Kitchen/Bath/Extras

Your kitchen is fully equipped and has cooking utensils, tea pot, coffee maker and a view of the garden. We have coffee and tea available every morning. The shared bath is original 1920s deco and is super clean. We use only "green" cleaning products!

In the summer there is a garden and fire pit to enjoy. Laundry service is available. Wifi is available at no charge. Street parking near house. House is shared with our friendly, outgoing family (2 adults and a teenager) two dogs: a sweet, lazy mutt named Nina and a silly, friendly Bichon named Buddy Guy. We are normally on the first floor.

Recommendation

My family stayed at Deborah's place this past fall. Deborah's place was our first stop in our family's cross-country move to the Twin Cities. We enjoyed the homey, family atmosphere, and Deborah and her family were very welcoming and friendly. The neighborhood is wonderful, with many amenities in walking distance. An added bonus: Deborah's extensive knowledge of the local community and activities around town helped us quickly get involved in our new community. - Maureen

Merriam Park

We love hosting students, their families and others who want to experience our unique neighborhood. We are located 1 mile from the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River with numerous hiking trails, close to I-94, near parks, biking and running paths, Nice Ride bicycle rentals, Whole Foods grocery store, theater, Choo Choo Bobs (just like the show), St. Paul's premier gourmet coffee shop - Kopplin's, the Blue Door - home of the Juicy Lucy, and a local foods treasures - Trotter's Café and award-winning Izzy's Ice Cream! The neighborhood is well known for our vintage shops and antique stores. Most of the area colleges are close by.

Transportation

We are within walking distance of the new light rail line! We are on major bus lines for both cities. Amtrak is a few blocks away. Taxis are available 24/7. Its easy to rent bikes at any of the nearby NiceRide stations - Simply take a bike when you need one, and return it to any station in the system when you arrive at your destination. It's fast, easy and affordable. The airport is a ten min drive and less than $20 taxi ride. There are several car share programs in St. Paul.

What to do

Saint Paul is home to beautiful Como Park and Conservatory and one of the only free city zoos in the country. The Children's Museum, Minnesota Science Museum, Excel Center, History Museum and the state Capitol are some things St. Paul - "America's Most Livable City" - has to offer. Check out the city website for numerous festivals. Minneapolis is the premiere arts destination in the Midwest and home to the Guthrie Theater, the Walker Art Gallery, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Cedar Cultural Center, over 300 live music venues, great dining and major sports teams (Vikings and Twins). It's also been named most bike-friendly city in the US. Each city has its unique charm, adventures and secrets for you to find!

We love all things local and promote nearby independent businesses like restaurants that feature local food, local music and art as well as the history and heritage of Minnesota and invite you to learn about our northern culture and diverse cities. We can help you find fun things to do in the area and can even set up tours for you. Our website also promotes local businesses, festivals and events in rural Minnesota - from the prairies and lakes to the Great North Woods.

Check with us about local events or even an occasionally house concert or backyard jam. We've hosted events featuring artists like Papa John Kolstad and the Hot Club on the deck. Don't worry - those are scheduled in advance and we're always quiet in the evenings.

We think you'll have a great time in Saint Paul. Thanks for checking us out!

Guest Access

Full kitchen, shared bath, wifi, laundry, street parking. We can provide a loaner bike for one guest.

Interaction with Guests

We pretty much keep to ourselves on the 1st floor but are available for questions about the neighborhood, the area or to have a cup of tea! We are avid travelers and enjoy hosting people - and often end up staying in touch with many of our guests.

The Neighborhood

Friendly, 1880s historic area, vintage shopping, close to colleges and universities, focus on "local" and independent stores and restaurants. Near parks and river road along the Mississippi River. Transportation to "Uptown" MPLS about 15 minutes. To MSP International Airport about 10 minutes. Pretty much in the middle of everywhere. Safe and lovely.

Getting Around

Major bus routes. We are six blocks from the brand new green line of the Twin Cities Metro which will take you to downtown St. Paul, downtown Minneapolis, the UMN, Union Depot, the airport and the Mall of America. From spring thru fall the Nice Ride bike share program offers bikes 1 block away. There are car sharing programs in the neighborhood too.

Other Things to Note

Not handicap accessible. Stairs to third floor are steep. Cannot help with luggage. Lots of guidebooks, books about Minnesota and maps are available in the kitchen and rooms. Wifi is available. No cable or tv. We do not loan computers (people have actually asked this and no, we do not). We are into the arts and food scene so can provide good tips and sometimes discount tickets to local happenings. Check out our ever growing personal guidebook here on Airbnb. Please arrive by 8pm or make arrangements in advance. No arrivals after midnight - sorry but you'll have to make alternative arrangements if you arrive that late.

I'm a sustainable tourism consultant and have traveled, worked and lived in over 30 countries. My favorite places are NYC, Washington state, Washington DC, Vermont, India, Mexico and the North Shore/Great woods of northern Minnesota.

I'm a foodie, enjoy film and great music. Some of our best family holidays are to places like the Winnipeg Folk Festival where we were in front of the stage dancing like crazy with Michael Franti. I enjoy almost any type of travel - by camel, elephant, horse, boat, train, plane, car or feet - and I've done all of those. Travel can help us not just explore the world, but gain a better appreciation for all types of people, cultures and places. It helps us see where we are from with new eyes.

In the summer you'll find me in the garden - I love pesto and make it fresh all summer. We also grow our own grapes and make our own maple syrup from the trees in our yard. My husband and I are a bit bohemian in our travels and tastes. We love all kinds of music and I volunteer often at the Cedar Cultural Center www. (URL HIDDEN) which has some of the best live music in north America.

We spend most of our time on the first floor and will not bother you. We are low maintenance guests when we travel and welcome same. However, if you need anything please let us know! Whether its a suggestion for a nearby coffee house or a fantastic restaurant, the music scene, the arts scene, outdoor activities, museums, shopping, local food and locally made brewskies, how to get around - we got you covered! We love hosting artists and musicians!

We love learning about our guests and have had some AMAZING experiences - one of our favorites was a Japanese guest who taught us how to make sushi and wrapped all of our Christmas gifts (that we were giving) for us in origami style. She was here during the tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan so we became family! We've had numerous guests come back numerous times - I think that says a lot about the people who enjoy the down home airbnb style as well as our lovely, welcoming neighborhood.

We're not on the highway and you won't find a McDonalds nearby. Our home is 140 years old so if you expect modern then this is not a place you will be comfortable staying at.
