My wife and I stayed at Waldo's Pitirre house for our honeymoon. It was awesome! First of all, let me say that Waldo was extremely helpful. I sent him many emails full of questions before our trip, and almost every time he responded with helpful advice within the hour. I think Waldo knows everyone on the island. I couldn't find a car, and he found me one at the last minute, from the "lady who sells the smoothies" (she is also very helpful, by the way...). Anyway, the vacation was perfect and exactly what we were looking for. We picked up groceries from the local supermarket and cooked almost every single meal, using the very well-equipped kitchen in Pitirre. Breakfast was especially good, because we got to drink Puerto Rican coffee, and eat star fruit freshly picked from Waldo's star fruit tree (we also picked some limes from his lime tree to help flavor a spaghetti dinner!) We spent most days exploring the island, and when our car rental ran out, we rented bikes from Blackbeard bicycles (extremely good service there, I would highly recommend it), and most of the beaches are within easy biking distance from Pitirre (the entrance to the Park is right down the street - great riding in there). Pitirre was so good, that my wife and I would actually look forward to coming back after a day at the beach, because it was so relaxing to sit on the porch, or in the hot tub and just look out across the island to the ocean. There is many more things that I could say, but I'll end there and just say that we can't wait to come back!
Great ! mission accomplished I'm so glad all went well and that you will have great memories of this very special week...now have established a very solid foundation for the rest of your life, Ileana and I are working on our 48th year....so hang in the there...hope to see oyu back to celebrate an anniversary sometime soon...waldo
We normally don't leave reviews, but we had such an excellent time at Waldo's that we felt we must share our experience. We arrived to Pitirre where we met Ileana (who is the sweetest lady- Make sure you check out her glass studio while you are there!). She gave us a quick tour of Pitirre. Pitiree is perfect for couples, quiet and cozy. I honestly got some of the best sleep I have ever had in my life there! After our tour, Waldo arrived and shared with us some tips for things to do and see around the island. We pretty much did everything he recommended and had a wonderful time overall! We were also lucky enough to be there on a Wednesday when Waldo cooks his famous paella, don't miss it! Pitirre is also centrally located so it was very easy for us to get around the island. Also located at the bottom of the hill is a convenient store that has pretty much everything you will need- there aren't many places on the island you can stop and grab a snack or drink at so this was definitely a plus! We also used the kitchen quite a lot. Every morning we would take some of our dinner left overs and add an egg to it for our breakfast. Saved us a lot of money. We also took advantage of the lime tree in the side yard that Waldo told us about. We would cut a little slice and add it to our Medalla- really delicious. The house is also equipped with snorkels, flippers, coolers and umbrella so packing for the beach is easy! Overall we had such an amazing time staying at Pitiree. I have already recommended it to many people and would go back in a heart beat! Waldo and Ileana are truly genuine, amazing people!
I feel honored that you decided to break your rule and leave a comment, they mean a lot to us...we strive to make everything excellent and affordable borrowing experiences from my international travel and then, yes, your comments.
that's why we are confident that for the price there is no better place to stay in (website hidden) was also our pleasure to host you and have you share a little of our paradise. We do hope to see you again in the very near future.
My boyfriend and I stayed 2 nights in the Pitirre apartment at Birdsnest, a simple, studio-style room with a full kitchen. The bed was big, the kitchen well set up, the night sounds of frogs soothing (but very prominent!), Waldo and Ileana helpful and everything was clean. The corner store is quite well-stocked. **note it takes 3 hours to get from Vieques to the San Juan airport by ferry/taxi, so take a late evening flight out or be prepared to take a 6:30 am ferry**
It's very worth going, though! Beautiful place and so peaceful. I'd rent a scooter or car as soon as you're able since the island isn't huge, but there are things to see in lots of places!
We had a perfect vacation at Pitirre on Vieques Island. The house was clean, well maintained, very secure and easy to access. Tree frogs are a bit loud, but made you feel like you were sleeping in the rain forest! We definitely will go back. Waldo is a superb host!
This island is like going back in time a few decades. Beautiful beaches, pristine water, locally owned businesses - no franchises! The locals are so friendly and nice. Please go visit before it becomes overflowing with tourists!
Thanks for the kind response. Sorry I could not spend more time with you but I knew you were going to do well.....I will definitely look forward to see you back here again. Please remember when you cone to PR you are IN the tropics ergo all the tropical agenda.... Ciao wsldo
Waldo was on of the most thorough hosts I have ever met with. He contacted me multiple times before we arrive and provided ample details on car rentals, restaurants, navigation, everything. When we arrived and self-checked-in, there was plenty of literature and information on Vieques available.
Pitirre is not a giant studio so I would not sleep more than 4 here, but there were great, homey amenities. Multiple grills, terraces, the hot tub, all of the beach gear, abundant towels (very important in a beach setting), multiple seating areas and hammocks and great views.
We cooked 2 meals here pretty comfortably. Definitely something to consider since not everything is open all of the time.
Really wish we could have met Waldo in person because their guest book ( dates back 6 years) had nothing but great things to say about him, his wife, and his paella! Definitely recommend.
