we have been enjoying working in the garden and generally taking care of maintenance issues thanks to specific feedback like yours.

Thirty year resident of Kauai who has built various simple Balinese/Polynesian/ Swiss Family Robinson style timber homes in beautiful island settings.
First came to Kauai in 1980 as part of long world wide surf odyssey - was on his way to Australia, but fell in love with the island, the way of life and spirit of aloha.
Met South African born wife, Sharon, in 2003 on the island. They married on the beach in Poipu in 2005.
Both love the island, love hearing the varied fascinating stories people live, and both love to read and travel!
