About This Listing
A 2 bedroom cottage located 15 minutes from Paia..10 minutes from Haiku on the Hana highway. The cottage has all amenities; full kitchen, satellite TV; wi/fi; hot tub. Spectacular ocean views; complete privacy. You can listen to whales...
After a couple suggestions, we have remodeled the bathroom to make the shower more inviting…we took out the tub and made it a nice walk in shower…..But most guest love the outside shower the best
We had a spectacular stay at Cliff's Edge. The views from the Seaside Cottage are nothing short of breathtaking, and it was always a great feeling to arrive back at the cottage at the end of a long day of exploring. An incredibly peaceful, private, relaxing rental.
We loved the cottage's remote location, it was precisely what we were looking for, but if you're looking for a property on the beach or a boardwalk, this probably isn't for you. From the airport, it's about a 45-min drive, and Paia is about 25-min away (groceries and restaurants), and you can get just about anywhere on the island in an hour to an hour-and-a-half (which seems like a long time, but it's Maui--even driving around is a memorable experience).
The cottage is sheltered by tropical plants on either side to provide complete privacy from the surrounding houses, you'll really never even know they're there, unless you head over for a swim in the pool or a massage from the masseuse who lives in one of Jon's properties.
We had no issues with the cottage while we were there. The bed was comfortable, the house stayed cool at night, and the kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans. You will see an occasional tiny lizard scurrying away from you in the house, but you are in the jungle, so that's to be expected. It can get buggy out at night, so make sure you keep the screen door closed. Jon met us on the first day to show us the ropes, and was always reachable via text if we had any questions.
While you certainly don't need a Wrangler to get around the island, or to get to the property, my wife and I found our standard-size car rental to be a bit unwieldy (too wide and too low) on the Road to Hana and on the road to the property, which is paved about half the way, and then packed gravel the rest of the way. We thought either a smaller car, which could wind around the Road to Hana's often-one-lane road without feeling like you're going to fall off, or a mid-size SUV to keep you up off the ground would be best for Maui.
Jon has beach chairs and umbrellas in the cottage for when you head to the west side of the island. There are pool towels, but you may want to pick up some oversized beach towels when you stop for groceries before arriving.
I really can't overstate what an amazing trip this was, and it all centered around having this cliffside cottage with spectacular views to come home to every night.
Such a magical and perfect place for our Maui vacation. Honestly, could not have asked for a more ideal location. Located right by the cutest town Paia, and right at the beginning of the Hana Highway, we were able to do it ALL. This is the perfect place if you are looking for a more authentic Maui vacation away from the super touristy areas. The house was amazing, we could have moved in and stayed forever! Many great nights in the hot tub listening to the waves crash below and enjoying the beautiful stars. We will definitely be back.
Jon's place is simply stunning. The view is incredible, and the location is off the Maui beaten path in a great way. This is not a typical tourist experience, and gives a unique perspective into life on a subtropical island. Highly recommended.
Once we arrived on the property, the owner was there to greet us and show us around. Life is all about experiences and this Seaside Cottage was a great experience. We enjoyed the seclusion and the entire purpose was to celebrate our anniversary. Jon told us some places to go. It is roughly 20 minutes from the main area of Paia, but wasn't a problem. You are already on the "Road to Hana". We were able to go around the island fairly well. The main things to remember are to enjoy the beauty of Maui, the serenity of the island/cottage and love and reconnect with the person you love, before going back to the hectic city life. If you are looking for razzle dazzle, then this is not the place for you.
While a few minutes off the Hana Highway on a bumpy, gravel road, we found it a convenient location - 1:30 to Lahaina (which we had to drive to one day) and 1:30 to Hana (which we were happy to visit again after honeymooning there). The views, the sound of the water breaking on the rocks below, the hot tub, and the outdoor shower were amazing! We went in the end of December and I was very cold in the house. Not all of the windows closed entirely and a couple window panes were missing from a slat window. So if you stay here in winter, definitely bring a jacket and pants. Also, before you go grocery shopping: don't expect to find any condiments in the fridge - it was left unplugged (probably to save electricity between visits). And the few spices that were in the cupboard were suspect (probably from the weather). Afterwards, I realized that I could've asked the host if we could borrow some items so maybe try that. Overall, a neat place to stay.
