The space
Tucked beneath the ever-changing skies of the Ben Ōhau Range, Alpine Cubes is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature. Our modern, cabin-inspired retreat embraces the raw beauty of the alpine landscape, where crisp mountain air, pure water, and some of New Zealand’s darkest skies invite you to experience a slower pace of life.
Thoughtfully designed with comfort in mind, the cabin is warm, welcoming, and filled with carefully considered details that create the feeling of staying in the home of a close friend. Every element has been chosen to help you relax, unwind, and feel completely at ease.
Designed for two guests, the cabin features a raised queen bed perfectly positioned to frame the silhouette of the Ben Ōhau Range. Spend quiet mornings beneath the skylights, curl up with a book in the light-filled living space, or prepare a meal together in the fully equipped kitchen before dining with mountain views.
As evening falls, soak in your private outdoor bath beneath a blanket of stars, or embrace the invigorating alpine waters with a cold plunge to leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.

Other things to note
WEATHER
Life in the mountains is beautifully unpredictable. Surrounded by an ever-changing alpine landscape, Alpine Cubes occasionally experiences strong winds, snow, heavy frosts, and hot summer days. We recommend checking the forecast and any road conditions before you travel, particularly during winter.
If severe weather makes the property inaccessible, a full refund will be provided. As alpine conditions can change quickly, we are unable to offer refunds due to weather alone if the cabin remains safely accessible.
Wind
The Mackenzie is well known for its powerful winds, which can occasionally exceed 100 km/h. If you’re spending time outdoors, please secure or bring inside any loose belongings.
Snow & Winter Conditions
Snow occasionally settles at ground level during winter. While the cabin remains accessible from the main highway without snow chains in most conditions, chains may be required if travelling via Lindis Pass or Burkes Pass. We recommend checking road conditions before setting off.
Summer
Long summer days can be warm and dry. The cabin is equipped with air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep you comfortable, and beautiful Lake Ōhau is just a five-minute drive away if you’d like to cool off with a swim.
Outdoor Bath
One of the highlights of Alpine Cubes is the private outdoor bath. Measuring two metres long and one metre wide, there’s plenty of room to relax beneath the stars.
The bath is heated by gas and takes around 40 minutes to reach a comfortable level. Once full, it stays warm for approximately an hour—perfect for a slow evening soak while watching the night sky unfold above.
It is designed to be enjoyed year-round. During periods of severe frost or snowfall, we cannot guarantee it will be operational, although systems are in place to minimise freezing.
For everyone’s safety, we kindly ask that you do not use glassware in or around the bath.
DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT
Rather than offering Wi-Fi, we’ve chosen to preserve the opportunity to slow down and reconnect with your surroundings. Mobile phone reception is available, although it can be patchy depending on your network. If you need to make a call, you’ll generally find the strongest signal near the lounge window or in the bedroom.
A FEW THINGS TO KNOW
The bathroom features a full-height picture window that brings the outdoors in, creating a peaceful sense of being immersed in the landscape. The glass is tinted for privacy, and with no close neighbours, you’ll still enjoy a secluded experience.
You’ll also notice there are no curtains or blinds throughout the cabin. This is intentional. Every window frames a different view of the surrounding mountains and skies, allowing you to wake naturally with the sunrise, watch the changing light throughout the day, and, on clear nights, enjoy the moon and stars from the comfort of your bed.
CHECK-IN
Your check-in details will be sent to you on the day of your arrival. If you have any questions before then, we’re always happy to help.
