Away from the tourist areas of Kona, this quiet, private flat is in a plantation style house, on an acre and a half, at a cool 1600' elevation. The property is a 10 minute drive from the Kona Airport, 12 minutes from Kailua-Kona town.
A perfect place for a quiet vacation in Kona! On the flanks of Mt. Hualalai, you will find rain forests, coffee plantations, art galleries and the rich cultural life of Hawaii. Beaches, restaurants, and tourist activities are a short 10-15 minute drive away.
The house is at the end of long driveway, adjacent to state land, so it is private, with a beautiful view of the coastline. The unit is half of the downstairs, separate from the upstairs family quarters.
The 650 sq. foot (60.4 sq. meters) unit includes a bedroom, bathroom (with shampoo/conditioner, etc), a living area with a double futon bed available, and a kitchenette (including a fridge, microwave, induction element, coffee maker and sink) so that guests can make breakfast, create a picnic lunch or cook a basic dinner.
The property has many fruit trees, and we love to share bananas, papayas, oranges, tangerines, or avocados ~ whatever is in season ~ with our guests.
We hike, swim and dive, and we are happy to provide information and recommendations about where to go for recreational or cultural experiences. We love the Big Island, and want to share this special spot with others. We both come from a strong tradition of hospitality and look forward to helping guests to have the best experience of Hawaii during their stay.

We stayed with Kate and Neil for only three nights but wish to have stayed longer. We didn't meet Neil but Kate was just lovely. She had baked banana bread for us, warmly welcomed us and gave us a tour of the fantastic garden and all its fruits. The place and especially the garden is fantastic - felt as if we were in paradise. We loved it soo much to hang out in the garden that we replaced some sightseeing by that and just enjoyed. We recommend this place 100%.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful place. The view, garden and our host were the best in our two months travelling. A place where you want to build your home...and do not want to leave!!!!!
We were made feel very welcome from the moment we arrived for our 10 day stay - even though it was very late at night with flight delays. Kate's banana bread was divine and we certainly never came across better on our Hawaiian trip! A high bar was definitely set.
The flat is perfectly described & we loved it. It's is close to town by car but far enough away to only have sounds of nature at night. The garden is amazing with lush leaves and tropical fruit trees. The avocado tree was a particular hit! It was a real treat to wander the gardens and discover what could be found and eaten!
We travelled to Kona for Ironman & spent a lot of time at the flat so cooked most meals from home pre race week and watched the amazing sunsets on offer over the sea horizon from the patio area. The flat has everything you could need to be self sufficient and being able to launder clothes was very helpful for a long trip.
Kate and Neil were kind and generous hosts with some great advice & info on the big island and also for our onward travels which proved to be very beneficial. They also showed a genuine interest in us and were keen supporters of David competing in Ironman.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful home to stay in whilst visiting Kailua Kona.
Many thanks to our hosts for great Hawaiian experience.
Jemma & David
Amazing place and amazing hosts. Staying at Kate and Neil's is like staying with old friends and even better: we've been warmly welcomed, spoiled with homemade banana bread and fruits from the orchard, inspired by enthusiastic suggestions about what to see and do on the island. Just invaluable. And the house itself keeps all promises: conveniently located but nicely isolated, incredible view on the ocean, fully equipped and decorated with lovely good taste in any detail. We'd never leave.
We stayed at Kate's and Neil's stunning place for four nights and were truly sad when we had to leave this morning to catch our flight to Maui! Kate and Neil live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, the view is breath-taking and so is their garden (it seems as if they grow every fruit possible), their house, and above all the apartment we stayed at. Everything was brand new, spotless and you can really feel (and see) all the love, attention to detail and work Kate and Neil put in to make us feel at home! The pictures on their site are already great but being there they do not match the beauty of their place (their house is on top of a hill surrounded by lush forrest in a very pretty, safe and quiet neighbourhood but still close to Kona). The perfection of the place was even topped by Kate's and Neil's personalities. They are wonderful, warm-hearted people who made us feel at home from the very first second (to be honest, we actually felt like staying with friends rather than being just guests). Kate even baked an amazing banana bread for us (using home-grown bananas, of course:-)), they also invited us to a welcome drink and to share the sunset together. Both are extremely interesting, open-minded people, always with a smile, who have travelled a lot themselves and thus know exactly what traveller's wish for. We felt truly blessed to be their first guests and can only highly recommend their place to anyone who is looking for an OUTSTANDING experience. Kate and Neil, thanks so so much for all the great tips, enriching conversations, your helpful attitude (even calling the Diving Company for us), your smile and great sense of humour! You really spoilt us!
To sum up five stars do not seem enough to evaluate the unforgettable time we had at your place! If only we could have stayed longer... We hope to be back soon!
We live on Hawaii Island, the largest and southernmost island in the Hawaiian chain. Lovers of hiking, ocean swimming and diving, wholesome food, and good books, we embrace Life in all its varied forms.
Originally from the Bay Area and Australia, we've lived in Hawaii for 25 years; this is where our children were born and raised. (They are now adventuring adults exploring other parts of the world.) We are happy to share the beauty, cultural richness and peace of this island.
