The Space

Chez Mu is nestled on a hilltop above Montezuma. The Villa offers tropical luxury at its finest. Custom built to the highest standards, with a spectacular pool and modern furnishings. The Villa can accommodate a large family or several couples.

The home is in the middle of a lush 3+ acre property, which ensures absolute privacy and tranquility. White faced and howler monkeys, as well as parrots. hummingbirds and many other varieties of birds can be seen daily. The hilltop setting provides panoramic views of the jungle and ocean, as well as a steady and refreshing breeze (and no mosquitoes!).

Plenty of deck space near the pool could become the backdrop for a very special wedding party and is perfect for yoga.

It is only 5 minutes from downtown Montezuma (cozy town with amazing beaches), 15 minutes from Cobano (bank, doctor, supermarket) and 25 minutes from Malpais (incredible sunsets and surfing).

Chez Mu is the perfect honeymoon retreat, or pampering base camp for your family's tropical adventure!

Guest Access

The entire villa and 3+ acre gardens are yours alone.

Interaction with Guests

Housekeepers live down the hill from the main house, and will do the daily cleaning when you're away or a schedule that's convenient for you.

The Neighborhood

Montezuma is unique among beach destinations in Guanacaste and Nicoya. For years, this remote village and its surrounding beaches, forests and waterfalls have enjoyed near-legendary status among backpackers, UFO seekers, hippie expatriates, and European budget travelers. Although it maintains its alternative vibe, Montezuma has emerged as a great destination for all manner of travelers looking for a beach retreat surrounded by some stunning scenery. An Italian influence can be felt in the outstanding restaurants in the area. Active pursuits abound, from hiking in the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve to horseback riding to a beach-side waterfall. The house itself is also walking distance to a Canopy (zip-line) Tour and a Butterfly Farm. As ever, it's the natural beauty, miles of almost abandoned beaches, rich wildlife, and jungle waterfalls that first made Montezuma famous, and they continue to make this one of the favorite beach towns in Costa Rica.

Getting around

Highly recommend renting a 4x4 to fully explore the area.

  • Hi Eric . I was in Costa Rica for 2 weeks , I do not know how a south African managed to find Montezuma as the place that I would take fellow Costa Ricans that have never been that far in to that area . What a spot of luck , today our hearts lay in Chez Mu , the home the view the peace . We cooked on the beautiful terrace , swam all night and woke up early to the sounds of the jungle .
The village is like a hidden gem on the cost line , filled with kind happy free minded people . German , Italian , Costa Rican . We had it all because we where in Montezuma , if we had been anywhere else in the surrounding area , I would say " not much " focus on Montezuma and branch out to see the beautiful sites . Many thanks Carlos and family who befriended us at the home with mazing service . Thank you Eric for your home . Our hearts are in Chez Mu of Montezuma .

  • When we were given the luxury of a four month sabbatical in Central America, my wife and I wanted to find the perfect place to relax for a month at the end of our trip. Having scoured all the Airbnb properties between Mexico and Panama we thought Chez Mu looked like the best - and we weren’t disappointed. The house and grounds are beautiful. The living room / kitchen opens onto the terrace and deck which makes it feel like you are permanently outside. And yet it still feels very private and secluded. We spent many of our days sunbathing on the deck and cooling down in the infinity pool - you feel as though you are are in the middle of nature (but with a fridge 15 feet away). We cooked on the barbecue most nights which was perfect. There’s a pretty good supermarket in town (Super Montezuma) which has meat (steak / chicken / pork) and fish (the sea bass was excellent and very reasonably priced) as well as fresh vegetables and herbs. The bohemian clientele ensure that there are lots of health foods there as well. There’s a bigger supermarket in Cobano a few miles up the road (but we only went there twice in the month) and the Saturday market in Montezuma has lots of great fresh organic produce. We only ate out a few times and can thoroughly recommend the Tierra y Fuego further up the hill from Chez Mu and Ylang Ylang just off the beach. Both restaurants were superb. We went to a few beaches up and down the coast but once we found Playa Las Manchas we stopped looking as it was so lovely. We walked down in the morning with a picnic (Chez Mu provides coolers of three different sizes which is very handy), grabbed a spot under a tree and relaxed, swam and snorkelled all day. On weekdays the beach was pretty deserted until about 4pm when the locals and ex-pats come to cool down after work. Carlos and his wife Yaira made sure that the house, pool and grounds were always spotless but we never felt like they were intruding or getting in the way. We decided not to rent a car and managed perfectly well walking into town and to the beaches. You will need to get a taxi back, though, as it’s very steep. It costs between six and eight dollars one way. The taxi to Cobano is about 10 dollars. A rental car would be useful, however, especially if you want to explore the region some more. Eric was a great host and was very helpful in every way. There is a superb house manual that has everything you will need to have a great stay. The word ‘paradise’ is bandied around far too much in resorts and hotels these days. Chez Mu may not be paradise - but it’s the closest we have come across so far. And we have done quite a bit of...

  • A truly outstanding property, absolute paradise for relaxing in total privacy or using as a base for exploring the Nicoya peninsula.

  • Chez Mu is an incredible place overlooking Montezuma. The place has premium features and is well set up for enjoying the natural surroundings either in the pool, on loungers, in a hammock or at two different tables. Honestly, it's hard to leave during the day to adventure when you have everything you need. The home is immersed in nature so you can wake up to Howler monkeys, parrots or a variety of birds (we experienced all three during our 4 days). It's about a 7 minute (some what steep) drive to Montezuma. Eric's recommendations on restaurants, tour companies and maps were spot on that he provides in a 55 page guide. Our only suggestion is to pick up groceries at the Super Max before you drive into Montezuma as it has a much wider selection including fresh meat to BBQ. Pura Vida!

  • A truly beautiful home in an incredible setting, so much so, you just don't want to leave. Ever.

It has everything you need, be it for a small group, family or just a couple. Eric is on hand via email & is very helpful should you require anything during your stay.

If we lived a little closer to Costa Rica, we would all return in a heartbeat.

If you want a home away from home but most likely even better than your own, then stay here.

  • Simply put, Chez Mu is fantastic. It was the perfect hilltop villa from which to base our relaxation and exploration of the southern Nicoya peninsula. Beautiful, modern, comfortable, well-maintained. We spent many hours lounging, reading, eating, sunbathing, and swimming on the main pool area deck. Many birds and jungle animals visible from the house and in the surrounding gardens. Amazing to wake enjoy some morning coffee in the open air with the sounds of howler monkeys as a backdrop. My only regret is that it didn't last much much longer.
