My cabin is located in the mountains of Costa Rica where the weather is springtime year round with green trees, flowers and lots of birds. With valley views, this is a quiet and relaxing place to spend your vacation with lots to do nearby.
This is a cabin located on the side of a mountain with sweeping views of Tuis and the valley below. The cabin is located on a farm with lots of different birds, coffee, fruit trees, hummingbirds, waterfalls, jungle and fish ponds. The area is known for white water rafting on the Pacuare and Reventazon. The active Turrialba Volcano is nearby. There are canopy tours, Pre-Colombian ruins, a snake farm, coffee tours, nature reserves, and many more things to do. Birders flock (sorry) to Rancho Naturalista to view the over 400 different species seen in this area.
The cabin has a living room with a TV with Claro satellite tv, DVD and movies are available, includes a furnished kitchen for cooking, a porch with rocking chairs and hummingbird feeders, there are two double beds and bunk beds. Wireless internet is available. A washer and dryer are available. The garage has space for one car.
For people interested in moving to Costa Rica I am happy to share my experiences in living here for 10 years.
Directions taking the bus: From San Jose go to the Turrialba bus station and take the express bus that leaves every hour, in 1 1/2 hours you are in Turrialba. Take the Tuis bus that leaves every hour and in 40 minutes you are in Tuis. There is a San Joaquin bus from Turrialba that brings you up to my driveway. At the start of my driveway is a large rock with a yellow cross painted on it. If you are on the San Joaquin bus tell the bus driver to let you off at Camino La Paulina. Here it is pronounced Pa-oh-leena.
Directions driving: From San Jose follow the signs to Cartago on Hwy 2 and continue thru town to Paraiso, from there follow the signs to Turrialba on Hwy 10. The road is paved and well maintained. Continue thru Turrialba on Hwy 10. You will cross the Reventazon River and start up the hill, turn right on the road to La Suiza, Hwy 232. Continue thru La Suiza to Tuis on Hwy 232. One half block past the bus garage turn left and start up the hill. Go three kilometers to where the road turns sharply to the right. There is a big boulder on the left with a yellow cross painted on it, turn left into my driveway. There are two driveways, take the level one. Go 2 blocks and you are here.
Guests have access to visit the farm with waterfalls, tilapia ponds and jungle trails nearby.
Interaction with Guests
I like to provide guests with information they might need and occasionally accompany them to show them the area. I give a tour of the farm with information about the birds, fruit trees, tilapia ponds, solar and other ongoing projects. I will be near the cabin to provide whatever is needed.
Tuis is a small village located in the mountains of Costa Rica. It has a store, bakery, meat market and bar. La Suiza 10 minutes away is bigger and has a bank, several stores, and some restaurants. Turrialba is 25 minutes away driving with many banks, markets, and most of what you will need. Nearby is the Golden Bean Coffee Tour, Snake Farm, Guayabo Nat'l Park, Irazu Nat'l Park, 16th Century church ruins at Ujarras, Casa de Sonador (wood carvings from coffee plant roots), Botanical Garden at CATIE, Trapiche (making sugar cane molasses) and rafting on the famous Pacuare River.
Buses to Turrialba run from Tuis on the hour. There are buses coming up the hill to my driveway on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat.
No smoking inside the cabin

More than a simple accommodation (that is btw super comfortable!), staying at Steve's place is an amazing experience! He took us for a tour of his jungle farm and shared with us the Flor de Itabo, a native flower that can be eaten as a delicious pasta. Thanks, Steve!
Many hummingbirds were coming close as they fed on the feeders on the porch.
Location was also perfect as Tuis is close to Pacuare river, one of the best ones in the world for rafting!
We absolutely loved staying in Steve's charming cabin! His hospitality was superb and we felt right at home. Hot water, stunning views, fresh eggs every morning, comfortable beds and wonderful wildlife all around. I highly, highly recommend his place. We drove all over the Reventazon region for over a week and found nothing else even close to how comfy his house was.
We had such a great time at Steve's place! It's nestled in the hills over Tuis, a small town close to Turrialba. Steve was a wonderful host and took the time to show us around the area, gave us some invaluable tips on other places in Costa Rica to visit, and things to watch out for etc... Thanks to his advice I avoided getting caught in a speed trap which would have cost a bundle! The cabin was just what we were looking for, hummingbirds buzz by to feed in the morning, and we saw toucans and countless other birds. We ate fresh eggs, fruits and veggies from Steve's farm which is surrounded by coffee and sugar plantations. Another big plus is his internet connection allows you to call the US for free.. We both wish we could have stayed longer and hope to return for another visit in the future. Highly recommended for people who want to experience the real Costa Rica. Thanks Steve!
My second stop on my 2 month CR roundtrip was at Steve´s
cabin on his Finca above Turris.
Watching the incredible variety of birds in the morningsun, listen
to the waterfalls and cascades, smell all the different plants, flowers and fruits, everything just on Steve´s ground...
this was the authentic CR country-living I am searching for.
Steve was an execellent host, friendly and helpfull at any time!
It has been a really great pleasue for me to stay with him and at this little paradise for 7 days.
Travelling without a car in this area was not easy in general.
But a work out and communicative en route anyway.
!Muchas gracias para todo, Steve!!
Quiet and relaxing is only the beginning with a stay at Steves delightful cabin on the mountainside above the village of Tuis. Informative, educational and above all welcoming are further attributes that must be mentioned with a stay here. Steve is the host with the most, happily sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience of Costa Rica and its rich and varied culture, flora and fauna. He provided us with an unforgettable experience and our only regret on our first trip to Costa Rica - not staying a while longer here. The cabin is really well appointed, but it is without doubt the farm that was the unexpected surprise - this is not just for bird lovers, but those that love all flora and fauna. Off the beaten path, the area around Tuis is full of color and life and the small city of Turrialba and surrounds offers a rich variety or rewards for travellers - especially with tips from or even guided by the ever generous Steve. We also had some of our best meals during our stay between Steves resto recomendations and the freshest of supplies that came from his farm. Thanks also goes to his friendly farm hand José who also left us with some wonderful memories. Well done guys, hope we can get back one day to see you and the dogs!
Couldn't ask for a more attentive, helpful host or for more spacious, comfortable accomodations. Wish we had stayed longer.
Steve offers a charming and rustic cabin located on a beautiful plot of land within a 25-minute drive of Turrialba. The cabin has all the essential comforts, but its location and Steve's generosity makes it the perfect base from which to enjoy the surrounding area. Perched on a hillside overlooking a green valley, and surrounded by fruit trees and wildlife, the cabin offers simple but comfortable accomodations. Holly especially enjoyed the birds and the profuse greenery, and my son enjoyed walking Steve's dog and exploring the hillside.
I, on the other hand, enjoyed rocking in the chair on the porch and drinking Pilsen with some lime from Steve's tree behind the cabin while hummingbirds zipped around the feeders.
Highly recommended for those looking for accomodations near Turrialba. Note: Steve can arrange bookings for whitewater rafting and other outdoor activities at reduced rates. We really enjoyed the Rio Pacuare rafting that he arranged for us.
I live on a 4 acre farm in the mountains of Costa Rica with fruit trees, coffee, hummingbirds, waterfalls, and jungle. My friends say I live in Paradise, and it's probably true. It is beautiful here, green, with flowers blooming year round. I teach English here. Also I am working on a solar and aquaponics system for my farm. People rave about Steve's Cabin, it is quiet and peaceful here. If you like birds we have them, too. Come check out beautiful Costa Rica and let me show you some Southern Hospitality on my farm.
