A brief history:
The “Old Butter House” building at the Blackgate dates from the 1890’s. It was once a busy trading centre for the people from the North and West of the peninsula who were able to sell home produced butter and eggs there. In 1968 English born artist, Alice Moore West bought and restored the building for use as a rural craft museum. For many years the Black gate Museum was her home as well as being open to the public. She encouraged young people to learn craft skills in her basement workshop and was an enthusiastic patron of traditional music. On her death she left the building to the community to continue her work. The Community Council has renamed the Old Butter House the Alice West Centre and today, in the recently renovated building many of Alice West’s paintings are displayed alongside her collection of rural antiquities.
The peninsula is home to the Sheep’s Head Way walking route which is justly famous, and the peninsula has been designated as a European Destination of Excellence in recognition of the unspoilt and spectacular nature of the landscape in this beautiful part of West Cork. The area is steeped in history, with an an abundance of interesting sites - stone circles and gallauns; ringforts and castles, holy wells, copper mines and signal towers.
The population of the area is approximately 1200 people and the “locals” are a very eclectic and diverse group of farmers, fishermen, musicians, artists and a celebrity or two!
The colourful villages of Durrus, Ahakista and Kilcrohane en route provide local amenities including the local farmers market, galleries, cafes, restaurants and bars.

My wife, Lisa, and I had a wonderful weekend at The Black Gate Loft. Annette was tremendously helpful in facilitating our arrival and made us feel very welcome. The Black Gate Loft was better than described - just secluded enough, breathtaking views, with all the amenities we needed to enjoy a quiet weekend away. Maps were available with detailed information regarding hiking trails for all levels of hikers. We absolutely will plan to stay here again, and anyone considering this location should welcome the opportunity to have The Black Gate Loft as your home away from home.
Our hostess sent us some great directions via the scenic route along "Goats Path" which we found very humorous and then her phone number so we could call when we got close. She met us in town so we could follow her to the property, got us oriented to the place, left us fresh milk in the fridge for our coffee or tea and then left us alone, with her phone number in case we should need anything. She was friendly, funny and thorough. The Black Gate Loft is a bit out of "town" and right on several lovely walking paths in the area. It has a washer and dryer, which was great as we had been almost three weeks in Ireland, and it was nice to be able to wash and dry our clothing. The unit has a small kitchen with everything you might need to prepare meals. It also has a cozy living room with a pellet stove, which is a bit "fritzy" so it should be made workable. But there were heaters in each room so we were very cozy. It was a clean, cozy, quiet place to enjoy Ireland and the bedroom has a magnificent view. As a word of caution, food in the town of Kilcrohane is limited, so bring what you need for breakfast and/or lunch. There is a reasonable cafe in town for dinner, but other wise it is between a 10 and 30m minute drive for groceries and breakfast because nothing close was open in the morning.
About the Host, Sheila
Hi there Airbnb guests,
We are the Community Council for the Sheeps head/Kilcrohane/Ahakista and surrounding areas. You will mostly will be dealing me Sheila on emails and Annette or Eileen who both work part time for the community and will probably be the ones who will meet you. The funds from the Airbnb rentals will go towards upkeep building and fund lots of community projects such as the older peoples social club, Kids/family Easter egg hunt, Youth groups etc.
I'm Sheila, I'm from Ahakista,
I've lived on the peninsula most of my life apart from a few years backpacking around the world and getting my degree in Woodwork teaching. I have been an Airbnb host for 3 years in my own stone cottage in Ahakista. It's always interesting to meet new people from different cultures.
Hi my name is Annette,
I am married with 3 children. I moved to the area about 12 years ago, and fell in love with the area as well as a local man.... I work with the local Community Council and my colleague Eileen O'Mahony and I manage the loft accommodation on behalf of the Community Council. We are part of a great team of people who strive to promote our area and to provide community services for all ages within our local rural community.
All the proceeds from Airbnb are invested back into the local community. Money is used to maintain the Alice West Centre and to support local community council projects throughout the year.
When I have some spare time, I try to indulge my love of music, both Irish and County music. I am part of a group of Set Dancers that compete in local and national dancing competitions and I am also a member of the local church choir.
I love meeting new people and thoroughly enjoy when people come to stay with us at the Blackgate. It is nice to meet people from other parts of the county and from all over the world. Everyone has their own story, some come to get away from work, some to catch up with the family, and others like to take some time out to clear their head and explore the beautiful area of West Cork.
People love the peace and quiet the place has to offer.
I look forward to meeting many more people via Airbnb. See you soon.
