This is a studio next to our house, also available for rent (at times when we are out of town), Cozy Craftsman in the Whiteaker.
The studio is a warm sunny space fronting the courtyard, its front door shaded by a massive Cecile Brunner rose. It includes a queen bed and a seating area by the window, with a private bathroom and a small semi-kitchenette ( frig, coffee pot, microwave, toaster, electric kettle and necessary dishes/glasses/flatware, etc.) We'll leave you some breakfast snacks in the frig and some local Allann Brothers coffee. (A note on the bed: to be perfectly precise in the description here, we identified this as a futon rather than a regular bed. It does not, however, have the standard futon cotton mattress -- rather, it's a foam/cotton combo with a pillow top and an additional memory foam on top.)
You can rent this space alone, or for larger groups, along with the main house, if available.
About our location: We're on quiet 5th Avenue, but only a block away from the Whiteaker’s commercial district at Blair Blvd, so we enjoy the best of urban life while still retaining privacy. We have a large backyard where you can dine outdoors surrounded by espaliered fruit trees, roses, and a profusion of greenery and color.
The Whiteaker, long famous as an artistic and free-spirited enclave, is home to many beloved Eugene institutions such as Sam Bond’s Garage (music venue and pub), Sweet Life Patisserie, Fisherman’s Market, New Day Bakery, and Red Barn organic grocery. Recently it’s attracted attention as a fast-growing commercial district and magnet for hip, new eateries including the Pizza Research Institute, Izakaya Meiji (mostly Japanese but mainly focusing on small plates of various types), Papa’s Soul Food Kitchen, the tiny sushi spot Mame, the new, fabulous Grit restaurant, and many other new locales. Eugene's emerging brewery district is also here, anchored by Ninkasi and now joined by other craft brewers Oakshire, Hop Valley, and Falling Sky. All these are within easy walking distance.
If you stay in the Whit, you’ll be charmed and entertained – and you may not need to get into a car during your entire visit. The area is very walk and bike friendly – in fact, 5th Ave is a biking route. Straight down 5th a few blocks east toward downtown is the toney 5th St. Public Market with more popular shops and eateries. The neighborhood is about five minutes drive to downtown and 10 minutes from the U of O on Eugene’s eastern flank, each also easily accessible via bike. In addition, Eugene’s famous river-bike path is just four blocks away.
Be aware, however, that urban neighborhoods can get noisy. While the house is isolated from the daily foot and street traffic on Blair Blvd., we are close to a park that is an occasional venue for private or public parties. The vast majority of the time, however, it's quiet and peaceful here. We think you'll enjoy it.
We completely respect our guests' privacy, so any interaction we have is up to you. We are happy to share any information about the area or spend time getting to know you -- or, we may not see you at all. You have your own private entrance on a side of the house that we seldom use, so we won't notice your comings and goings. Just make yourself at home, and drop in if you wish.
Very walk and bike-friendly neighborhood. Served by bus lines 52 and 40 with stops a block away.
Shelley and Kent were great hosts. The place was just like it was pictured and described. Nice little touches: fresh water in filter, English muffins, coffee machine, etc. The hosts were great to stay in touch with us via text to make sure all was good and working. Added bonus, a very short walk to co-op market, Pizza Research Institute, an awesome NY Deli, bakery, etc. We would definitely stay again our next visit.
This little cottage is so cozy and inviting! The bed was very comfortable, there were plenty of pillows, extra sheets, blankets, and so many books to read! The cottage has an Asian theme and is nestled in the back of their property and has a window that looks out into an extremely inviting seating area. I can't wait to see what it looks like in the summer when it isn't raining!
This property is located in the Whitaker district which has become quite the happening mixed use neighborhood in the past 5 or so years. So much to do in Eugene.
The cottage was extremely clean, the fridge was stocked with plenty of things to make your morning comfortable, and the shower was plenty hot. Shelley and Kent were extremely kind and gracious and had we not been driving since 3am we would have loved to spent some time with them and chatted. The cottage was so warm and cozy and we slept like babies.
I am in love and we will be staying here again for sure. I would rate this a 10 out of 10. Perfect!
My husband and I stayed at the Whiteaker Studio under the Roses for a week while on a temporary work assignment. We really enjoyed our stay!
Shelley and Kent are great hosts. We enjoyed getting to know them over beers at nearby Oakshire Brewery. Shelley surprised us with nice breakfast treats throughout the week. This was a big help when we needed to get out early in the morning. She even supplied coffee beans and a grinder so we could make delicious coffee every day.
The studio is warm, cozy.and very clean. It is nicely decorated and the entrance is on a pleasant courtyard. It includes a nice new bathroom with a roomy shower. The bed was very comfortable.
This place is located within walking distance of several great breweries and restaurants. We had fun trying a new place every night.
I would definitely stay here again!
So very understanding and helpful. Prompt as well. Huge advocate for Shelley and Kent as human beings, and proud to now live in the same lovely state of Oregon. Thanks guys!
This little retreat cottage is as far away from a hotel room as you could get — and the best Airbnb has to offer. Though we only stayed one night, it’s a place we could imagine staying for a longer trip. We really appreciated the breakfast items as we were hitting the road early. Thanks Shelley & Kent for such a quick & easy transaction!
While my plans changed and I was unable to stay with Shelley and Kent I can say that their communication was fantastic and prompt. The weather in Eugene the weekend of my visit was horrible with snow and freezing rain. Shelley and Kent were very friendly in our communications and were ready for us at whatever time we could have made it. I will definitely be staying with them in the future. I would have absolutely no apprehension about booking a reservation with them at any time!
Thank you Shelley- the helping knock layers of ice off the car was above and beyond!!! You are a very thoughtful host.
My husband and I were caught in a winter storm and had to cancel our earlier plans and rush to Eugene in hopes of getting home via I-5 in the morning... Shelley and Kent not only let us show up much earlier than expected (and the space was WONDERFUL, especially after driving through snow and ice!), they offered to let us stay late if we needed to, and checked up on us regularly on our way in and after our departure to make sure we were safe. The studio was absolutely lovely, warm even though it was VERY cold outside, with a full complement of dishes, appliances, and snacks to keep us going through our stay. Walking distance-- even in snow-- to wonderful restaurants, very comfortable bed, attractive decor, and hundreds of books to keep us occupied!
We loved our stay and hope to return again!
You will find Shelley & Kent to be kind and gracious hosts. Their response to my inquiries was prompt & the prearrival information they provided was thorough. The studio is private & very comfortable. Shelley stocks the fridge with specialties every day to get you started, along with the local coffee. The Whiteaker District is a great place to explore & everything is within walking distance of the studio---breweries, restaurants, and one of the best patisseries this side of Paris! I thoroughly enjoyed my week at the studio & look forward to bringing my wife along on a return trip someday soon.
Very cozy little house in great neighborhood. We walked to brew pub and dinner. Communication with Shelley was great, and the tea and yogurt was a nice morning holdover to breakfast. Thanks for a great stay!!