Waldo and Ileana were the best hosts - kind and engaging when we saw them, but mostly we didn't see them unless we wanted to. The apartment was perfect, just big enough without being overwhelming. It was clean and the kitchen had all the amenities we needed to cook 3 dinners in the apartment. It was located super conveniently to both Isabel II and Esperanza, and just down the street from a corner store to pick up essentials. Or you could just live off the limes, star fruits, and other fruits growing in their yard. However, you definitely need a car (this is true nearly anywhere you stay) and you should reserve it as soon in advance as you can. There's not really public transit on the island.
I can't say enough good things about how relaxing and enjoyable it was to stay at Pitirre. Let me put it this way: We're already making (serious) plans to come back!
A note: on Wednesdays, Waldo cooks paella at a local restaurant. You don't want to miss it, and you don't want to forget to make a reservation. We ALMOST missed out on the best meal of our trip!
If you are looking a great place to stay in Vieques that makes you feel right at home, stop searching and book Pitirre or Gaviota right now.
Even before you arrive, Waldo and Ileana treat you with a very warm and welcoming attitude. They literally make you feel as if you were right at home. The attention to detail is out of this world. Pitirre was exactly what I was looking for and had a great porch with a view, spacious bathroom and great space to move around. Pitirre was spotless with regards to cleanliness which was a HUGE plus in my book. They even provide you with beach chairs, beach umbrella, cooler, snorkel, beach towels, etc! This was really unexpected and a great surprise to say the least. Pitirre is about a 3-5 minute from the best beaches in Vieques and has a convenience store less than a minute away for buying anything you might need.
Waldo and Ileanna were VERY flexible with the check in and check out times and I could not have been happier with my short stay. Needless to say, when I go back to Vieques I plan on staying there again without thinking twice about it. I am also recommending it to all my friends who plan on staying there.
My two girlfriends and I had an amazing time at Waldo's Pitirre. The place is exactly what you'd want for a relaxing, simple, stunning vacation. The room is pretty basic and very comfortable. The three of us were able to comfortably share the large bed in our guest house and had ample space to relax. The ceiling fans kept the place cool and the evening chorus of insects, frogs, and birds were soothing and beautiful. The beach chairs, snorkel equipment, and cooler provided by Waldo aided in some excellent days on the beach. Most notably, the property is gorgeous and spacious. We enjoyed our time on the patio, hanging in the hammocks, picking star fruit and limes from the trees, and soaking in the Jacuzzi in the evenings. The location of the Pitirre is perfect, as it's secluded, yet close to everything. Renting an SUV is a must for exploring the island and its beautiful beaches. We also appreciated having cooking facilities and a small market next door. And finally, Waldo is an exceptional host. He's got a great personality and a fine sense of humor. He's easy to reach and will answer all questions and provide fantastic recommendations! Stay at the Pitirre... it's magical :)
This was my first Airbnb experience, and if the rest are like this, I can't imagine any other way to travel.
My girlfriend and I decided to stay Pitirre for a romantic getaway during our vacation to Puerto Rico.
It was incredible. My only complaint is that we didn't spend enough time here!
Waldo was an extremely gracious host, who not only gave us plenty of recommendations for things to do, but also made sure we knew where were going, how to ask for directions, and what to look out for.
Pitirre is only a 15 minute cab ride from the ferry (just ask to go to Birdnest up the road from Colmado Mambo), and is located in the middle of Vieques, making it easy to get to almost anywhere. It's a great home-base to explore the island.
My only advice is to take some time to really enjoy Pitirre. Take a night to watch the sunset over the Ocean from the hot tub, or barbecue out on the terrace above your room.
This is the perfect place to come and relax, so make sure you take the time to do so.
As for Vieques, I have literally never been to a more picturesque beach than Sun Bay. There are so many incredible things to do on this tiny little island that you really need to check it out for yourself.
I 100% recommend staying with Waldo and Pitirre for your next relaxing or romantic getaway.
Hi folks....thanks a lot for your visit...and thanks for your concern about Ileana's well being....she's ok....she needs to have more Cub Libres (hahaha)....we love this island for the very same reasons you list, it's small and it's easy to get around. Sunbay has been our sunday beach for years just because it's an untirering sight....hope you return soon...and definitely we will have a room for you....ciao...waldo
We only had two short days in Vieques, but Waldo's Bird's Nest was a great roost for our brief getaway. We were welcomed on arrival and given a lay of the land and all it has to offer. A beautiful mountain vista from our own private porch. The room was simple with a large bed, bathroom and kitchen. We were provided with folding chairs, a cooler and towels which were a huge perk for our days at the beach.
Unfortunately we did not get to see much of Waldo, but we will be sure to book an extra couple days on our next visit. Lots to see and do on this remote island, we can not wait to return!
Hi Lena.....bussy bussy and enjoying Vieques....next time i hope we can spend some time together on the open terrace and share some wine....thanks foyur visit and I'll take you on your word "but we will be sure to book an extra couple days on our next visit"...ciao...waldo
