The Bawden Furnace Schoolhouse circa early 1870's is 3.2 miles to Galena 's restaurants, shopping, art and culture. The rustic ambiance, natural zen-like surroundings, and airy floor plan with wood burning stove, make it easy to relax, unplug and unwind. The schoolhouse is perfect for couples and solo adventurers who are looking for a true escape from today's fast-paced lifestyle. Feel free to explore and enjoy our many acres of prairie and oak savanna restoration, via hiking or snowshoeing!

The space
The cottage is a former one room schoolhouse that served the children of lead miners. The Bawden Furnace was the lead mine in which the adults worked. The stone walls are 2 feet thick, and you will notice this detail in the window sills. The front porch is great for bird watching while sitting in the rockers. We have seen many bald eagles from that vantage point. The side patio is perfect for grilling outside while listening to nature.

Where you’ll be

Galena, Illinois, United States

We are very close to the east fork of the Galena River where many kayaks and canoes launch. This enables visitors to spot the occasional bald eagle and great blue heron. The property has over 30 oak trees, and the terraced garden is influenced by many native perennials which change throughout the seasons. There is also excellent road and gravel biking right out the front door, and additional property behind both homes for walking and snowshoeing.

My husband and I have degrees in physical and mental health. We have a dog, named Sienna. We enjoy music, cycling, hiking, cooking, eating and working outside with our hands. We are non-smokers, health conscious, and like to experience new cultures and cuisines. Nowadays, prefer quiet nights by the fire over wild nightlife. One of my favorite spots in Chicago is the Lurie Garden designed by Piet Oudolf, and The Jazz Showcase. In Galena, I enjoy tending to our prairie, playing piano and percussion, working on our oak savanna restoration, and of course the sounds of nature around me.
