Staying in Luca's home in Fes was a comfortable experience. It was a traditional Moroccan home with a beautiful terrace view and the location of the home was perfect. It was very close to the souks and other tourist sites and the home itself had several beds and a good kitchen. However, the home itself is very oddly organized and there are a lot of stairs between the bathroom, living, kitchen and the bedrooms. It may not be ideal for those with limited mobility or for children. Khalid, the manager at the home, offered cooked meals which I'm sure are delicious and traditional, however they are expensive and there are much cheaper alternatives in the medina. Overall the experience was great, but the biggest challenge was finding Luca and Khalid in the first place when we arrived in Fes. Finding airbnb homes in Morocco is more difficult than in other countries and this was definitely evident in Fes. We spent about an hour waiting for Luca in the designated spot but there appeared to be some miscommunication and it took us a lot of back and forth and borrowing phones and using an internet cafe to finally find him. My suggestion would be to double and triple check the agreed upon meeting point with Luca as finding your way to the home itself is impossible.
Yes reading Sarahs friends review I confirm that we ve been waiting at the usual meeting point and also we ve been looking for them everywhere, it was 5 of us searching invane ( me , khalid, his father in law, and two friends of mine): finally we understood why; they had a moroccan phone to call us in case they got lost but instead to use and ring us, they were going in and out from a cyber cafe sending us mails. In order to get to the cybercafe they obviously never been waiting for us at the meeting point in Rcif making very difficult for us to find them. Thats why I reccomend all my guests to wait at a prearranged place until we meet them, its the basics to meet someone lol. Regarding Khalid meals, they never tried: actually price is cheaper then medinas restaurants, portions are bigger and quality is extraordinary, plus Fouzia and Khalid can bring the food in the house at anytime guests require, they cook it in their house, they prepare the table and at the end they do the washing up etc. Full service, 5 stars home cathering for a fraction of the price of any 1/2 star restaurant in the old town. Then again in order to make critics you should always try first and not just guessing.
I was very surprised reading that the house is "oddly organized": this is a medina house, old traditional style with modern conforts( wifi, tv satellite, fast hot water). Thats how medina houses are, its not a flat, its an house on different floors. Thats why few years ago I loved this house and decided to renovate it.
We stayed one week in Luca's apartment and it was amazing!
The apartment is really spacious, and the terrace is just incredible. The house is quite cold, so if you are going during summer i'm sure you'll appreciate it, we stayed during winter time (end of January) and if you use the heaters you'll be absolutely fine. The kitchen has everything you can need, we love to cook, and we cooked every single day without problem. What we loved the most about the house is the authenticity, it feels like you are living there, not like being a tourist.
The communication with Luca is almost instantaneous, he is super helpful with everything, ask him anything and he'll help you. Also Khalid and her wife are the nicest people you'll ever meet, i went with her to hammam, and i highly recommend you do it it's one of the best experiences :)
Our stay in Luca's house in the medina of Fes could not have been better. His place has beautiful views from the terrace. The house is clean and has a lot of space. Despite its age the house has most modern amenities such as fast wifi, hot water, plenty of electricity outlets.
Communication with Luca is almost instant. He arranged for a pick-up from the airport. Once we arrived inside the medina, Khalid the caretaker of the house waited for us to take us to the house. We also had Khalid and his wife to cook us dinner two times and a breakfast. Very delicious!
We were here in January. Nice weather during the day. Chilling in the evening and night. But the heaters worked fine and there were plenty enough blankets to keep us warm and comfortabel in bed.
On top of it, we were fortunate enough that Luca was in Fes and took us to a very nice bar. Thanks for a great Fes experience!
Luca is a very good host, he gave us good suggestions for visiting the city and his friend Khalid was very helpful for organizing transfer from and to the airport, providing us very special breakfast and everything we needed during our stay in Fes. Luca's house is beautiful and cozy, the terrace is the place we most appreciated. The house is located in a quit area of the Medina and closest to a main square where it is possible to find any type of trasport for moving outside the city. A wonderful holiday!! Thanks Luca and thanks Khalid.
Things we loved: quiet part of the medina, owner and host were helpful and responsive, the beds were great, and the terrace has a fabulous view. But the house was challenging for us, a family with a young child. The many stairs (4 stories) are steep, narrow and uneven and they were impossible for our son and would be very challenging for older adults. The ceilings and door frames were very low in several rooms and both my husband and I banged our heads multiple times. If you are taller than 5'7" you need to bend down inside the bathroom and squat down to take a shower as that room has a very low ceiling. Luca warned us that the house would be cold in December but it was REALLY cold inside and the 3 small portable heaters helped only slightly. The kitchen had all the utensils and plates you could need but only a two burner hot plate and a small frying pan so it was challenging to cook dinner or breakfast for 3.
I think the house, for the right group (no kids, no older adults), would be great in spring or summer when it's warmer and guests can spend lots of time on the terrace. We loved wandering the streets and felt completely safe.
5'7" is 1.70mt: I am 1.78mt tall and never had problems in the bathroom. Ceiling in the bathroom is more then 2 meters high. There s clearly a mistake in the calculation given by the guest. Other rooms have higher ceilings.
most of houses have stairs, this is standard and normal for the medina and these are old houses. Fes is in the North and winters as most of the people know can be cold and rainy.Summers are (website hidden) the Medina there are not gas heaters, its only electrical heating. There is one for each room and hot water its 24 hours a day( instant electrical boiler). Hope this helps to understand better the idea of staying at a traditional house in Fes Medina.
