  • We really enjoyed our stay at Ajah's home. The room was perfectly comfortable and it was a quick walk to everything in the Bywater. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to make this neighborhood their homebase while visiting New Orleans. Thanks for the hospitality!

  • Ajah is a lovely, welcoming host with great local advice. The room is simply done and has everything you need. It is not a fancy place, it is not a hotel. It is a wonderful, creaky, characterful shotgun house which means you go through a bedroom to get to the bathroom - and go through another bedroom to get to the kitchen. But this is not an issue if you are up for experiencing this traditional New Orleans way of living.

There was a brief problem with the lock and Ajah immediately came and sorted it out. Can't wait to come back! x

  • Good place to stay during your visit to new orleans. Ajah is a great host and the room was spacious, clean and with city maps.

  • We had a great experience staying with Ajah and RC in the Bywater! Their place was very conveniently located: 15 minute walk to Frenchmen St., 20 minute walk to the French Quarter, 2 blocks north of St-Claude where you can easily find cabs and public transport, and incredibly close to many of the adorable and trendy restaurants in the Bywater/Marigny neighbourhood (Elizabeth's, Satsuma, Bacchanal, Cake Cafe, Country Club, etc.). Ajah made it clear to us before booking that the house was a traditional New Orleans shotgun style home (you have to walk through one room to get to the next). This wasn't much of an issue for us since the room is at the front of the house, so we only needed to go through RC's bedroom to get to the bathroom and he was barely ever there (though you'll also have to go through Ajah's room to get to the kitchen if you intend on using it). Ajah and RC are also very accommodating, so if you don't want them going through your room to get to theirs, they will enter through the back.

The room itself was clean and comfortable. It was very chilly outside when we were there, but they provided us with a space heater and extra duvets. They also provided us with locking cabinets. The neighbourhood was very quiet, though the walls in the room were not very well insulated so light sleepers may be awoken by cars driving by, passing trains (the tracks are nearby), or people talking outside.

Other points of note: (1) There is no WiFi (though it is very easy to find free WiFi in the city). (2) Their dog Creature is absolutely adorable and friendly, and I don't think we heard him bark once in four days. (3) We walked north to St Roch cemetery one day but we realized fairly quickly that this area wasn't very safe. We always felt secure at Ajah and RC's and in the area south of there, but if you book with them I would not recommend walking north!

Thank you very much Ajah and RC! We appreciated having the opportunity to stay in a traditional New Orleans style home :)

  • We had a great stay at Ajah and RC's, they were gracious hosts, non intrusive, but available. The house is in the New Orleans shotgun style, which means that the rooms are connected and you have to go through other people's bedrooms. Their dog, Creature, is the sweetest thing and very quiet. The neighborhood is pretty run down, but we never felt unsafe. Beware of potholes on the streets, make sure you drive VERY slowly!

  • It was really great to get a taste for New Orleans life in this Bywater house with Ajah and RC. They were both really helpful, friendly and accommodating, and were always up for a good yarn.
The house is a shotgun house, so be prepared for people to occasionally need to walk through to get in and out. I was used to it after one night - it wasn't an issue.
The neighbourhood seems a bit rough with a few abandoned houses in the neighbourhood, but it was totally safe in my experience and in the experiences of the housemates living there.
Walking distance to Frenchman and the French quarter was awesome. I had a really great time in New Orleans.

  • Ajah was really nice and the place was great. Nice room and she put the heater on before we came so it was nice and cozy. Cute dog too. Its a wee bit out of the way from the fun stuff in the Marigny/Bywater area, but not too bad. The kitchen lacked a few basic things like a tea kettle (as far as we could tell).

  • Enjoyed my stay. It is very convenient to the Quarter about a 20 minute walk through non-sketchy neighborhoods. The area immediately around the house looks a little rough but where doesn't in NOLA and everything was fine. Room is as pictured and is the front room of a classic shotgun style home.

  • I had a wonderful stay in the Bywater. I love the Bywater neighborhood and the people in the Bywater. Ajah was a great host. I came into town very late (11pm or midnight). Ajah was still up waiting for me. She orientated me to her traditional shotgun style house and let me know that she would be around if I needed her. The bed was very comfortable and there were plenty of comforters and a heater for the unusually cold nights. Ajah encouraged me to go out and told me about different things that were going on while I was there. She has a roommate that is a local musician. I would have loved to go hear him play, but my plans dictated that I spent my time doing other things. She knows everyone in her neighborhood and I felt completely comfortable as a single female coming and going in the neighborhood. I would definitely stay again if my plans warrant the opportunity.

  • Had a great stay. The room was clean and well arranged, just as pictured, and we were made to feel welcome. I do think it's worth mentioning that, being north of St. Claude, the home is technically not in the Bywater. The neighborhood has more vacant and damaged property than that south of St. Claude.

About
I've been visiting New Orleans for years and finally decided to make it my permanent home a few months ago. My wonderful housemate Robert is an old friend and one of the reasons i decided to relocate from the west coast. We are both musicians, you can find Robert playing with his band The Hokum Highrollers down on Royal St. everyday! We love to share stories and drink coffee at our neighborhood coffee shop, stay in and watch movies with our lovely neighbors, bike around town taking in the city and spend time working in our beautiful backyard. I have a dog who wants to be friends with everyone! We both love New Orleans and couldn't imagine living anywhere else in the world!
