Interaction with Guests
Housekeepers live down the hill from the main house, and will do the daily cleaning when you're away or a schedule that's convenient for you.
Montezuma is unique among beach destinations in Guanacaste and Nicoya. For years, this remote village and its surrounding beaches, forests and waterfalls have enjoyed near-legendary status among backpackers, UFO seekers, hippie expatriates, and European budget travelers. Although it maintains its alternative vibe, Montezuma has emerged as a great destination for all manner of travelers looking for a beach retreat surrounded by some stunning scenery. An Italian influence can be felt in the outstanding restaurants in the area. Active pursuits abound, from hiking in the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve to horseback riding to a beach-side waterfall. The house itself is also walking distance to a Canopy (zip-line) Tour and a Butterfly Farm. As ever, it's the natural beauty, miles of almost abandoned beaches, rich wildlife, and jungle waterfalls that first made Montezuma famous, and they continue to make this one of the favorite beach towns in Costa Rica.
Chez Mu is 1 mile from downtown Montezuma and 12 miles from Mal País. Aside from the beaches next to town in Montezuma, the other nearest beach to the house is beautiful Playa Manchas about 1.5 miles heading southwest towards Cabuya. It’s possible to walk to the beaches, but the hike back is up a steep hill. We highly recommend renting a 4x4 to fully explore the nature parks, beaches and restaurants in the area.
We don't ask for a security deposit, but you are responsible for any major damages or loss.
From Dec 25, 2015 - Jan 03, 2016 the minimum stay is 7 nights.
The photos tell the truth -- this house is as charming and remote as it looks. Carlos and Alejandra were so welcoming and friendly, despite the fact that we had zero common language. The road up to the house is STEEP and must be approached with great respect! :-) The deck and pool are why to stay here. Constant sunlight during daytime hours, and then amazing starlight. Pretty much we spent all of hour waking hours on the deck or in the (website hidden) in the bedrooms did its job.
Chez mu was absolutely wonderful. We had a hard time leaving the house (because it was so relaxing & peaceful), but when we did, it was very conveniently located. We rented a moto & had no problem climbing the driveway. And the view is so worth the climb. Se vale la pena! Gracias Eric & friends, we'll most certainly be back, hopefully for a longer stay!
Eric provided great directions to get to the house and lots of information about the area. I recommend arriving before dark as it's a bit off the beaten path. We were greeted by the caretaker, Carlos, who showed us all the features of the home. The house was as depicted in the listing; very secluded, quiet and clean. Carlos' wife, Yahaira, came by daily with fresh towels and to do some light cleaning. Both Carlos and Yahaira were very gracious and helpful.
We loved the open air living offered by Chez Mu and the strong connection with nature. Parrots chattered in the trees and we could hear the howler monkeys every morning. The howlers finally came close enough to watch on our last morning at the house! Also watched amazing lightening storms out over the ocean at night.
We found the house location to be a great jumping off point for exploration of the area. We spent time in Montezuma, and at the beach, went snorkeling and diving in the Tortuga Islands, and zip lining just down the road at SunTrails. Had a delicious and magical dinner at Ylang Ylang; highly recommended! The pool was a great place to cool off and relax at the end of the day; what a view! We all left wishing that we had more time to spend in the area and to enjoy the tranquility of Chez Mu. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!
On recommande !
(email hidden) was fabulous -- with a few caveats:
This is adventure travel. The house is relatively far from the nearest main airport San Jose. If you decide to take a regional plane to Tambor, be prepared with anxiety medication. The planes are small and bounce around A LOT -- so much so that we opted not to fly back to San Jose even though we pre-paid for our tickets. We took the ferry instead.
The town of Montezuma is cute and quaint and a littly hippy'ish. The road up to the house is treacherous. It's a VERY steep incline that is part dirt, part paved. You absolutely must have a 4x4 as the roads are not maintained. Again be prepared with anxiety medication.
Once we arrived, the house was fabulous as was the pool where we stayed submerged most of the trip -- though there were a few issues we had with the house. One was that no one spoke english -- not even a word. Thankfully, I know decent spanish, but if you don't, you're screwed.
Carlos, the proprietor is great and is only a yell down the road if you need him. Literally just yell, "CARLOS" and he's there within a minute.
The other issue we had with the house was that we could not flush toilet paper down the toilet -- this was a major deal for two of the people in our group. It would have been nice to have been warned of this rule prior to arrival.
One really special part of our trip was having the female caretaker (I couldn't understand her name) prepare a typical Costa Rican dinner for us -- it was delicious -- a highlight of the trip. She made chicken w/ rice, frijoles, salad, and a vegetarian lasagna that was to die for.
Eric is great in that he provides a very thorough guidebook -- unfortunately many of the contact numbers in the book no longer work. The manual needs a major update. Thankfully we were able to find a cab number that worked -- Francisco (phone number hidden) who charged 4 colones one way to get from the house to Montezuma. Cab for us was the preferred method of travel after dark -- although once you are familiar with the rough road, you could probably drive it just fine at night yourself.
The butterfly sanctuary and the zip line tour are literally footsteps away -- and great easy excursions. We would have had lunch at the butterfly sanctuary but that cantina was closed the day we went.
All in all we had a great time at the house. There wasn't much for us to do in the city but have dinner and get groceries. We really enjoyed the "Cocolores" restaurant. I tried cooking meat from the Super Montezuma and it was not good. There is a carniceria in Cobano that is supposedly better so buy your meat before you drive in! There was a gas grill for grilling.
Eric could not have been a better host. His guide to the house, area and travel was outstanding and gave incredibly helpful information that we used in planning our trip. He could be a professional travel guide writer! He was in regular email regarding many aspects of our trip inc suggesyins for our itinerary. We were welcomed by his charming caretaker and given a bottle of bubbly. The house far exceeded even our expectations. The setting, layout, decor are truly exceptional. My son thought he was in paradise. The house is so brilliantly stocked with eg smoothie makers, great tv, stereo , great kitchen. It felt like staying in your own boutique 5 star hotel. We lived in the pool and ate all our meals on the deck watching a myriad of birds. I felt we were suspended in the canopy. It is heavenly and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to stay in such a wonderful home. We want to try and go back every year and would stay (email hidden) if we can.
The listing is very accurate, Eric is very organized and we appreciated all the effort he made and the time he spent trying to give us all the possible informations to make the best possible stay for our family.
The house is simply beautiful: we love the outdoor the most, the beautiful deck in different levels, the view and the sounds from the rich nature around will not be forgotten.
There so many nice touches around the house (great stereo system by the way!!) and the house itself blend so well with the environment!
We had a hard time leaving during the day to do our planned excursions.
We have been lucky to be able to see different species of birds, insects and families of monkeys from the house. What a treat for our New Yorker kids..
The service is also great, the staff is kind and very helpful. Everything is also very clean.
We also enjoyed the city of Montezuma itself, we were not expecting to be so nice, with small restaurants/bar on the beach.
We enjoyed barbecuing the fresh fish we bought nearby.
At walking distance a nice bar and a fun zip lining location.
We rented a car but we used it basically to go for groceries and on a couple of adventures.. reason being we didn't want to miss the day in the pool while looking at the jungle.
Thank you Eric, next time we need at least two weeks though..
