Our adorable BASEMENT studio apartment is WITHIN 50 FEET of Cary Street and right in cool Carytown. It has a SEPARATE entrance, a FULL kitchen, and a FULL bathroom.
Many thanks to those travelers who take the time to read the listing details and who, along with other gracious guests and hosts, make the Airbnb experience AWESOME, AFFORDABLE and FUN: THANK YOU!! We have made some of THE BEST connections with our AMAZING Airbnb guests. Through the Airbnb experience we now have lifelong friends from all over the US and around the world. We look forward to connecting with you too!
When you send us a reservation request or you message us with an inquiry about the space, we will require you to CONFIRM that you have READ THE LISTING DETAILS. Because Airbnb is becoming an increasingly popular platform for travel, some first-timers are skipping reading the information in the listing (you know, the part where one is supposed to pay attention to the details).
We update our calendar daily. Even though Airbnb suggests checking with us first, if the dates are open, feel free to make a reservation if you know you want to stay with us. Because we plan our time and tasks around your arrival and departure, please kindly let us know rough times you expect to 1) arrive, and 2) depart (remember to include both of these). MANY thanks!
This BASEMENT studio APARTMENT is WITHIN 50 FEET of Carytown. It has a SEPARATE entrance, a FULL kitchen, and a FULL bathroom. You will hear us upstairs (we researched sound isolation options and have begun implementing the solution). If you are a light sleeper or require absolute silence, this listing is not a good fit for you. If, however, you like to know your hosts are nearby, appreciate our listing & location, and are swayed by our reviews, we'll be right upstairs to help you with any questions, concerns, or if you've forgotten something (we usually have spares of everything)!
The apartment leans towards the bohemian and is incredibly welcoming, cozy, & accommodating. It has some small windows that let in natural light which we have supplemented with recessed lighting (we replaced pretty close to all of the stark overhead florescent fixtures). If you prefer low lighting, we have lots of area lamps and whimsical lights scattered throughout the apartment.

Sound travels between the floors. I started with one solution (which I installed in the bathroom) before I realized I had to find a different solution for the rest of the apartment because of restricting access to the pipes and wiring in the apartment's ceiling. We have begun installing sound isolation materials, but in the meantime I want to make you aware sound does travel between the floors.
You have access to the apartment with a full kitchen, full bath, washer and dryer, separate sleeping area, and the living area with a kitchen table and a sitting area. The apartment's separate entrance is around the back of the house. (You can go out the back gate, if you like, to access Cary Street a lot quicker than walking to the front of the house.)
Interaction with Guests
The amount of interaction is up to you. We live upstairs and Fiona works from home; we are almost always here and enjoy hanging at home. If you find you need to contact us or interact with us in any way, feel free to call, text, or to message us using the Airbnb system. You are also welcomed to knock on our door (front or back). Our cell phone numbers are included in the contact details and on the welcome sheet in the apartment. We're happy to help in whatever way we can!
We LOVE Carytown with its eclectic mix of locally owned shops, restaurants, movie theater, coffee shops, book stores, and street entertainers. Within walking distance or minutes by car or bus you'll find museums, parks, the James River and its hiking/biking trail system, historic sites, Hollywood Cemetery, VCU, The Fan, Richmond Convention Center, downtown Richmond, MCV, Brown's Island, Belle Isle, the Manchester district, Church Hill ... too many to mention. We are smack dab in the heart of the city!
Free, unrestricted on-street parking is right out front. We are usually able to find a space ON our block or, on during the very busiest evenings/weekends, within one block. Plenty of parking out front available during the week.
Two bus routes are within 1-2 blocks, and several others within 10 blocks. Check out their routes at rideGRTC (add the usual dot+ suffix). Additionally, the area where we live is mostly flat, so RVA is a great city to see the sights by bicycle (downtown is a bit more hilly).
We are about equidistant between the two Amtrak stations although the Main Street station option is on a bus route that will bring you to our neighborhood. Greyhound is 30 minutes on foot. Megabus is 60 minutes on foot, 10 mins + $10 by cab, or 30 min + $1.50 by bus.
Other Things to Note
We have a small, friendly 11 lb toy poodle that lives with us upstairs. You usually don't hear him unless someone approaches the house--he makes for a GREAT alarm system!
PROCEEDS: Part of our proceeds provide much needed funds for 2 sets of sisters (4 elementary school girls) who live in Managua (capital of Nicaragua) at the city's main dump. Our monthly contributions enable the girls to go to school and pay for their entire year's schooling, including supplies, uniforms, and shoes for school. We also use part of our Airbnb proceeds to make monthly contributions to HopeForPaws org in LA that rescues, treats, and places street dogs living in some of the most horrible conditions I have seen (like our sponsored girls above). THANK YOU!!

