The Space

Lovely wood barn built in 1990 that has been converted to a three bedroom house. The southern face and bright interior make for a cheerful space no matter what the weather or the temperature outside. Nice rugs, comfortable couches and reading chairs make it a cozy place to hang out and relax. The dining table can seat 10 comfortably and the host will often invite friends over for dinner and include the guests.

Guest Access

The main access to the barn/house is a non descript barn door inside of which you will find a keyed lock opening into a beautiful home. Depending on arrival times we will make arrangements for access to the keys or be there to greet you. Once you have arrived your schedule is your own access wise. There is a refrigerator and kitchen area with a bar/eating area with four stools for sitting and talking in addition to the living room and dining area.

Interaction with Guests

There will be yogurt and or bagels and coffee for breakfast at which time Bill can catch up with the guests. Always interested in speaking and interacting with the guests and asking about their interests and helping them have a successful and relaxing visit. I have traveled extensively throughout the states and the world so i can help with any and all interests. There is also an extensive supply of books in the house so if someone wants to curl up in a chair or just sit in one of the rockers out on the porch they are welcome to do so.

The Neighborhood

My house is located in the North Hollow area of Rochester which is a high meadow at 1400ft. The road we are on is a dead end with 6 houses. It is very peaceful with nice neighbors, hay fields, cows at different times of the year, and lots of wildlife. It is a year round community that caters to summer folks, skiers, bike riders, Middlebury College, Vermont Law School, Norwich University, UVM, VTC, (website hidden) Mike's, St Joseph and Dartmouth graduates. You can relax at the house and unplug from the world or make forays out into town and or the surrounding attractions.

Getting around

Rochester is centrally located in Vermont and accessible by car. Roads are well maintained so that folks can get to work, to a ski area or to anything else they might want to see and or do. An hour and fifteen minutes from Burlington Airport (BTV). Thirty minutes from one Amtrak line and forty-five from another. Rochester is 3 hours from Boston, 3.5 to Montreal, 4.5 to NYC. Under an hour to the Dartmouth/Hanover area. There are buses and trains outside of the valley.

Other Things to Note

Rochester is a lovely town with a great mix of Vermonters and what we call flatlanders(folks born outside of Vermont). Rochester has lots of theater with the White River Valley Players, concerts on the green, events at both Pierce Hall and an annual Suzuki event. It is only 20 minutes from the Middlebury College Breadloaf campus. The Warren/Waitsfield area home to Sugarbush, Mad River Glen and the Green Mountain Ski Academy are a half an hour to the north. Lots of summer residents from around the globe were campers in Vermont at Keewaydin, Killoleet and Windridge Tennis.

  • What an absolutely divine vacation! William made our stay idyllic with a warm welcome, a great fire outside where we could enjoy conversation, dark skies and bright stars, and sweaters which we borrowed gratefully (we were not expecting such cool temperatures, even though we were escaping hot Arizona weather!) The breakfast was delicious, healthy and hearty. He was sensitive to our dietary restrictions and we enjoyed his creative cuisine.
The location is so beautiful, peaceful and inspiring. We feel completely rejuvenated by our stay at William's place and can't wait to return. We'll be recommending "Bike and hike the Green Mountains" to all our friends and family. Thank you, Bill!

  • Bill was fantastic, mellow, cool and knowledgeable about the area. He was generous with his space and also gave us a wide berth to do our thing. Highly recommended!

  • We just returned from a great ski weekend in Vermont. Thanks to the snow Gods, two feet of fresh snow greeted us.
Thanks to fate and dumb luck, William greeted and hosted us at his lovely home. He welcomed two bedraggled travelers with great directions and after a very long night of driving - not only kept the light on - but had saved some dinner and drinks. Breakfast was great. The house is amazing - great artwork - beautiful vistas, comfy beds. All of that.
The best way that I can describe our stay is that it was like visiting an old friend. There was an instant sense of comfort, laughter and ease. In short - it felt like a home away from home.
This was our first airbnb experience. I didn't even realize that there were multiple pictures of the home and property. I simply read the prior reviews and reserved it on blind faith. There were excellent reviews from couples seeking a quiet weekend and single travelers; guests from near and far. They all had wonderful things to say and great experiences. I was travelling with my teenaged son - to add another category. My son - loved staying with William.
And then there is Shadow the dog. She appears to be a black golden retriever with the softest fur and sweetest eyes. She is pure love - the most mellow pup on the planet.
We are already planning our next trip to Vermont . We haven't decided where to ski - but we definitely know where we will be staying.
When you arrive, say hi to William and Shadow for us.

  • Staying with at Bill's place was an absolutely superb experience. The place is one of those hidden gems where you can easily lounge of the couch under a blanket and read books all day (one of us actually got sick and did just that). The room was spacious, bed comfy and everything spotless. Windows in the beautiful and cozy common room offer a view over wide stretching fields and pure tranquility. Easy access by car to both close cross-country skiing and downhill skiing just 40-50 away. We visited Sugarbush and Mad River and it worked excellent (although the snow at the time was not the best).
Bill as a host deserves a separate paragraph. He is one of those genuinely kind and incredibly generous people that you come across only so often (if ever). We could not have felt more welcome in his home, and enjoyed many evenings chatting and drinking locally produced cider. Bill knows the area like no one else and was very helpful in setting up our daily excursions.
If we ever come back to Vermont we know where to go.
    Enjoy your stay with Bill!

  • Bill's home was wonderful. It's in the middle of the Green Mountain National Forest area, a few minutes away from town, but seemingly and wonderfully in the middle of nowhere. It's a great escape from a chaotic life, but it's close enough to civilization to get a great cup of chai, see a play or go skiing at Killington, one of VT's best ski spots. The home is a converted barn & is incredibly cozy, with wide open spaces, a great big dining room table, living room & comfortable bedrooms. The view out the back door is idyllic. Exactly what you'd expect of VT. Bill is a great guy that I met while in the Himalayas many years ago. He's well read (as evidenced by the library on his wall), well traveled, as nice as can be, and loves good food & hockey (which are bonuses in my book). He's got an incredible dog that I bonded with immediately (I'm not a dog-person) that was so personable, so affectionate, and loved to run around in the snow & come back in to be toweled off. This was truly a winter wonderland, but I can't wait to return in the Spring, Summer and Autumn to see how beautiful the area & property are in each season! You should too!

Greenwich High School
Middle aged father of three all of whom have been launched. Have had an interesting and very diverse career that has allowed me to travel and work within Europe and Asia as well as throughout the US. Interests from non traditional farming, optics, high speed manufacturing, all forms of energy, traditional as well as green, carpentry and design. Presently working as a consultant in the photonics business and restoring older Vermont homes. Love to travel and get to know different cultures and people. Prefer b&bs or renting apartments to staying in hotels. I enjoy traveling in Europe where English is not the first language. Figuring out how to get around and then taking in the local architecture which says so much about what is important for me. I love good conversation, good wine, a great cup of coffee, unusual cheeses and breads and i am always trying the local food where ever i travel. Dinner is about having a good conversation and discussing the things that are important in life. I also enjoy just sitting out on the porch watching the stars or the sun setting on the mountains listening to nature.
