The Sanctuary is self-contained, cozy apartment in a repurposed church. Antique furniture, stained glass windows and chandeliers live amongst the full bookcases. You can enjoy the steeple library or the cozy bar while on your laptop.

The Sanctuary, the Haven, and newly opened Idyll may be rented together, sleeping up to 10 in the three conjoined spaces.

The space
The Sanctuary is entered by passing through the vintage wrought-iron gate and then through the peaceful courtyard where the door to the space awaits.
In the bedroom, the full sized bed has a new memory-foam mattress with luxury linens. The locally-made headboard was created from church pew-ends discovered during renovation. An Oriental rug, Aubusson-inspired bedspread and matched stained-glass windows complete the picture... along with the signature antler chandelier, guest closet, and, of course, just a few books to whet your whistle.
Speaking of that whistle, just across the stairway hall from the bedroom is The Altar Bar where there is a electric griddle, fridge, microwave, toaster oven, electric kettle, crockpot and coffee pot. There's also a small tv, on cable, and Wifi.
The well-appointed bathroom has an Asian motif featuring a wonderful red-lacquered cupboard found in Camp Verde AZ, which complimented the style of a vintage mirror I've owned for many years. You will find care taken in each room to make them comfortable and interesting.
The steeple library room is up one flight of stairs, reached through a narrow stairway that has an authentic, but secretive, vibe. This is a fine spot to enjoy your morning coffee or afternoon tea as it has comfortable cushions and pillows plus an library table to make it easy to peruse those oversized coffee-table books about the Southwest, architecture, fashion, landscape and maybe even Shakespeare.
The cushioned bench in the steeple library can become an extra-long twin bed UPON REQUEST. The bed would suit a third person or provide a sleeping place for a guest who needs his or her own bed. PLEASE REMEMBER TO REQUEST if you need this bed as it is made up by staff. (No charge.) Thanks!
We periodically update and refresh the furniture and appointments in each space with unique vintage finds.
Please note that voices & sounds can sometimes transfer between apartments. Quiet time is from 10pm to 7am.
The entire Sanctuary space has new heating and air conditioning units, along with access to a charming patio area with a fire pit, used mainly from May through October.

I am a retired business owner who continued to look for another opportunity which is how I found an exciting new life hosting guests in my repurposed church building and bungalow next door. My late husband and I began our lives together in the Chicago suburbs and then lived in Europe with our three children for more than a decade. We moved Tacoma in the eighties, where we began our business. I am interested in history, theater, opera, music, dogs, grandkids, cousins, the environment, travel and food. When I have traveled with my grandkids, we are easy-going, roll-with-the-punches travelers, eager to experience new venues and gather great stories. We don't stay up late except for theater, shows and great restaurants. Quiet and always on the go. Did I mention food? Love ethnic anything. At The Sanctuary, The Haven and Aero, we are seeking guests with inquisitive minds and adventuresome spirits. Join us!

During your stay

Your on-site host purchased, repurposed and fully decorated this unique property so she could live in Northern Arizona. When this unique building came up for sale, the idea of carving out separate spaces and sharing the space with adventurous travelers, was a natural. Your host is also a Airbnb traveler, last in Beverly Hills for a premier of her son’s film and before that in NYC with granddaughter, Liza.
Sondra has a long history with Arizona beginning in 1964 when her parents retired to Prescott and later moved to Sun City. She has been a visitor and a tourist here and is happy making her home in Winslow. She now has the opportunity to seek out even more sights to visit and adventures to share with guests, whether hiking, kayaking, cycling, visiting museums or the many natural wonders in Northeastern Arizona.
Sondra is former business owner, teacher, entrepreneur and non-profit board member. Her interests include theater, opera and literature which are reasons that a main feature of The Sanctuary is the plethora of books in each room for guests to enjoy.
Sondra has travelled to many foreign lands including Cuba, Morocco and China. With her family, she lived in The Netherlands and Germany for 11 years and did extensive camping throughout the continent. COVID has certainly changed the interaction with guests from around the world, but all are heartily welcomed, (masked and socially distanced) and encouraged to spend time in The Sanctuary.