PLEASE NOTE: Should you decide to book with us, about 24 hours after you check out Airbnb will send you an email asking you to review your stay with us. Airbnb will then notify us that you have reviewed us. Their email letting us know you have written your review is extremely helpful because we're über busy and totally depend on this prompt to also leave a review for you!

The apartment is set up for 2 people to sleep on the queen bed. If you require separate sleeping arrangements for guest #2, we provide additional sheets, blankets, pillow, and a twin airbed with memory foam topper and thick mattress pad for an additional $20.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THE FOLLOWING:
THE GOLDEN RULE: Treat others as you would have them treat you--with respect and consideration.
I have attempted to keep our towels and washcloths free of stains and discolorations and have done my very best to make prior guests aware to PLEASE, use the towels to ONLY DRY WASHED AND CLEAN hands or other items on them, and to NOT WIPE OFF creams, lotions, potions, benzoyl peroxide products (often found in acne treatments), food, or dirt onto the towels (including the kitchen towels) without FIRST RINSING OR WASHING YOUR HANDS/FACE. Should you encounter a stained or discolored towel, please be assured it is clean, but that someone before you has used it to clean off makeup, dirt, food, sauce, or other staining substances including acne medicines or creams that contain BENZOYL PEROXIDE and which leave bleached out, blotchy spots on our colored towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, or wash cloths.

We have had the pleasure of hosting fabulous guests who are incredibly thoughtful and considerate, so people's comings and goings have been no worries at all. We merely ask you to be aware of noise levels during quiet time 11 pm-7 am--thanks!

I ASSURE you that your THOUGHTFULNESS IS noticed, AND very much APPRECIATED! Thank you to our AWESOME guests who have washed their dishes and generally cleaned up after themselves. MANY THANKS! Not only does this kind of thoughtfulness and consideration help us avoid imposing a cleaning charge, but I REALLY DO notice your thoughtfulness and consideration, and especially that you are aware of your impact on others. MANY, MANY THANKS AND MY APPRECIATION of your awesome self-who-considers-others :-)
Fiona was readily available and helpful during our stay. The basement apt was cozy, and very well stocked with anything that we needed. The location was unbeatable, for showing someone who had never been to RVA around. The wine was a much loved added touch. Would defiantly stay again. Thanks for the great stay.
Great location and a wonderful place!! The host had everything one could ask for. Would recommend this place for anyone travelling in the Richmond, VA area.
We really enjoyed our stay at Fiona's adorable apartment! The location was perfect for exploring Carytown. We were right in the heart of everything and the convenience of being able to walk everywhere was hard to beat! Fiona's was a great host and very accommodating. This listing was exactly as it was described and had everything we needed for our short getaway. We definitely will stay here again if it fits into our travel plans!
Lovely cozy basement apartment with every amenity and a great shower, heated floor. Hostess was very welcoming, very central location, easy to find parking ...
We had a delightful time in Richmond in Fiona's basement apartment. The bed is quite comfortable, the bathroom has been thoroughly updated (complete with heated floors, and the kitchen is spacious and has everything you would need and more - like a Keurig coffee maker. The locations is great as it is just around the corner from Cary street and there is plenty of street parking of needed. I would definitely stay there again.
This place was cozy and clean, very true to the description. The location was perfect and the hosts extremely friendly and informative. Would definitely stay here again!
She answered all my questions, sent at different times, within an hour. I got to the apartment later than expected and she left lights on and a phone charger available when I mentioned I left mine behind. The apartment was extremely clean and decorated charmingly. Bathroom was an inspiration to copy in an update at my own home. The bed was VERY comfortable. The kitchen was completely stocked and had Chobani yogurt, granola, toast-butter-jams, coffee, tea, cream, milk and OJ for breakfast self-serve. With its own entrance, the apartment is completely private.
Thanks Joan! We are SO delighted you enjoyed your stay in our apartment and that you took advantage of the location, the space itself, and the little extras we've thought of to make our guests' stays all that much more welcoming and accommodating! We're looking forward to hosting you on your upcoming visits!

