Our apartment is in a gorgeous brownstone with parquet floors (hardwood in the basement) and original details like crown molding. High ceilings, high speed wireless internet, and a compact but very functional kitchen round out the space.

The Space

This is a very large, beautiful, private bedroom with tall ceilings and parquet floors. There are two closets in the room; one is for host storage, the other is available for guest use. There are two rentable spaces in the apartment; this one and the finished basement (airbnb listing: Serene, quiet basement @ 9th & Pine). Lissa has been a long-time astronomy fan, and has decorated the room with an astronomy theme. Your host, if on site, stays in the semi-private loft above the kitchen and bathrooms.

Check in is flexible, check out is before noon (dropping off bags early or leaving bags in our living room later is fine). Exceptions are possible, please ask when making your reservation.

Guest Access

You're welcome to use the kitchen and livingroom. There's a Whole Foods and a Superfresh within 1.5 blocks if you want to save money by eating in.

We have the following amenities available to our guests: coffee, tea, tourism information, maps, transit schedules, local restaurant menus, an iron, hair dryer and well as soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion.

Interaction with Guests

We have a friendly, cuddly cat named Cheeba. He's an older fellow so he mostly takes naps and looks out the windows. He will be your new best friend if you pet him; he adores attention! He isn't allowed in the guest rooms, though. We keep a clean house, and the hardwood floors help, but those with pet allergies be warned: this is Cheeba's house too.

The Neighborhood

Stay in one of the most beautiful, safe, and walkable parts of Philly. We're just outside the gayborhood, 1.5 blocks north of South Street, 4 blocks from the Italian Market, and Washington Square Park is only 4 blocks away. We're 1 block from Pennsylvania Hospital, 2 blocks from Jefferson Neuroscience and the Kimmel Cancer Center, and 5 blocks from Jefferson Hospital.

Shopping- We're surrounded by fantastic shops from the affordable Philly Aids Thrift to the fancy Jeweler's Row, Antique Row, and Chestnut Street shopping district.

Restaurants- We're surrounded by some of the BEST restaurants in Philly, from cheese steaks to Egyptian food, and something in every price range.

Please check out our guidebook on this listing for more details about our neighborhood.

Getting around

We're 5 blocks from the Broad street line, 7 short blocks from the Market Street line and PATCO, and 1 block from several bus lines. There's so much to do in the area you may not even need to leave the neighborhood.

Other Things to Note

Smoke free home, and we are LGBTQIA and alternative relationship friendly. We're very child friendly but not child-proofed; the room is large enough to hold a traveling crib or playpen.

  • I had a big, airy bedroom overlooking the street. Lissa (my host and upstairs loft tenant) was charming, helpful and unobtrusive. Fresh linens and towels greeted me, and when I asked for an additional pillow, it appeared that same day.

The loft space is curtained off from the living room area, and there is an additional basement room whose staircase descends from a corner of the living room, making the apt. a 3-level, 3 tenant space. While I was there, the basement room was also continuously rented but nonetheless we didn't bump into each other much. I can see where you might need some careful planning for the single bathroom if everyone is on the same schedule though. The apartment is calm and quiet but be aware that passerby and cars going by outside the window can be disturbing if you're not used to urban living. There is a complete kitchen for essentials, but if you're looking for a place where you can cook complete meals for multiple people, this apt. would not be my first choice. OTOH, if you're planning to enjoy the many great restaurants within easy walking distance of the apt., you can't go wrong here.

  • There are pros and cons about this stay. The good things are the location- you can walk to downtown, very very convenient, the high ceiling-I haven't stayed any place with so high ceiling, it's beautiful. The apartment is in a historic building full of detail.
Lissa is kind and likes to make conversations and share information.
    As to the cons,
    1. The photos are not true to what it is. The living room, which is the first thing you see as you enter the place, is not as organized, clean as the picture shows.

2.The bedroom is right on the busy street, so you surely can hear people's conversation, continues traffic. There is the big, comfortable mattress on the floor. The sheets and bedding don't look so clean or fresh. The white is turning yellow.

3.The shared bathroom is not clean or organized. There are the host's personal cleaning products in most of the space and I washed the top shelf before I put down my clothes.

Generally, the location is awesome. The cat is cute. I didn't feel welcome to stay.

  • Lissa is pretty nice!!

  • Get in touch with the hosts as soon as possible when you arrive! They may have active discount codes for local attractions that you were going to see anyway! Chad and Lissa were very friendly and sociable. In the room, you will clearly hear the conversations of people walking down the street since you're right up against it, and the room gets cold, so don't forget to plug in the heater in the corner.

The neighborhood was safe and I walked everywhere during the week I stayed. Check the weather forecast before you come down so you can pack appropriately!

  • This was a great place! The location is really outstanding. Walking in every direction there was something to see and do. The apartment was lovely and clean. While I never met Chad, he was friendly and helpful. I recommend staying here!

  • The house- safe and central location. Very close to Whole food store, the tube station and a few pubs too.

Room - Very big room, basic and fairly clean. Had a big bed, a side board and another storage unit in the room. Being on the roadside, it was a bit colder than the rest of the house and as the storm and super low temperatures were hitting when I stayed, central heating was a bit less effective. Yet Lissa was kind to suggest to bump up the heat to be more comfortable.

Host - I only met Lissa and she was nice to talk to. Gave me a £5 discount voucher for a local attraction as well. Chad gave some discount on the room price to accommodate my budget.

Bathroom - It was tiny yet clean and functional. Toilet door did not lock due to malfunctioning door knob.

Kitchen and living room - clean and functional.

Thanks guys for your kindness and having me at your place.

    From London.

  • Lissa was most welcoming and we shared some of our passions the minute I walked in. The room was clean and warm and in a good location, I could walk to all my city adventures. Thanks!

  • This was an ideal place to stay for the marathon. It was close to downtown, clean, and affordable. Thanks Chad and Lissa!

  • Location for the price is the best reason to stay here. I haven't slept on a mattress and box spring on the floor since college. No place to sit other than bed. A closet with no hangers. Not even a paper cup in the shared bathroom. Quiet, clean and walkable to most everything is the best I can say.
