Suite for two (with a private terrace with the best views over the medina) located in an old house in the Chaoueni medina.
You can enjoy Chaouen authenticity in a very quiet street, that will make you rest and sleep without noises.
The house has been renovated following the traditional architectural style. We have try to decorate it in a simply way, suitable to the environment, but with all the elements that make a house to be comfortable. The suite has one double room, sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and a private terrace with an astonishing view over the medina and the mountains around Chaouen.
We think that good sleeping is the first requirement that our clients will make us, for this reason our beds have the best mattress of the offer, with two different pillows (more and less thick); feather duvets to fight against the cold winter nights and 100% cotton bed linen and in summer time the covers are made of Hayeks (typical pieces of white cotton material that women used to wear in Northern Morocco).
The kitchenettes are good to prepare breakfasts or even light meals, with gas cooker and electric oven and the most important kitchen tools.
Mohamed, the manager, can help you whatever you may need.
Interaction with Guests
The person who get in touch with guests once in Chaouen is Mohamed el Mamouni. He is a very nice and helpful person, and moreover, just in case you may need, he is a nurse.
If the guest likes a total independence, Mohamed will not disturb, but his telephone number is always on.
We wish to offer to the independent, sensitive and cultured traveller a kaleidoscope of authentic experiences inside the heart of a traditional Chaouen neighbourhood. Chaouen has a sweet light, but a harsh climate, with cold nights and wet buildings. We must advice this, though our apartments are prepared to fight against these eventualities (feather duvets, plenty hot water, dehumidifier, heaters and also fire-place in the two bedrooms apartment).
Other Things to Note
Dar el Moualim is not a usual business, but a local development project, which provides two direct jobs and that promotes the protection of the medina, which is suffering too many inappropriate restorations. The house renovation has tried to be as much orthodox as possible, following the tradition in the facades, and in the inner decoration and furniture, but introducing some comforts to improve the stay and the rest of the guests. During spring season the suite is furnished with air-conditioning equipment.
The Chaouen medina has big slopes, and to reach our apartments we have to climb a narrow street with steps (about 50 m) as many others in the medina. This small effort will bring us the award of peaceful nights and astonishing views from the private terrace of the suite. Dar el Moualim and its environment is a window to a different world and our best wish is to show it to sensitive travellers. For this reason, if you really wish to be hosted in Dar el Moualim you should remember our proposal and decide if Dar el Moualim suits to your interest. We firmly ask to those tourists not very sensitive to the culture and the heritage, and also those who depend of high level of consumerism and comfort not to book with us. We recommend our lodgement to independent travellers, with some knowledge about Morocco and Chefchaouen, with no physical impediments to step up to Dar el Moualim, which is done in about 10 minutes from the closest parking area.
Beautiful apartment with many cute Moroccan details, in an excellent location. Booking was super easy and Paquita was very responsive and helpful. Chefchauen is really picturesque (bluer than the photos!) and on the terrace you have the most amazing view over the town and to the mountains!
The internet in the apartment worked really well, shower was great (good water pressure) and everything was very clean and tidy for our arrival, along with fresh towels left out, toilet roll, soap, etc.
In this apartment there is, unfortunately due to the bad drainage system in the town, a smell in the bathroom and kitchen area, which we overcame by using incense sticks. Also, due to the lack of infrastructure in the town, there's no mains gas, so the kitchen comes with a small twin-camping stove (& not so much cutlery) so don't expect to do so much cooking inside.
Mohamed met us at the bus station and arrived promptly after calling him. We were then driven to the main square at the entrance to the many Chefchaouen small alleyways and escorted up the hill to to the Apartment. Do not attempt this by yourself, as you'd never find the apartment unless shown!
All in all we would recommend the apartment due to it's many positive points and our host, Paquita, was just great!
The apartment was very hard to find (but that's a given in the magnificent blue medina) - we were to contact Mohammed who was went to meet us but this proved to be very difficult. Luckily the neighbours were friendly and showed us were to go. Once inside we quickly realised that the apartment was a little unloved or hadn't been used in a long time (or so I hope - the floors were dirty, the bed smelled and was damp and the top blanket and large cushions were filled with dust). All the dishes had to be re-washed before use as they also looked unused for a long time. The lamps in the bedroom were be eaten by mould. The Internet didn't work (something I think that hasn't been fixed since months according to other reviews) and on the last day the electricity wasn't working. The view from the balcony was amazing but for the same price as a hotel with staff, cleanliness and wifi I would choose the later. And as other reviews have warned the bathroom did have an odour! Also note the hot water only lasts about 10 minutes.