ABOUT FIONA: She first traveled using Airbnb and loved it! When Fiona returned to the States, she was instrumental in getting the family on board to host on Airbnb.
She's educated, well traveled, respectful and fun, and a transplant from Australia. Fiona has diverse tastes in music, food, and friends. She loves different cultures and connecting with people from all walks of life. She's just as happy dancing on a dirt floor in Mexico as she is dancing on a ballroom floor in Washington, DC (hmm ... maybe that's because she loves dancing! Fiona's credo: Who needs the gym when you can DANCE!)
Fiona grew up by the shores of the Pacific Ocean and in the the middle of the Sonoran Desert. She's lived in cities with populations in the millions and a one-horse town with a population of ... oh, around ... fewer than one hundred (yikes!). Fiona is open to adventures and new experiences. She is easy to get along with, and fun to travel with. Fiona is open to most lifestyles and understands there's not one exclusive formula for success--there are an infinite number of ways in which to successfully navigate relationships, the world, and life's ups and downs.
Fiona likes to keep a balance: She's quite happy taking time to be with herself as well as spending time engaging with others. Her native language is English, but Fiona is fluent in Spanish. She's studied smatterings of other languages and also speaks conversational Persian (Farsi) and elementary Arabic (current language of study). Besides managing an online editing business, Fiona is multi-talented and knows how to sew, knit, crochet, paint (fine arts & walls), read music and play basics on a smattering of instruments, write, install a computer network, fix a computer, repair, dig up and replace plumbing, lay tile, replace a wax ring and the innards of a toilet, do other types of handyperson work around the house, change the oil and fuses in a car, diagnose (some) car problems, panel beat and spray paint a car, etc. Fiona has been described as a renaissance woman.
ABOUT THE FAMILY: Keith is a born-and-raised Richmonder, so if there's anything you need to know about Richmond or the surrounding area, just ask! He's a hospitable host and enjoys our Airbnb guests! The children: one is grown and is working on her medical degree at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The other is a straight-A student in high school and very much enjoys meeting and engaging with the diverse mix of people we have the good fortune to host through Airbnb.
FOR OUR AIRBNB GUESTS: Fiona & Family don't discriminate based on anything--not race, not religion, not language, not culture, not sex, not sexual orientation, not education, not socioeconomic status, not how much $ is in your bank account (as CPAs, both Fiona & Keith know appearances are NOT necessarily reality), nor your political leanings. We have friends from Central America who don't have more than a 6th grade education, and we have friends with multiple PhDs. We are equally comfortable conversing and engaging with both sets of friends--and everyone in between. Whatever your background, we look for the things we have in common through which we will connect and engage with you.
PROVISO: Regardless of the genitalia, Fiona & Family have two deal breakers: 1) bullies--in every sense of the word--including those who intimidate, ostracize, belittle, or emotionally and/or physically bully others, and 2) people who are not respectful of others and/or the belongings of others, which is very closely related to bullying anyway: they're both disregarding the sovereignty of someone else and/or their belongings. We practice what we preach, so you can be assured that at all times we will be respectful of you, your space, your privacy, your wishes, and your possessions.
We look forward to meeting you and, if the timing's right, to having whatever interesting conversation(s) you may have time to fit in to your stay with us!
MOTTO 1: Remember to act spontaneously from time to time--it maintains the balance between order and chaos.
MOTTO 2: Take calculated risks (versus dumb ones)--it keeps the adrenaline in your system, and the fun in your life!
MOTTO 3: Educate yourself--it enlivens your brain: Our classroom is all around us, all the time--and it's FREE!
MAY YOU FOREVER BE THE BENEVOLENT RULER OF YOUR DOMAIN THAT IS YOUR LIFE!
WISHING YOU SAFE TRAVELS AND AMAZING ADVENTURES!
