You can also walk to the ferry which is two and 1/2 blocks away. Esperanza is on the other side of the island which has the Malecon, and the bioluminescent bay tours. Vieques is an island off another island. It is wild and remote and unimaginably beautiful. Dinoflagellates glow and ours is the brightest biobay on Earth. We are an island Off another island that is hard to reach but worth it. There’s a black sand beach too. Playa Negra. You will need to be an intrepid traveler to truly enjoy the treck up Mount Pirata. It’s 934 feet high and takes a good bit of a day to get up to the top. At the summit, you’ll see the entire island and much of our archipelago. We are closest to St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. Vieques island is a place that is wild and untamed and highly interesting. The Navy used Vieques as a bombing test ground for years. Only now is the clean up finished enough for people to start re-populating. The majority of the land is under FWS and is a refuge for sea turtles and coral and animals and birds.
There is no stop light and you won’t find a corporate fast food place —except one subway overlooking the Caribbean. Needless to say it’s a quite amazing way to eat a sandwich! The sunsets are finer than any on many excursions and global travels. You don’t need a filter for photos.
Why am I an expert?
I went down after seeing the place on a show that said “you too can buy a cheap piece of the Caribbean” - well with me needing a vacation as a busy filmmaker and also knowing that no matter where I go I am going to be filming, I found paradise.
Truly.
I got so hooked in I bought a house. It’s absolutely gorgeous yet terrifying. There’s an absolute fear that needs to stay with you when you go to a place such as this. One that contains much political unrest and racism and drug piracy. Yes this is no five star location this is as real as it gets. You can still go hunt through Navy bunkers, there are still files and business machines spread akimbo within the bunkers. The old sugar mill is said to be haunted. I believe it. The bioluminescent bay is like seeing stars in your hands and fireworks in the water. I don’t get emotional but that night I did. I could hear “I saw stars” by Coldplay (probably not the title but those words over and over) running back and forth through my head as I looked above and below and saw heaven. The milky way is so close you can almost reach up and touch it. This land has many issues and troubles, but the good outweighs the bad. After Hurricane Maria my production company made a documentary about the struggles of Vieques. This is after I had owned my home for several years. It’s called Broken Worlds- The Island and can be seen now on Amazon. Do you think you’ve seen real wild horses? Well you probably haven’t. There are horses everywhere on Vieques Island. They roam free but are not wild. The indigenous people, the Taino people believe that all animals should be free. They find their horses when they want to ride them. Same with dogs and cats, except for the riding!
The experiences you will have on island can go from highest level adventure to a low impact beach house family vacation. If you want to help Vieques go there and visit. Meet the people. It helps to know some Spanish. But even if you don’t the viequenses will help you. They are the kindest people. Their ancestors, Taino, used wooden swords to fight wars. That is how peaceful they were. And are. Love abounds here. Beauty is rampant and when these things conjoin, Magic is made. I saw a tv show that presented deeply discounted Caribbean beach houses. Since I am a filmmaker, I went there to take a look. Crazy place with very few permanent residents. Maybe 9000 at most during high season. Saw old bunkers, the oldest Ceiba tree and the brightest bioluminescent bay on earth. Climbed Mount Pirata. Bought a beach house. Now I live there part of the year when I am not on set.

I love the beach view. It's amazing. I like to walk to various panaderias and desayuno (breakfast and coffee places) for fresh bread and breakfast. I also walk to the pier next to the ferry for fresh seafood. Also, there are two colmados (grocery stores) up the street. The island has everything. Beaches, the brightest biobay on earth, forests, beach caves, snorkeling, unbelievably beautiful place on earth.
