A brief history:
The “Old Butter House” building at the Blackgate dates from the 1890’s. It was once a busy trading centre for the people from the North and West of the peninsula who were able to sell home produced butter and eggs there. In 1968 English born artist, Alice Moore West bought and restored the building for use as a rural craft museum. For many years the Black gate Museum was her home as well as being open to the public. She encouraged young people to learn craft skills in her basement workshop and was an enthusiastic patron of traditional music. On her death she left the building to the community to continue her work. The Community Council has renamed the Old Butter House the Alice West Centre and today, in the recently renovated building many of Alice West’s paintings are displayed alongside her collection of rural antiquities.
The peninsula is home to the Sheep’s Head Way walking route which is justly famous, and the peninsula has been designated as a European Destination of Excellence in recognition of the unspoilt and spectacular nature of the landscape in this beautiful part of West Cork. The area is steeped in history, with an an abundance of interesting sites - stone circles and gallauns; ringforts and castles, holy wells, copper mines and signal towers.
The population of the area is approximately 1200 people and the “locals” are a very eclectic and diverse group of farmers, fishermen, musicians, artists and a celebrity or two!
The colourful villages of Durrus, Ahakista and Kilcrohane en route provide local amenities including the local farmers market, galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars.

The Black Gate Loft is a perfect place to calm down and to enjoy ths surrounding nature. The view form the bedroom is absolutely amazing. Annette was very friendly and gave us all the information we needed. The appartment was very clean and comfortable. We were really sad that we couldn't stay longer than for 3 nights.
This is an amazing little place on a lovely and lesser visited peninsula. We had a very nice (and flexible) welcome from Annette who fitted in with our changing plans very happily .
The apartment feels very new and is spotless and very well equipped. The view from the bedroom is spectacular.
We cycled right round the peninsula which is well worth doing, and did the walk to the lighthouse which is also beautiful.
I recommend the food and drinks at Arundel's bar in Ahakista. On a sunny evening sitting outside it's pretty hard to beat.
Added to the great value of the place, I'd highly recommend a trip to the Sheep's Head peninsula.
A lovely place in a fantastic location. Sheila and Annette are great to deal with. This is our second time staying in this place and we'll probably be back again.
What an enchanting experience, I sincerely wish we could have stayed longer. The view from the bedroom was the best we saw in all of Ireland, and when you step outside you only see more. The apt was sparkling clean, had VERY comfortable beds with freshly ironed linens, the full kitchen and washer and dryer were perfect. It was a remote and safe-feeling location for two women travelers. The hostess and the people of the area were all very kind and pleasant. Highly recommended.
Everything was perfect. Warm welcome from host. Cosy living area. Well equipped kitchen. Lovely views out to sea. Great location for walks on the Sheeps Head.

I'm Sheila, I'm from Ahakista,
I've lived on the peninsula most of my life apart from a few years backpacking around the world and getting my degree in Woodwork teaching. I have been an Airbnb host for 3 years in my own stone cottage in Ahakista. It's always interesting to meet new people from different cultures.
Hi my name is Annette,
I am married with 3 children. I moved to the area about 12 years ago, and fell in love with the area as well as a local man.... I work with the local Community Council and my colleague Eileen O'Mahony and I manage the loft accommodation on behalf of the Community Council. We are part of a great team of people who strive to promote our area and to provide community services for all ages within our local rural community.
All the proceeds from Airbnb are invested back into the local community. Money is used to maintain the Alice West Centre and to support local community council projects throughout the year.
When I have some spare time, I try to indulge my love of music, both Irish and County music. I am part of a group of Set Dancers that compete in local and national dancing competitions and I am also a member of the local church choir.
I love meeting new people and thoroughly enjoy when people come to stay with us at the Blackgate. It is nice to meet people from other parts of the county and from all over the world. Everyone has their own story, some come to get away from work, some to catch up with the family, and others like to take some time out to clear their head and explore the beautiful area of West Cork.
People love the peace and quiet the place has to offer.
I look forward to meeting many more people via Airbnb. See you soon.
