Enjoy a full size bed in our artistically renovated urban prairie home surrounded by fields, pheasants & our 5 neighbors. Biking/driving distance from downtown, arts & culture/university area & Southwest. We have 2 dogs & 2 gardens.

The space
Jhon got our home in 2007 when it was a shell, no wiring, plumbing and many of the walls and flooring was holey. Since then, it has become a beautiful artistic home with a garden where we live with our two dogs. Our 10-year-old nephew sometimes stays with us weekends.

Jhon's philosophy is to use what you have and also to honor history. Most of what's in our house has been created or repaired using salvaged materials. Many of the walls show the layers of wallpaper and paint from over the years--we would gently scrape away any flaking paint and then seal it in with a clear coat.

We don't consider the house "done" but we are a roofer & a violin teacher, so we do what we can when we get some savings or find the materials we need to complete a new project.

Private bedroom. Washing machine. Shared kitchen. Shared bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower. 2 shared living rooms and 1 shared library. Backporch & 2 gardens. Greenhouse. Art Park nextdoor. Surrounding fields.

Access to kitchen & fridge. Breakfast will be serve-yourself cold cereal (something good and organic) with whole milk from a Michigan dairy in the area. Also you can make coffee using our beans & French press with sugar, honey & milk available too.

Both of us work so we may not be able to spend long breakfasts or dinners chatting but it depends on the day and the week. We don't promise tours of the city or anything like that but we will offer suggestions and answer your questions.

I love that my neighborhood is surrounded by fields because it means we can run the dogs very easily, have wildflowers in the summer and explore with our nephew. I love our neighbors. We only have 5 houses on our block but we are like a family. Next to our house is an Art Park created & maintained (somewhat) by youth. I love that there are children in our neighborhood.

There is no convenient public transit. You can rent a bike from The Hub or Fender Bender--you could borrow one of our bikes if you are short like us & if our bikes are available. We are located a 10-15 minute bike ride from Southwest Detroit, Woodbridge, the Cass Corridor, Wayne State area, Detroit Institute of Art & the library.

We do have a few other spaces where more people can sleep including a 2nd guest room, the library day bed and the loft's queen size mattress.

If you are traveling with a small group that would like to stay a short amount of time, please ask about the other rooms.

We have had small groups do retreats at our house. The upstairs living room is very sweet for meetings since there are 2 couches and space to sit on the carpet with lots of pillows. Also our Smart TV could be handy.

Where you’ll be

I love that my neighborhood is surrounded by fields because it means we can go explore with the dogs, have wildflowers and black raspberries in the summer and pick pears and apples in the fall.

I love our neighbors. We only have 5 houses on our block but we are like a family. Next to our house is an Art Park created & maintained (somewhat) by youth.

I love that there are children in our neighborhood.

I love that we are close to lots of neighborhoods--Corktown (shows, food, beer, bike shop), Southwest Detroit (Mexican/Central American food, bakeries, cafe, Clark Park), Dearborn (middle eastern term food, comic/record shop), Cass Corridor (movies, yoga, food, beer, boutiques, bookstores, museums, library), Woodbridge (pretty old Victorians, Woodbridge Pub, Trumbullplex)

My partner Jhon and I love our house very much. We're excited to give you a tour, pointing out how each detail was built or repaired. Our dogs, Roofus and Clover, will likely follow, hoping to get pet.

I teach violin lessons & lead little kids' music classes around the city. Jhon sells records and repairs slate roofs. He's also a poet and is in the punk band called Collapse.

I am originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I've been in Detroit since 2006. Jhon was born in Detroit. His parents met in middle school in Southwest Detroit.

We like to go to the Detroit Film Theater and the Trumbullplex, where we met booking shows together. We attend the Allied Media Conference every summer and highly recommend it.

We got married in the Art Park next to our house on May Day 2013.
