Complete scam artist! The reviews are fake and most likely her friends or paid reviewers.
When we arrived the place looked all run down unlike the pictures and the beds had nothing but a futon pillow on them! The place reeked of pet urine smells and tons of dog and cat fur all over the place including on the bed blankets. There was also a strong Propane smell in the house.
After bringing this to her attention, she got upset and explained not to worry about the gas leak from the kitchen stove and got all defensive about the pet urine smells and fur since she stated that pets normally sleep in the same beds! But when we mentioned that we will leave far a late dinner and come back later in the evening she really blew her lid and told us to leave and not bother coming back since she does not allow in-and-out traffic after 9:00PM since it will disturb her and her pets sleep! I told her we'll gladly go to a hotel but she refused to offer any refund despite us not staying there for more than 5 minutes while talking with her about the issues during our walk through.
AirBnB is not reachable and this woman is scamming people since she has a strict cancellation policy. She kicked us out after the walk through due to her house rules and now I can't get a refund for ANY of the 3 nights I paid for! I called my credit card issuer to run a charge-back since we never even stayed a single night there.
AirBnB needs to fix their dispute system and have some sort of working phone number where one can actually reach and talk to someone in the event such issues arise since the existing phone number for AirBNB is no longer in service! Talk about getting the run around!
My wife and I were guests at Hale O’Kakuis for five days in February and it was an unforgettable vacation. Just 15 minutes from the Hilo airport, its location is ideal for visiting the island, however it is necessary to rent a car. Linda rents the ground floor of the house. She lives upstairs. The house is exactly as shown in the photos, its style is original and is situated in the jungle. The tour of the property, which Linda conducts for a fee, was extremely interesting and well worth it, both for its exceptional variety of flowers, plants and fruit trees and for her expertise and enthusiasm. We truly enjoyed the tray of fresh-picked exotic fruits which Linda presented each morning. Among the excellent suggestions she gave us on what to do, one was a particularly pleasant surprise: Paolo’s Bistro, a friend’s restaurant in Pahoa. Paolo, an excellent chef, is not only Italian, like me, but from my hometown, Livorno. So, we had dinner there twice. We had a great Cacciucco and we became fast friends. We also became friends with Linda and spent an evening together at “Uncle Robert’s” which is a fair occurring every Wednesday night in a very special place. Uncle Robert’s property was the last land to be spared by a lava flow. There were hundreds of people, food and drink, music and dancing in a grand celebration of life under the star-studded Hawaiian skies. We have wonderful memories of Linda, her home and her hospitality.
Linda is a great host! The room was peaceful and quiet, the mattress firm and comfy, and the whole hale was beautifully decorated with anthurium floral arrangements. In the morning she gave us a tour of her impressive gardens. A real gem she is to the Big Island!
Sorry to comment so late. Linda is a very energetic and helpful host who has a very delicate and beautiful house inside the jungle. Memorable experience. Thanks!
Hale O'Kakuis is a nice place owned by a wonderful lady Linda. Our stay was made extra special when she gave us a tour of her estate - to show her fruit trees, anteriums and other plants. Her dogs (especially Baby Jasmin) are fun to play with. If you love must animals and the rainforest feel, this place is definitely for you! Thank you, Linda, for your hospitality! :-)
Roomy, rustic place in the middle of nowhere & the middle of everything. Lots of privacy. May be difficult to find the first time if after dark, so arrive when the sun is still up. As stated up front, host charges an extra 13% room tax, so consider when budgeting. Wish we could have stayed just a bit longer.
We only stayed night at Linda's. Beautiful home out on the jungly side of the island. Very gracious, accommodating host. After three plus decades in Hawaii, we enjoyed her perspective on island life. She has two Jack Russell's; small, friendly dogs that did not once, and live upstairs with her. Large downstairs all to ourselves.
Wonderful hosts! We had the whole place to ourselves. It was clean, spacious, and full of Aloha. We enjoyed chatting with Linda and Jerry so much that we ended up spending some time with them on their property and got a full tour of all the wonderful edible plants she has growing. We had our kids with us and they loved sleeping on the king size beds and enjoyed eating on a little kids table in the kitchen.
It was just a very pleasant experience overall. Would love to stay there again if they don't sell the property first! It should go fast because it is amazing.
Linda is a lovely and respectful person. Sure, I recommend her place. Thanks Linda:)
Linda has a lovely place, with a lot of personality and a spacious kitchen. We really enjoyed staying with her, although we were only there the night. She's got a couple sweet, excited Jack Russells, who are adorable, but you might here them at night as they exit the house through the main door near the guest room. Other than that, we were very pleased.
One note: Linda collects at $11 hotel excise fee at the end of the visit. I'm not entirely sure what this is as I didn't pay it at any of the other Airbnbs I stayed at during the trip, but factor that in to your costs since Airbnb doesn't collect it directly.
