About this listing
Come stay in our 100-year old Victorian, fully renovated for modern efficiency & a low carbon footprint, with lots of character and a bit of steampunk flare. Private room on the third floor with shared bath with our other airbnb listing.
During your stay, you are sharing the house with us, the owners - this is not a separate apartment.
This quiet private bedroom accommodates one on a daybed with memory foam mattress. Lots of natural light.
Your third floor bathroom includes the original clawfoot bathtub, with shower fixtures. You will be sharing the bathroom with any other Air BnB guests - the family has a private bathroom on the second floor, so does not use the third floor.
Wireless high speed internet is throughout the house and free.
Our house was occupied by families and artists, students and punk rockers, before we bought it a few years ago, and we keep this happy legacy going. (The mural in the stairwell was painted by previous tenants.) The first floor of the house is inspired by the ship Serenity in the series "Firefly".
We renovated our house to be as energy efficient as is possible in a retrofit. It is well insulated with modern windows throughout. We compost, recycle, and have a solar array that generates most of the house electricity. The rest is purchased from The Energy Co-op a cooperative supplier of electricity from renewable resources, mostly wind.
Please free to hang out on the first floor where you can borrow a book, movie, or some board games. You are welcome to relax in the hammock on the front porch, or at the bench/picnic table in the back patio, under our grape vines and a beautiful locust tree.
The modern kitchen is shared with us. Please check with us if you are planning on cooking a big meal so that we don't have too many cooks in the kitchen. We keep coffee and tea well-stocked for our guests!
Interaction with Guests
We are a family of four, and are native and near-native Philadelphians. We will be happy to help with directions, any questions you might have, and suggestions for outings, including off-the-beaten path. Our neighborhood, West Philadelphia / University City, has lots to offer, but the rest of Philadelphia is in easy reach through the public transportation system.
We are a working family with young kids. You are welcome to come and go on your own schedule - we are usually deep sleepers, but please respect that quiet hours - 9pm through 7am.
A subway station and major bus routes are nearby, and can get you to downtown Philadelphia in 10 minutes. The house is also in easy walking distance of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the University of the Sciences. Grocery stores, entertainment, coffee shops, recreation activities / spaces, live theater, restaurants, food co-op, and Clark Park are also very close-by - no need to even use a car. There is convenient street parking and we have indoor bicycle storage.
We are a few blocks to the Market Frankford (Blue) line 46th street station it is a 5 min walk from our house. The 34 trolley is also a few block south from our house and is a pleasant walk. There are bus lines on Spruce and Walnut and Chestnut that can quickly take you to and from Center City. We often just use (website hidden) maps for directions it is pretty accurate for Public transit.
Other Things to Note
We have some very friendly cats. They are not allowed in the guest rooms, unless you want them to be.
We are very easy-going, but past hosting experience has taught us there are a few things we have to be really clear on, so please read the below.
We are a NO SHOES house. You can leave your shoes by the front door or keep them in your room, but please do not wear shoes in the house.
Our house is "fragrance free" - no perfume/cologne/scented oils. They linger in our house long after you have left. Scented shampoo and soap are not a problem.
Please no candles or incense.
You are welcome to use our kitchen during your stay. Please label anything you put in the fridge.
Feel free to use microwave, toaster oven, and stove for tea and french press.
We are vegetarian; you do not have to be. Please do not plan on cooking meat in our house.
During your stay, please respect that the second floor is the bedrooms of our family. We have two children.
Our home is an old house. If you are coming and going during quiet hours, that is no problem, but please remember that our bedrooms are right below you.
No smoking anywhere inside or around the house.
The house of Terrence and his family is really great place to stay in Philly. They are very nice and lovely people, helpfull with everything. I arrived during the night and even that was not a problem for them. The room was prepared, very clean, with comfortable bed. You can feel the atmosphere of artists who lived there before - something you cannot feel while staying in a hotel. I can strongly recommend this original place.
I stayed this place for 12 days. Terrence’s place was perfect for me. Clean, comfortable, strong wifi, and close to Penn. Terrence and his family are wonderful hosts.
I stayed Terrence's place again! It was the third time! :) great place!
I had a great stay at Terrence's. We didn't cross paths a lot as I was out and about but he was very friendly and helpful and I felt totally comfortable. The house itself is lovely, the surrounding neighbourhood was great and was easy to navigate. I'd happily recommend staying here to other Air BnB users.
For any students out there who need to take Step 2 CS, this is a perfect location! I could not have asked for a better host. Terrence and his family were so welcoming. They were happy to point out the best places to shop, and eat, and were more than happy to share their stories and spend meal time with me. The room was clean and private. More than anything, Terrence and his family are kind, genuine people and it was a pleasure to get to know them.
Terence's place was great - clean, comfortable, and an easy walk to UPENN. Everything you need is close by, and Terrence was really helpful with parking and directions advice, and knowing the lay of the land in West Philly. I recommend this stay without hesitation!
There could not be a better first experience with AirBNB than with a host like Terrance. Once the booking was finalized, he made sure to stay in touch with me to ensure he was fully aware of my arrival schedule and vice versa, so that we could shake hands upon my arrival. He gave me a thorough tour of his home and made sure to make me feel welcome. Frankly, the post and images undermines how lovely this home is and how well accommodated any guest that stays here will be! The bedroom is spacious and tremendously comfortable, the bathroom is clean, and the kitchen well stocked and easy to navigate. The location of this home is not spoken about nearly enough! The neighborhood is beautiful and full of character, and puts you in close range to plenty of walkable and cabable locations. Terrance himself is very warm and it felt as though I was staying with family. You cant go wrong staying at this location.

About the Host, Terrence
I'm a native of Philadelphia, and have lived in my current neighborhood for 15 years. I really enjoy hosting airbnb guests and can offer good tips on where to eat and the best way to get around the city. A number of our guests have stayed with us while moving to Philadelphia and searching for an apartment. We can offer advice on getting established in the city and the best places to look for good deals on apartments.
A little more about myself, I'm an electrical engineer and materials scientist, I enjoy creating and building new things. I'm a fan of sustainable design and lifestyles. I'm currently building a nanotechnology instrumentation startup and finishing my Ph.D. in materials science and engineering.
