Come stay in our 100-year old Victorian, fully renovated for modern efficiency & a low carbon footprint, with lots of character and a bit of steampunk flare. Private room on the third floor with shared bath with our other airbnb listing.
Close to UPenn, Drexel, etc. Easy access to public transportation - downtown in 10 minutes! Kids welcome!
You can rent this bedroom (sleeps 1) or both bedrooms (sleeps 3). Look at my profile to see the other listing. Please inquire for pricing for the entire third floor rental. There is no extra charge for additional guests.
During your stay, you are sharing the house with us, the owners - this is not a separate apartment.
This quiet private bedroom accommodates one on a daybed with memory foam mattress. If you rent the entire third floor, this room can be used for additional sleeping space or your own "living room" during your stay.
Your third floor bathroom includes the original clawfoot bathtub, with shower fixtures.
Wireless high speed internet is throughout the house and included in the rental price.
Please free to hang out on the first floor where you can borrow a book, movie, or some board games. You are welcome to relax in the hammock on the front porch, or at the bench/picnic table in the back patio, under our grape vines and a beautiful locust tree.
Traveling with kids? No need to bring toys - our kids have plenty to share.
The modern kitchen is shared with us. Please check with us if you are planning on cooking a big meal so that we don't have too many cooks in the kitchen.
Our house was occupied by families and artists, students and punk rockers, before we bought it a few years ago, and we keep this happy legacy going. (The mural in the stairwell was painted by previous tenants.) The first floor of the house is inspired by the ship Serenity in the series "Firefly".
We renovated our house to be as energy efficient as is possible in a retrofit. It is well insulated with modern windows throughout. We compost, recycle, and have a solar array that generates most of the house electricity. The rest is purchased from The Energy Co-op a cooperative supplier of electricity from renewable resources, mostly wind.
A subway station and major bus routes are nearby, and can get you to downtown Philadelphia in 10 minutes. The house is also in easy walking distance of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the University of the Sciences. Grocery stores, entertainment, coffee shops, recreation activities / spaces, live theater, restaurants, (email hidden)-op, and Clark Park are also very close-by - no need to even use a car! There is convenient street parking and we have indoor bicycle storage.
Interaction with Guests
We are a family of four, and are native and near-native Philadelphians. We will be happy to help with directions, any questions you might have, and suggestions for outings, including off-the-beaten path. Our neighborhood, West Philadelphia / University City, has lots to offer, but the rest of Philadelphia is in easy reach through the public transportation system.
We are a working family with young kids. You are welcome to come and go on your own schedule - we are usually deep sleepers, but please respect that quiet hours are necessary for our health & sanity - 9pm through 7am. (Exception for babies.)
We are a few blocks to the Market Frankford (Blue) line 46th street station it is a 5 min walk from our house. The 34 trolley is also a few block south from our house and is a pleasant walk. There are bus lines on Spruce and Walnut and Chestnut that can quickly take you to and from Center City. We often just use (website hidden) maps for directions it is pretty accurate for Public transit.
Other Things to Note
We have some very friendly cats. They are not allowed in the guest rooms, unless you want them to be.
We are very easy-going, but past hosting experience has taught us there are a few things we have to be really clear on, so please read the below.
We are a NO SHOES house. You can leave your shoes by the front door or keep them in your room, but please do not wear shoes in the house.
Our house is "fragrance free" - no perfume/cologne/scented oils. They linger in our house long after you have left. Scented shampoo and soap are not a problem.
Please no candles or incense.
You are welcome to use our kitchen during your stay. Please label anything you put in the fridge.
Feel free to use microwave, toaster oven, and stove for tea and french press.
We are vegetarian; you do not have to be. Please do not plan on cooking meat in our house.
During your stay, please respect that the second floor is the bedrooms of our family. We have two children.
Our home is an old house. There is no sound proofing between the floors. If you are coming and going during quiet hours, that is no problem, but please remember that our bedrooms are right below you - sound penetrates straight into our bedrooms.
No smoking anywhere inside or around the house.
I have lived for 10 days by Terrence's family. They are all nice!
Communication before and during my stay has been always accurate but I have had my own space and when I was tired I did not feel as I had to speak with them.
The room is very clean and cozy and the bathroom as well (with everything you need: towels, soaps...).
The matress is so comfortable! During the night is quiet and I could sleep good!
The third floor of the house is only for guests but actually it was only me in that period so I had no problem with shared bathroom.
It's not a new house and the old wood stairs make noise but you have just to get used to it! If you walk slowly you do not disturb anyone! But overall the house is well maintained and you feel its vibrant atmosphere.
Especially if your purpose is a visiting period at UPenn I suggest to stay here, because you can reach it easily by foot.
Overall my experience has been very good and I totally recommended it! Thanks!
Clean, comfortable room in a fantastic neighborhood. Thank you for your hospitality!
Very friendly family. The bed is comfortable and the room nicely heated. I was able to come and go as I please.
We were greeted by Terence's daughter, shown to our room and greeted warmly. The room was private and the bathroom conveniently located down the hall. The neighborhood boasted some comfy breakfast cafes filled with a diverse crowd and yummy treats. Our visit was in the winter and the walk from the metro stop to the house was a quick one. Traveling alone with a child I was a bit uncomfortable walking from the transit, but became more comfortable once I found our way clearly. The house itself was cheerful and warm and I would definitely recommend this B&B.
Terence and Amy were extremely helpful suggesting places to eat and transportation options. The family home is filled with laughter and health. We felt like we fit in well and asked for what we needed. A fun trip. Interesting neighborhood near the university (a great walk!).
Terrence and Amy really made sure that I was as comfortable as possible. They did not force conversations on me, which I really appreciate since I do enjoy my private time a lot. Nevertheless, they gave me all the guidance that I need to enjoy Philly. Since I was staying around Christmas time, they even invited me to a movie night with the whole family, which was quite considerate of them.
Joe and Calyx, their children, are very pleasant and interesting kids. I could not imagine any guest staying at Terrence's not liking the children.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay at Terrence's and will definitely recommend to my friends who might visit Philly in the future :)
A wonderful experience as always. Very clean and respectful of your privacy. Terrence and Amy are attentive hosts and fine accommodations. This is an easy walk to Penn with nearby restaurants and cafes.

I'm a native of Philadelphia, and have lived in my current neighborhood for 15 years. I really enjoy hosting airbnb guests and can offer good tips on where to eat and the best way to get around the city. A number of our guests have stayed with us while moving to Philadelphia and searching for an apartment. We can offer advice on getting established in the city and the best places to look for good deals on apartments.
A little more about myself, I'm an electrical engineer and materials scientist, I enjoy creating and building new things. I'm a fan of sustainable design and lifestyles. I'm currently building a nanotechnology instrumentation startup and finishing my Ph.D. in materials science and engineering. My partner and my two kids are great hosts too, and are always working on interesting projects.
