About this listing
Quiet studio in the Whiteaker historic neighborhood, with private courtyard and deck. A short walk to cafes, a natural grocery, breweries, and wine tasting venues. A mile from the train station and downtown, and close to the river bike path.
IMORTANT: Please contact us (by clicking the red "Contact host" link) to ask about availability before you click "Book It." We want to accommodate you, but sometimes we are already in discussion with another guest on that date. We will respond quickly.
This is a studio next to our house, also available for rent (at times when we are out of town), Cozy Craftsman in the Whiteaker.
The studio is a warm sunny space fronting the courtyard, its front door shaded by a massive Cecile Brunner rose. It includes a queen bed with memory foam and a seating area by the window, with a private bathroom and a small semi-kitchenette ( frig, coffee pot, microwave, toaster, electric kettle and necessary dishes/glasses/flatware, etc.) We'll leave you some breakfast snacks in the frig and some locally roasted coffee.
You can rent this space alone, or for larger groups, along with the main house, if available.
About our location: We're on quiet 5th Avenue, but only a block away from the Whiteaker’s commercial district at Blair Blvd, so we enjoy the best of urban life while still retaining privacy. The studio has its own courtyard with a bistro table and chairs on the deck, where you can relax, surrounded by a profusion of greenery and color.
The Whiteaker, long famous as an artistic and free-spirited enclave, is home to many beloved Eugene institutions such as Sam Bond’s Garage (music venue and pub), Sweet Life Patisserie, Fisherman’s Market, New Day Bakery, and Red Barn organic grocery. Recently it’s attracted attention as a fast-growing commercial district and magnet for hip, new eateries including Tacovore, the Pizza Research Institute, Izakaya Meiji (mostly Japanese but mainly focusing on small plates of various types), Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen, the new, serious foodie restaurant Grit, and many other new locales. Eugene's emerging brewery district is also here, anchored by Ninkasi and now joined by other craft brewers Oakshire, Hop Valley, and Falling Sky. All these are within easy walking distance.
If you stay in the Whit, you’ll be charmed and entertained – and you may not need to get into a car during your entire visit. The area is very walk and bike friendly – in fact, 5th Ave is a biking route. Straight down 5th a few blocks east toward downtown is the toney 5th St. Public Market with more popular shops and eateries. The neighborhood is about five minutes drive to downtown and 10 minutes from the U of O on Eugene’s eastern flank, each also easily accessible via bike. In addition, Eugene’s famous river-bike path is just four blocks away.
Be aware, however, that urban neighborhoods can get noisy. While the house is isolated from the daily foot and street traffic on Blair Blvd., we are close to a park that is an occasional venue for private or public parties. The vast majority of the time, however, it's quiet and peaceful here. We think you'll enjoy it.
Interaction with Guests
We completely respect our guests' privacy, so any interaction we have is up to you. We are happy to share any information about the area or spend time getting to know you -- or, we may not see you at all. You have your own private entrance on a side of the house that we seldom use, so we won't notice your comings and goings. Just make yourself at home, and drop in if you wish.
Very walk and bike-friendly neighborhood. Served by bus lines 52 and 40 with stops a block away.
No smoking inside or outside, and no pets, please.
Your private entrance: the back gate leading to the Studio, visible straight ahead with the white door.
What a great weekend and Airbnb experience. Shelley and Kent have perfected the art of hosting. The cottage key was available to us with a lock box so we did not have to worry about coordinating exact timing. We were provided complete privacy. The cottage was just as described. Clean, tidy, the air conditioner cooling when we arrived. Coffee, hard boiled eggs, pastries for breakfast. They left the light on for us when we came home late. A neighborhood map waiting for us to find our way around to local markets, restaurants and attractions.
WOW! We loved the Whiteaker Studio under the Roses for so many reasons. Shelley & Kent are so quick to respond to inquiries, which immediately let us know how engaged and conscientious they are as hosts. They have done a wonderful job creating a lovely place to stay with so many great amenities. They thought of everything to make travelers feel welcomed - local coffee & beer, pastries, tasty breakfast items, bottled water, gorgeous smelling bath products, Apple TV. They provided a super helpful map of the area, and their recommendations of places to go were stellar. They have an outstanding bookshelf which we enjoyed perusing. The little courtyard is adorable and full of sweet plants and a gorgeous Buddha statue - we loved hanging out there. The Whiteaker neighborhood is so cool and in walking distance to many fun things. Highly recommend!!
This place was perfect. Shelley was great. We had a private room not attached to their house. It was clean and filled with all kinds of incidentals you might need. Coffee, muffins, hair dryer, soap, etc... We were given our privacy the entire time. The location is excellent as there are a ton of great restaurants all walking distance. Their back yard is beautiful too. Shelley was especially helpful with helping us plot out a route via maps, and recommended a great rooftop restaurant in McMinneville.
Shelley and Kent were very welcoming and friendly even though we only crossed paths once on our way to exploring the neighborhood. The studio was clean and stocked with waters, coffee, a map showing things to do in the area, and a couple IPAs from a local brewery. Everything was as shown in the pictures, and nicer. Would definitely stay here again if traveling to or through Eugene.
This place was very nice and comfortable. Conveniently located within walking distance to bars and restaurants. The hosts were very nice.
The listing was very accurate. The neighborhood was quiet; the cottage was lovely and well-appointed. The hosts left a marvelous array of food items including a scone that was still warm from the bakery when we arrived!
Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone; hope to return one day.

About the Host, Shelley And Kent
I'm a tech writer for a local software company, and Kent's a (semi) retired and current adjunct professor at OSU. I love gardening and recently finished the Master Gardener program here in Eugene. Kent's an avid cyclist and involved in the local biking community. Together, we share a passion for boating and whenever we can, we're on, in, or near the water.
We moved to the Whiteaker in 2006 and love this neighborhood. We hope our guests will enjoy our home as much as we do.
