A distinctive home--situated on the Vineyard Haven/West Tisbury line, well off the main road and in a dell surrounded by oaks and wild blueberries—the house offers a second floor with a separate entrance to two spacious bedrooms (each with twin beds), large bathroom with tub and shower, and book-filled sitting area. [You are looking at green bedroom; separate listing for blue bedroom.]
A sleeping porch with a net-covered double bed, sofa and chairs is available for those preferring romantic outdoor sleeping arrangements or just a cool spot to listen to the birdsong.
A large tent platform at 60’ from the house is another, more rustic option.
All windows look out onto exuberant gardens. There are several patio areas which provide peaceful spots to read, converse or simply dream, and the lawn in front of the house has a net ready for badminton or volleyball.
The building combines classic New England shingles with Mediterranean spaces and is filled with architectural salvage, antiques and handcraft acquired while living abroad.
This is a spot for those preferring to avoid the hubbub of an in-town location but not so remote as to require a half hour drive to the movies or the store. Great writer’s retreat. It is an easy bike ride into Vineyard Haven; and public transportation, which goes all over the island (and carries bicycles), is an 10-minute walk away. The bus from Vineyard Haven to West Tisbury operates hourly. Walking trails in one of the Vineyard’s many conservation areas are close by.
Beach towels and chairs available. Outdoor shower for après-beach. Continental breakfast and Wi-Fi available.
Check in time is 4pm unless other arrangements are made.

A perfect retreat. An exquisitely built home furnished in international art and antiques, and a delightful, friendly, informative host - what more could one want? Oh yes, special Peruvian-style coffee (think cafe-au-lait), homemade granola, a private entrance and balcony overlooking beautiful gardens, all in a forested retreat down a dirt road, yet biking distance from the VH ferry. I can't wait to go back!
What a treat for a week! A beautiful house, a beautiful garden, close enough to both Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury (for shops, restaurants and grocery stores - and I only used a bike and the bus), but far enough that you enjoy peace, privacy and nature. But the most memorable aspect of the stay was being hosted by Carol. She is simply a wonderful host, and I especially loved breakfast time, both for how yummy it was, and the good conversations it brought. It was hard to leave.
Carol's home was more than what I expected. It reminds me of an Italian villa. We loved the garden, the openness of the house and her wonderful greeting smile.
Get away from the touristy spots and into the woods. Wake up to roosters crowing, beautiful artwork, a quiet elegance everywhere you look...that's all here. My recollection of Martha's Vineyard was overturned by this place which shows you the side of the island people cherish; the green spaces, the wonderful people, the individuality of each home. It's a beautiful home, conveniently located, immaculate and stylish but that's the least of it - the best is Carol, who makes you feel like the place is yours and leaves no stone of comfort unturned. *Warning: you may get lost in the wide array of interesting reading material.
This was out first experience with AirBnB, and we're thrilled! I planned our trip to Martha's Vineyard for Labor Day weekend, a pretty busy one for the beach, but found this home to be reasonable and luxurious. We were a mile down a sand road, so we never heard car noises, just crickets and the occasional bird. We had our own entrance through the beautiful garden, up to the Italian-inspired porch with a double bed and mosquito netting that we could use-and our own entrance from our room. We enjoyed afternoons on the porch with glasses of wine. The home is inspiring, with glistening wood floors from Suriname and eclectic art, even in the bath (hand-painted tiles). We had plenty of closet and drawer space, and I was able to get a bit of work done with the excellent wifi available. Best of all, our hostess Carol was warmly helpful, letting us drop our baggage early and giving us beach chairs, bag and towels. There was a small refrigerator to use and a picnic basket, and lots of information about the island. We enjoyed delicious homemade granola breakfast one day and French toast the next, and Italian-style coffee-yum! We were especially fortunate when Carol also wanted to see a show in Oak Bluffs that would be difficult for us to get to without a car, so we all went together and had a tasty Thai dinner there afterward. We felt like welcome guests and not just B&B boarders. Next time we come to Martha's Vineyard, we'll bring our car with bikes and boats, as it's a bit of a struggle to get to West Tisbury on bikes with packs and bags.
Our host Carol made us feel very comfortable. The property itself was extremely neat and clean. I was very impressed with the quality and upkeep of this property. Carol was a very gracious host and was full of good information that was very useful. I would HIGHLY recommend this listing to anyone looking for a stay on the Island.
Carol made us feel FANTASTIC!. Her smile, her laugh..not to mention hefting a suitcase- but that may not apply unless you are as handsome as me:) Meet out expectations? R U kidding me? Close your eyes- see the villa in Tuscany or South America? How about West Tisbury! I was in home building for 35 years..trust me the photo is accurate, but there soo much more to this villa.
Richard, OMG, can I possibly live up to what you've written? Thank you very much. It was a great pleasure for me to have you and Sharon here for a short spell, and I know my other guests enjoyed having your company, too. Please come back; stay longer. How about photographing the Ag Fair? No other Built on Stilts performances that I saw compared with your troupe from CT. I hope Maine was fun. Carol
