The house is perfectly located for visitors on Don Gaspar Avenue within walking distance to the Plaza and the Railyard and half a block from the State Capitol rotunda.
The home is a territorial adobe set in a historical house built when Santa Fe was a part of Mexico in the mid 1800's and retains many original features. My family has lived in this property since 1952.
The Space: The unit measures approximately 1200 sq. ft. and can comfortably accommodate 4 people. The house is made of adobe and it is important to note that REAL adobe is cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.
The unit comprises a large open plan living room, bedroom with a spacious en-suite bathroom with a full bath and a separate shower. The living room has a comfortable leather couch that converts to a queen size bed. For extra sleeping accommodation, twin Shikibuton beds or a king size bed can be set up in the middle room adjacent to the living room.
The kitchen has full amenities with a table for 4. There is another table for 4 in the living room by a large picture window, which can be used for dining as well as a work space.
The apartment is totally self-contained with a full bathroom and a full kitchen with access to three porches: one entrance/exit from the bedroom, one entrance/exit from the living room and another from the kitchen to the back porch. Parking is available for 2 or 3 cars near the front entrance on the property.
This unit is listed as a separate one for fewer people or can be combined with my other listing as an entire, whole house/whole first floor, for larger parties or more space. (Please see my other listings on my profile page for more details. I have now added a cozy studio on the same house property, which is the 4th listing, sleeping up to two people.) This charming historical 1200 sq.ft. adobe unit is NOT available when the entire 1st floor, 2400 sq.ft., is rented and visa versa. In other words this is a home with 2 units side by side separated by adjoining doors, which are opened when the whole first floor of the house is rented.
Interaction with Guests
The unit has a furnished back porch on our west side where people can enjoy food/drinks and hang out near the kitchen. One can also exit the unit from the front porch to watch the sunrise with a cup of coffee/tea in the morning in front of the cozy studio on our east side. There is a courtyard on our south side where one can socialize, relax under the shade of the trees, and/or lay in the sun with food/drinks as well.
As a native Santa Fean, I can provide any information on dining, shopping, local attractions, events and local history you may need. I can provide guided historical tours of downtown Santa Fe as well. Just ask me a.s.a.p, so I can plan for it ahead of time. I love to interact with my guests and would be happy to give you a tour around town.
Shopping, food are all within walking distance. The Railrunner and bus systems are nearby, but actually you don't need a car in this area. Don Gaspar Ave. is located in one of the best and most beautiful neighborhoods in old Santa Fe. It is also one of the safest places to live. Bandelier once resided in this house until he built a bigger one on Canyon Road. In the sixties, only families occupied the homes on this street, which was near schools, shopping, etc. Now the block is in a commercial district, which means it is near where the action is on weekdays and quiet on the weekends.
Other Things to Note
For light sleepers, noisy road traffic on Don Gaspar Ave. can be expected at times since we are located downtown center. We are located on a one-way street going south away from the Capitol, so early traffic takes another route, but some 5:00 pm after work traffic takes Don Gaspar. We have forced air heating, which a very light sleeper may hear the air blowing out. To be noted as well, if you have severe back problems, the bathroom sink is kind of low, as this is a historic house. There is a stool now by the sink counter for seating.
Our gentle Collie in the backyard has sadly passed away, so there is now furniture on the back porch next to the kitchen for people to, for example, enjoy eating outside. Just finished a courtyard with outside furniture on the south side as well.
We live in the separate apartment upstairs, so we will be close by, if you should need anything. Thank you, Virginia
PLEASE, NO SMOKING inside the apartment. Some people are allergic to the smoke smell that lingers after. Since there is absolutely NO SMOKING allowed only inside the house, please be aware of the dry climate in Santa Fe should you choose to smoke outside.
Since this unit is side-by-side to the other units, quiet time after 10:00 pm is necessary. Also, when you go out in the evening, please leave only one or two lights burning. To note as well, before you go to bed, please turn off the porch lights & spotlight for the night, as the light might disturb other guests' sleep in the next unit.
