Where you’ll be

Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The Paqueta and Pampulha neighborhood is an administrative (regional) region of Belo Horizonte, located under the coordinates 19° 51' 44" S 43° 58' 14" O, being the artificial lagoon of the same name being one of the main tourist attractions of this city. In it are located the stadiums Governador Magalhães Pinto (Mineirão) and Journalist Felipe Drummond (Mineirinho) and several clubs. The International Tour of Pampulha is held annually, on Avenida Otacílio Negrão de Lima, which bypasses the lagoon. Also at the turn of the year there is the largest fireworks show in the state, bringing together about 300 thousand people in the surroundings.

The region is also home to the campus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the Municipal Zoo and Pampulha Airport, the most affluent airport in Belo Horizonte and that has recently become a cause of concern, given its proximity to the urban area of the capital and as such, several flights have been transferred to the Confins International Airport. There is also a gastronomic center, with several typical and regional food restaurants.

Pampulha Architecture Set

Church of San Francisco of Assisi
The artificial lagoon was built in the 1940s when the mayor was Juscelino Kubitschek. To compose its surroundings Oscar Niemeyer designed an architectural set that became a reference and influenced the entire Brazilian Modern Architecture. The church of San Francisco de Assis, the Art Museum, the Baile House, and the Yacht Tennis Club are all part of the set. Burle enti's gardens, Portinari painting and sculptures of Ceschiatti, Zamoiski, and José Pedrosa complete and value the project designed for the lagoon. The waterfront of Pampulha concentrates a number of leisure options, such as the Mineirinho gym, the Zoo, the Lagoon Equestrian Preparing Center and slopes for cycling and walking. It's also home to the Governor Magalhães Pinto Stadium, better known as "Mineirão."

In 2013, the City of Belo Horizonte expressed interest in applying the UNESCO Heritage Site of Pampulha Architecture. A UNESCO representative visited the area in 2015, year in which Pampulha was the only nominee. To ensure better heritage conditions, map will receive a major renovation lasting two years from July 2016, and two squares in the region will have their landscaping projects recovered.

St. Francis of Assisi
The church of Saint Francis of Assisi, with its rounded lines, denounce the boldness of Oscar Niemeyer and are a landmark of Brazilian modern architecture. Curves are a counterpoint to the straight angle. Inside there are 14 panels that portray the Via Sacra, considered the masterpiece of Portinari. Outside are the gardens crafted by Burle enti and mosaics on the side facades.

Belo Horizonte-Pampulha Airport
Belo Horizonte/Pampulha Airport - Carlos Drummond de Andrade, better known as Pampulha Airport (IATA: PLU, ICAO: SBBH), is a Belo Horizonte domestic airport, one of the most traditional airports in Brazil. It is located in Pampulha, in the north area of Belo Horizonte, 8,3 km from the city center. With the growth of Belo Horizonte, Pampulha became a central airport, inserted in the urban context of the metropolis, being for a long time the busiest airport in the state of Minas Gerais until the transfer of national flights to Confins, in 2005. Today, it is the third busiest airport in the state in number of passengers, behind Confins and Uberlandia.

The port complex of Pampulha is located in an area of approximately 2 million square meters, with a runway with capacity for 25 operations of landing/departure per hour, and a passenger terminal with capacity to serve 400 passengers per hour. Since 2009, the airport has been equipped with landing systems by LOC and DME instruments, which allow the airport to operate in adverse conditions with the same level of operating security and helps to decrease the number and closing time of the airport due to the bad weather.

Currently, Pampulha Airport has some regular flights connecting Belo Horizonte to cities in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais and neighboring states. However, most of the operations are in general, which includes executive airline, which represents more than 70% of all of Pampulha's aircrafts movements. The airport also stands out as a major helicopter maintenance center, executive aircrafts, and small commercial aircrafts.

In Pampulha is also the Belo Horizonte Air Base, along with the Airlines Education and Adaption Center, which is the main center for training of Brazilian Air Force officers, responding for 76% of the upper level of the institution's upper level staff.

In recent years, a lot of police and speculation revolves around the reopening of Pampulha for national flights. On the one hand, executives, business entities and airlines have advocated for the release of flights from the airport to nearest capitals, with the reasoning of earning time on business travel and disputes to Greater Belo Horizonte. On the other hand, the population next to the airport is against any type of increase in the number of flights, mainly due to the noise from the aircrafts. Others still feel that this could impair the development of Confins International Airport. This issue was once the subject of hearings in the City of Belo Horizonte and the Minas Gerais Legislative Congress, with the involvement of the State Government and also of the City of Belo Horizonte in the discussions.
