Facing historical Carrigafoyle Castle once one of the strongest Irish fortresses in the country, referred to as the Guardian of the Shannon because of its strategic command of the shipping lanes that supplied the trading city of Limerick.
It was built in 1490 by the Conor Liath O'Connor-Kerry of the O'Connor Clan who ruled north Kerry.

It is a Gaelic Irish castle with a style borrowed from the Normans and out of 80 or so strongholds across Munster at one time it was deemed to be the most secure. An unusually wide spiral staircase of 104 steps leads to the battlements rising 26.4 meters which you can climb with many restored rooms and even a dungeon along the way up, with breathtaking views of the Shannon estuary and surrounding countryside. Opposite the castle is the medieval Church of Carrigafoyle which is built in the same style as the castle.

On the other side of the creek, the O’Connors also built the Friary of Lislaughtin in 1478, known locally as Lislaughtin Abbey (Lios Laichtin, meaning Lachtin's Dwelling). St Lachtin was the first to preach Christianity in the area. Two of the O'Connor chiefs are buried within its walls.

While Garrett was nice (we had little more than an introduction with Patricia), we would not stay at this location again in the future. There was some initial confusion over the number of guests in our family and we were told we would have to pay for another room. After some discussion, they worked it out for us since we had booked by # of people, not rooms. Based on other reviews we opted for the additional meal for dinner. While the food was okay, it was overpriced. We were able to feed our family for less $ with more food at every other place we ate in Ireland....including a 5 course meal at a castle. The accommodations served their purpose in that we had beds and a bathroom, but I would not stay longer than that. We did not have an opportunity to visit the castle the home overlooks , so I can't comment on that. In short, we felt the price we paid for the accommodations and dinner were high and for that reason, would not stay again. I will say that the breakfast was outstanding.

My wife and I loved our stay in this cozy little bed and breakfast. The location is great, with gorgeous views all around. Patricia and Garrett are both very friendly and accommodating, and we really enjoyed Irish breakfast in the morning. We opted for dinner one of the nights as well, and it was a nice home-style meal. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay in north Kerry, I highly recommend Patricia and Garrett's.

Your own Castle and Cows... Really? Incredibly transformative holiday. This gem and its owners will peel back the stress and transport you back to a time when men lived by their word and their hard work. We loved the stories Garrett shared, the one lane bridge to the property, the sound of the cows (though mourn-full as the calves were being culled from their mothers that weekend) and the spectacular Castle with its rich history. Mostly we lived Rosie, the dog:) Definitely recommend Patricia and Garrett’s BnB.

Like staying with a family friend. Garrett literally has the keys to the castle which is so cool to walk around in. We loved it and enjoyed our stay.
