Spacious and peaceful old cottage in the heart of the country. Just 6k from Kilkenny city. Numerous ring forts ,ancient ruins and the famous Dunmore caves all nearby with rivers for fishing and woodlands for exploring.
My home was historically belonging to the ancient Christian site in Ballyfoyle where there is still a Church today.
It has a very peaceful tranquil air.
Your bedroom has two single beds. You have a private bathroom but not an en-suite.
Guests are welcome to relax in the sitting room which has an open fire and they may also use the kitchen.
This is an area of rolling hills and valleys hence it has a feel of times past in regard to the landscape. You will see sheep, cattle, horses and donkeys in the fields. You could meet hens, ducks and geese scratching along the roadside. Farmyard dogs will be busy with their owners driving around on tractors or herding in the fields.
You will pass ancient burial grounds surrounded by stone walls on hills in rolling green fields. The river Dinin is nearby. You can cycle, walk or drive on up the way to Muckalee and admire the wonderful views over county Kilkenny, Laois and Carlow.
Dunmore Caves are just about 3k away. Jenkinstown Park is 3.5k to the west.
Castlecomer is only ten minutes drive north where you can visit the Craft Yard and Discovery Park and learn the ancient and modern history of this once vibrant mining town. Then take a stroll over the bridge and on up the lovely wide tree lined street and soak up the atmosphere with a glass of Guinness and a chat with the locals.
And I haven't even told you about Kilkenny city yet !! Ten minutes drive in the other direction.
You will need your own transport in this rural area. There is plenty of parking at my house. It is a great area to cycle in. I can drop you into Kilkenny if you want a late night and taxi home.
Other Things to Note
It is 6km into Kilkenny city which is the nearest town, about ten minutes by car. I can drive you in if you want to have a drink and then you can get a taxi home.
Hazel was absolutely wonderful. I really wish I stayed there longer! The place was incredibly cute and definitely made me feel at home. The water was hot and the place was warm. The bedroom was adorable and had a great view.
Hazel was absolutely lovely! I loved chatting with her and spending time with her. She made an incredible breakfast and helped me navigate town and the Dunmore caves. I truly could not give a higher review for Hazel.
We had a great experience here with Hazel! Her cottage is so sweet and cozy! The beds were really comfy too and the location is really close to Kilkenny. Hazel was great and we had a good chat, and she made an excellent breakfast for us including yummy plums from her orchard. Don't hesitate to stay here. If I am ever near Ballyfoyle, I'll be returning!
We loved to stay at Hazels house and have to thank her for her hospitality! It was warm, cozy and we felt like home :)
We have had a wonderful time with Hazel ! She is a charming woman full of life and stories. Her house had all the charm we had expected !
We loved staying in Hazel's cosy house. It was comfortable and peaceful and we slept really well. Although it's in the middle of the countryside, it's an easy and quick drive to Kilkenny.
Just watch out that the photo is of the back of the house, so it's not what you'll see if you're looking for the house from the road (but Hazel's directions were very easy to follow otherwise).
Hazel is a very nice host, very friendly and welcoming. Her house is realy lovely and cosy. Close to Kilkenny, next to a church, a quiet place to spend a good night. Hazel made us a wonderful breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade porridge. We highly recommend Hazel's cottage.
Hazel was delightful and her cottage charming. We had a lovely spacious room that was very private. We had access to a downstairs bath that had all that we needed. We were greeted with tea and bread. Hazel gave us some different choices for breakfast and we opted for porridge which was wonderful. Hazel is very knowledgable and was able to share the history of Ireland with us. The setting was unique with the old church next door and she had a lovely garden.

I am an artist who works from home. I have a grown up family and three wonderful grandchildren. I once upon a time took off traveling round the world for nearly a year. I loved the freedom and simplicity of knowing you carried all you really needed in your rucksack.
I now look forward to meeting the world at home !
