Casa Batsu is an exceptional BnB (and more). It definitely stands out from everything we experienced at Airbnb & others.
Don't expect a noble Hotel but a stress absorbing place where you will be welcome like an old friend. What you can expect is a comfortable and clean room, decorated with a lot of love. The whole stay at Casa Batsu had all these little things that makes you happy.
At the beginning we were a little concerned about our privacy, quickly we found out that this was nothing we had to worry about.
We were lucky enough to catch Carlos, the host, at one of his free nights, so he offered to cook for us.
Since we are vegan & gluten-free, I honestly never thought in my wildest food dreams that something like that will be waiting for us in Costa Rica. The whole dinner was a real pleasure.
My girl and I planned to spend the whole day in the cloud forest, so Carlos kindly prepared a delicious lunchbox for us.
I feel like if we have missed the chance to stay at Casa Batsu, our holidays would not be as complete as it was.
Carlos, his wife and the staff gave their best.
All in all we are glad that we decided to stay with them.
Carlos best host 2015 confirmed. :-)
Casa Batsu and their hosts Carlos and Paola (I hope I get the name right!) are fantastic. They have been incredible hosts and their B&B is a real treat.
The B&B is located a little bit outside of town, but the easiest way to go back and forth between St. Elena and Casa Batsu is by taxi (costs about $2 each way), and there are many good food options in town (besides the dinner option at Casa Batsu, which is excellent!).
The B&B itself is very beautiful with a beautiful garden and a plethora of flowers and plants. There is a deck with a few chairs, a patio for breakfast and to hang around, and very nicely decorated rooms. The rooms were clean, private and very sweetly decorated with flowers upon arrival. We were staying at the Mariposa room, which was very roomy and had a lovely natural stone walled shower.
Carlos was a very kind host and we were treated like new friends. He struck up interesting conversations about politics & culture of Costa Rica over glasses of wine. Carlos helped us to arrange day trips in Monteverde, all of which turned out as real gems. The trips were very interesting and the guides seemed to be very kind and knowledgeable. Carlos and his family made us feel at home and helped us wherever they could; they even helped us when we had a glitch with the Interbus reservations previous to our arrival in Costa Rica.
I could go on about the awesomeness of Casa Batsu, but I will leave it here. You will be in good hands with Carlos and his family. Stay at Casa Batsu, you'll love Monteverde.
This is hands down the best place I've stayed in my AirBnB experience. It's a true BnB where Carlos makes you feel welcome in true Costa Rican style, has as much (or as little) interaction as you'd like and makes you feel completely at home. He shared a glass of wine with my mom, sister and I, talked about Costa Rican culture and politics (with my mother - not as easy feat, but fun nonetheless!) and treated us like we were old friends. He even heated up our leftovers for us.
The grounds are impeccably manicured and beautiful to walk around. Carlos made a reservation for us in a matter of minutes for the Cloud Forest walking tour and zip-lining and the shuttle was there to pick us up right on time. Carlos sells and serves his own coffee and makes a healthy, fresh and beautifully presented breakfast.
We were so sad to leave Monteverde, but we have a feeling we will either see Carlos soon in Costa Rica or New York!
PS You need to be motivated to get to Monteverde! The roads are grueling, but it's beautiful. Next time, I would spend more than a day 1/2!

Carlos (the host) was fantastic. He was by far the best and most welcoming host that we had in our entire trip. From the moment we arrived he made us feel at home. His English was perfect and he spent a lot of time helping us organise activities as well as giving us a background/history about Monteverde and the cloud forest.
Carlos wife was very friendly and generous. The room was fantastic with a garden view, hot shower and cleaned to a very high standard every day. We would like to recommend this property to anyone considering the trip to Monteverde- it's well worth it!