We really try to improve the things that are not working properly.
The apartment is very difficult to find as it is said in the information provided, and for this reason I inform everybody to call Mohamed. Some pepole do not like to spend money with an international call but there are public telephones which are not expensive. So you shouldn't go alone to the house as I informed you. You were told that Mohamed will help you whatever you may need and you did not call him for anything, so one may think that everything was working right until reading your, to my impression, not very fair evaluation. About the smell you only had to open the water during some minutes and the smell dissapears. It is due to the bad conditions of the dirty waters in Chaouen. We have tried to mend it but it is not possible, but as I've said only with some minutes of clean water it disappears. About the dishes I was cheking last week the apartment and I do not agree with you, but I will check it again to be completly sure about it. The suite is a product very special. You would not find, I'm sure at all, any hotel room with the private terrace you enjoy in Dar el Moualim suite, the bed in Dar el Moualim, and even with Egiptian cotton as bedlinen, at least you would pay more than 1000 dirhams. About wifi Maroc Telecom is still mending it because the problem is in the street and not inside the house and I hope today or tomorrow it will be working again. Internet tecnology for home is only provided by Maroc Telecom and it is not working as everybody would like it, but we have no choice. But of course, you do not have to know about anything of this, but you either do not ask previously to your comment anything.
Our overall experience was positive, but the apartment was a mixed bag. On the positive side, the suite has a private rooftop balcony with the most stunning view we could have gotten of the city below. The apartment is really well-located (totally worth the stairs, which you'll get in any part of Chef), and the suite has plenty of space and privacy.
There were some drawbacks, too, that made the stay less ideal than it could have been. Echoing other reviews, we had serious trouble communicating with the manager, Mohammed, when arriving to Chef. He was difficult to reach, unclear in his communication, and seemed rushed and impolite when he finally came to meet us. The bathroom - though big and beautiful - had a strange smell, not aided by a tricky toilet. The hot water is shared with the other apartments, so we were unable to take a hot shower our first morning. Last, the internet also went our last day and was not fixed before we left.
These were small issues, but added up to be kind of a headache. Still, it's hard to imagine a better location with a more beautiful and private terrace.
Thanks for your opinion, intended to be equilibrated. About the smell in the barthroom: in Chaouen medina there is a problem with the waste water, as sometimes some bad smell comes from the street and also to the bathrooms in the houses. Nothing that cannot be mended by leaving the fresh water run some minutes in the shower. About the hot water system in the house is very fast to recover the high temperature, as we inform in a piece of paper hanged on the noticeboard on each apartment, just in ten minutes there is again hot water.
About Mohamed behaviour, I offered your money back if you did not want to stay at Dar el Moualim, when you had so bad impression about him. I explained you that Mohamed is not an agresive person but on the contrary, he is very sweet and helpfull with the guests. He has a very hight standard in Chefchaouen as to be a very good person and everybody respects him as he also acts as a voluntary with the poor people in the village. That is to show that he has a high soul and goodness. Anyway, as everybody he also has bad days. The problem was that you misunderstood the Moroccan gesture with agressivity and rudness due to the inexperience of the Arabic culture. Anyway, I have talked Mohamed just to explain him about the expetation of some guests and to improve his behaviour toward the guests.
Nice place, good location. To bad the manager didn't speak English and the sewer smelled.
Fantastic apartment and location, we absolutely loved our time here. Unfortunately our arrival was extremely difficult with no one waiting at the bus station as had been requested and no one at the apartment when we finally got there. Thankfully some lovely neighbors took us in for an hour while others tracked Mohammed down. But it was a very stressful arrival
Francisca's apartment was perfect for us. Everything that we needed, ideally located with a private rooftop terrace to truly experience the beauty and charisma of Chaouen. So much so that we couldn't leave and stayed on for week. Francisca was extremely helpful with Mohammad on hand whenever we needed anything. Highly recommended
