Located only 2.5 miles from the entrance of the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, in the village of Volcano (not in Mountain View, and not in the community across the road from Volcano - this is the real thing). One mile each way from the Cooper Center and Volcano Art Center.
Escape to a secluded rainforest paradise, where the only noises are raindrops on the many skylights and birds in the morning. Located in the cozy little village of Volcano, you are only about a mile away from the entrance to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, making this the your perfect home base to explore the park and spend evenings by the fire. We are only 45 minutes from Hilo and the Hamakua coast, and about an hour away from South Point and the wonders of its wild beaches (including the famous Green Sands Beach).
You will have a private room with a queen size bed in a fully equipped home with kitchen, wireless broadband, free laundry facilities, a warm fire stove, a beautiful and sunny covered lanai (outside porch), verdant gardens, board games and a shower room to die for. The only place in the house without a view to beautiful greenery is probably underneath your bed. After a visit to Madam Pele, you will come home to a cozy spot where the stars are so bright it looks like you could touch them. The pictures do not come close to doing this beautiful place justice
Come enjoy the cool mountain climate of Volcano, visit its arts center, drive down Chain of Craters Road, wander outside amongst the giant tree ferns or just retreat for a couple of quiet days to relax and recharge your batteries.
Guests have access to all house facilities and all linens and towels are provided. There is ample off street parking (uncovered) and we also have a laundry room with washer, dryer and detergent (though you are welcome to bring your own too). Bedrooms have individual keys for privacy, all else is shared, but the house consistently attracts pleasant, considerate people who are great to meet and are conscientious about the shared spaces.
Fully stocked kitchen- toaster, blender, slow cooker, salad spinner, all cooking utensils, etc.
Books, movies, & games in common areas for down time.
Extra towels, sheets and blankets in laundry room.
Interaction with Guests
Melissa, the caretaker of the property, does not always stay at the residence but is a phone call/text/ or email away. When she is in the house, she does her best to provide a balance of hospitality & privacy.
Volcano is a quiet, green community that is the home of artists, professors, and retirees. What really defines it and sets it apart is the fact that the majority of residents try to preserve the forest around their houses and keep it pristine. It is secluded, but once you get on the highway you are right at the Volcanoes national park – be boundary to the park is Volcano itself. We are high up on the mountain (4,000 ft. / 1,000 m), so the climate is cool, with chilly nights made for fireplace times and we get almost daily rain showers together with clear blue skies. We do recommend shopping for groceries in Kona or Hilo if you are staying for longer periods, as you will have greater selection and better prices.
Public transportation is not really adequate and stops far from the house. We recommend a rental car. The last stretch of road is not paved, but it is passable even for a compact car.
Please no smoking or parties. We love a good, lively home, but try to keep our voices down after 10 pm.
Incredible spot, and the people who run it are really sweet. Just a short 10 min drive from the volcano. Magical jungle cottage just like the pictures with tons of natural light. Loved the coffee and meeting new peeps upstairs. The volcano was cool, but the air BNB was competing for coolness. :) You should definitely book this place!!
This place is amazing! Awesome location and such an incredible home. You really do feel like you're in the middle of the rainforest.
The place is a little difficult to find but Alex did mention this when we booked it and the directions he gave us were excellent but just make sure you pay attention to them ;)
We shared the house with another couple while we were there and you never feel like you're in each other's way as the house is spacious enough.
And it was actually really nice to have the occasional kitchen catch-up as you would mostly meet like-minded people here I would think.
Wonderful! What a great place. I booked at the last minute and Alex was super helpful making it possible. The place is just like the pictures and the location of you are looking to spend time at the Volcano park is ideal! Please make sure you follow his directions it is a bit out of the way but that makes it more charming. Still super close to the park entrance.
The pictures do not even do this place justice – it was absolutely beautiful and conveniently located right beside the national park. It also smelled great. Bread/toast and jam were provided for breakfast, in addition to tea and coffee. Although we did not meet them in person, Brandy and Alex were easy to contact and had great recommendations on what do on the Big Island. For future travelers, I would recommend bringing warm clothes because it gets a bit cold/damp at night (there is a fireplace though and lots of blankets), getting a car, and to do grocery shopping on the way from Hilo or Kona because there’s not much around volcano village and things seemed to close early. This was my first airbnb booking and was very pleased with it. Overall, my partner and I had a great stay and would definitely return - mahalo!
What a cool house! Spacious and beautiful, it's a wonderful spot extremely close to Volcanoes National Park. The hosts left us everything we would need, including coffee and bread for breakfast. Made for a convenient early morning trip to see the glow of Kilauea. Highly recommended.

About the Host, Alex
I am Brazilian, originally from Recife, and have lived all over the world in the past few years. I used to live in Atlanta, then London, Rio and now in Hong Kong. I am an AirBnB host in Hawaii, where my houses are managed by my good friend Melissa, the hospitality queen. I have stayed in several AirBnB listings in my trips around the world, and traditional hotels are virtually dead for me.
