Exceptional host communication

Recent guests gave Marta a 5-star rating for communication.
Play shop & visit cool places. Love books & old buildings? Look no further. Especially if you also dig small country towns, friendly locals, inexpensive cafes, pretty coastal /forest walks with waterfalls, gorgeous beach & being surrounded by tourist gems like Whitby. Please read whole listing before booking.

Minimum 3 nights. Shop’s core hours are 10-1 Thurs/Sat but you choose more as you wish. Longer stay discounts. OFFER 2 weeks 50%. Not suitable for children or pets. Stairs up to flat.

The space
Please note is not family friendy as full of fragile glass at odd n low heights plus lots of delicate ornaments everywhere and wool carpet you cannot use stain remover on etc.

Don’t panic. There is no till to master in the shop. Things are kept very simple. You just need to have decent maths and handwriting for noting sales.

You will be staying in the bookseller’s home in this beautiful quirky inviting old building - first lease was 1694! Recently opened Read and Rabbit Used Bookshop in Loftus is about creating a warm welcoming happy place. Profits from book sales fund affordable places on events to connect people and foster wellbeing. Come be part of it! It is a lot of fun being a bookseller and is always about the magic of human connection and appreciation of the arts.

Apart from the core 10-1 Thursday and Saturday you can be open as much as you like or dedicate this time to exploring God’s Own Country as the people of Yorkshire call it. If coming alone there are lots of organised walks you can join and you will find the locals very friendly.

This listing has two bedrooms but let us know in advance which beds you want made up you may want to just use the sofa bed as a sofa. Strictly 4 people maximum. You will have exclusive bookshop access 24/7 and be instructed how to take payment which is easy. You don’t get any money for sales or running the shop.

There is a tv with Netflix but no other channels and a digital internet radio.

Cafes (inc award winning Willow Cake Shop) and bakery with cooked breakfast are nearby as well as a restaurant and takeaways plus supermarket open 7am to 10pm daily just across the street. Feel free to bring food back to eat.

Guest access
You get to spend as much time in the bookshop as you like.

Where else can you cosy up to read? There is also a sun trap roof garden and conservatory overlooking the roofs towards the woods and stream.

You can hear owls, sheep and the local church bells chime. Rather charming really.

Kitchen can be used for simple quick cooking. There is no full size oven but there is an airfryer and small oven/grill plus microwave, toaster and hob.

One bathroom in the flat with bath and electric shower over and a new extra toilet in the outbuildings convenient if downstairs running the shop.

Other things to note
Three floors and many stairs to climb. The larger bedroom is on the middle floor where kitchen, bathroom, conservatory/dining room and roof garden are. No need to go to top floor unless you will also use that bedroom with reading/writing nook outside it.

You get 50% off if you stay for a month! Great way to spend a sabbatical etc. 20% off for 6 days plus. 30% for 2 week stay. 40% for 3 weeks. Be careful as many who holidayed in Loftus then wanted to move here to live :-).

Similar to The Open Book bookshop holiday in Wigtown (the original paid for opportunity to run a bookshop for some days), please note that this is neither a volunteer opportunity, nor paid work. This is a holiday experience that you are paying for, classified under cultural tourism where you become part of the book loving local community and are fresh blood for locals to socially interact with as that is the real magic of running a bookshop. It is the sole responsibility of the guests/residents to ensure that they adhere to any visa requirements or similar regulations.

Neighborhood highlights

You are on the High Street but little traffic passes overnight and at the back of the property you feel like you in the countryside is so quiet.

Right from the doorstep you can walk in woods behind which boast waterfalls, or a mile away is the stunning coastal path, or just walk to a cafe that beat 31 others to be winner of The Capital of Cake! Food is very reasonably priced in this area. Supermarket n a takeaway are also on the doorstep plus buses that will take you to Saltburn-by-the-Sea with cliff railway n famous pier, picturesque fishing village of Staithes, or Whitby where Bram Stoker wrote Dracula. We are in the North York Moors National Park too, not only with beautiful peaceful moorland but steam railway and stations done up in different eras. Loftus is an up n coming small town going through an exciting regeneration. Many who visit fall in love with it n move there! The new arts centre will be open for more exhibitions later this year.
