These are my other listings of PRIVATE hutong houses:
Also, I have other listings with very affordable rent prices for longer term stays (1-3 months). You can find those in my profile, on the left side under "listings".
Short version for those in a hurry:
* It is a private house, studio style loft, very modern and new, inside traditional Chinese courtyard. You get your own space with private toilet/shower, bed (amazing IKEA mattress) and share the yard and kitchen/dining room (separate house) with other guests. It is centrally located in the heart of Beijing, walking distance to many tourist attractions and just between 4 subway lines (and 3 min walk from the airport shuttle bus stop).
Good wifi, free beers, free coffee/tea, free laundry and dryer, fully equipped kitchenette and free breakfast ingredients, super flexible check in/out times and priceless peace and quite in the center of Beijing!
D.Loft is a traditional Chinese courtyard in one of the most central areas in Beijing (walking distance to the Forbidden city, Tienanmen Square, Jingshan park, Ritan). The courtyard was renovated for a few months. While the unique original character of a traditional courtyard house was preserved, the rooms were transformed to provide modern comfort. All rooms have private entrance (and key) but share common yard and kitchen/dining room, each room includes: en-suite bathroom/shower, floor heating, air conditioning, quality IKEA mattress, etc. The house has high ceiling and by building a loft, the living/working area was separated from the sleeping area to provide more privacy and space. Because the room space is relatively small (14sqm/150sqf), a lot of emphasis was put on functionality and minimalism, like building the toilet under the staircase, choice of colors and tailor built furniture.
D.Loft is something between a hotel and home. We will provide you with all the convenience of a hotel such as: clean sheets, slippers, shampoo/body wash, hair dryer, international plugs, maid to clean your room (once-twice a week), advise you on trips and attractions, tips on good restaurants/bars, even help you to book tour guide/driver if needed, and make restaurant reservations, but won't charge you for that ;)
The kitchenette/dining area has fridge, microwave, stove, kettle, dishes, sink and breakfast ingredients (coffee/tea, milk, mineral water, beers, bread, jams etc.) for guests use. There are also phones/sim cards that you can use.
Check in time is flexible in case the room is not booked yet, but if it is booked (or the maid came to clean it) please make sure to check out before noon, you can still leave your luggage at a secure place though.
So if you are looking for an authentic experience, would like to experience Chinese culture and see how the daily life in a Hutong unfolds, you are more than welcome to stay here, and we will try our best to provide you all that you need to make you feel comfortable. BUT, if you are looking for a hotel convenience and ambiance please look further as i wouldn't want not to meet your expectations.
* You will have your own key to the courtyard and your room, so you are very independent.
* The rooms are totally private but the yard and kitchen/dining room are shared to allow mingling with other guests
Interaction with Guests
I will be here to check you in, but how we interact afterwards depends on you. I'm more than happy to chat with my guests over a beer or glass of wine, even taking you out to bars or restaurants. But if you want your privacy, you won't notice I'm there unless you look for me
Location is the biggest attraction of D.Loft, as we are located in the heart of Beijing in a traditional Chinese community (Hutong), which few foreigners get to experience during their visit in China. As it is inside the hutong, far enough from the street and not near any major roads, it is very quiet and tranquil experience rare to find in a metropolitan like Beijing. It is also very safe as all the neighbors know each other and also very friendly with my guests :)
Outside of my place there are many restaurants (that other guest loved too) and on the same street there are 2 of the best Peking Duck restaurants (Dadong and Duck de Chine) and western food few min walk away. With in 10 min walk you will reach Wangfujing and its night market, with a lot of shops and street food and plenty of foreign food choices as well.
So if you are looking for an authentic experience, would like to experience Chinese culture and see how the daily life in a Hutong unfolds, you are more than welcome to stay here, and we will try our best to provide you all that you need to make you feel comfortable.
The location is also optimal to explore more distant parts in Beijing and as we are located just in between 4 subway lines (2,5,6,1) so you can reach any part of the city very fast and almost without any transfers. Walking to the subway is just about 10 min.
To get from the airport can't be any easier. Best is to take shuttle bus #3 (to Yabao street, 4th stop) that stops on the corner of the street 3 min from the courtyard. If you are coming by train to Beijing Railway station, you can walk to the courtyard as it is only 1.5 km (less than a mile) away.
From the courtyard to:
Ritan (park and western shopping area) - 10 min walk
Guomao - 15-20 min (2 stops by metro line 1)
Sanlitun (western bars/restaurants area) - 15 min (taxi $3)
Gulou (old/hipster BJ) - 15 min, 2 stops by metro line 6
Ghost Street (Gui Jie) - 15 min (2 stops on line 2)
Lama Temple (Buddhist center) - 20 min (4 stops on line 5)
Forbidden City - 25-30min walking/ 10 min biking
* No smoking inside the room or the kitchen (can smoke in the yard).
Overall its a comfortabe stay but apartment may be a little small for 2 pax, better for 1. As the heater for the shower is shared among few rooms, its a bit of challenge getting warm water consistently while bathing. Luckily the weather is pretty warm when we were there and we can still bear with the cold shower, cant imagine if we have to do this apart from the summer. cleanliness in the apartment needs to be improved as well. Free beer is a bonus thou!
Staying at Dan's place was a fantastic start to our vacation through China. The room was clean and efficient, with the loft style bed being one of the most comfortable we slept on the entire trip! Dan was very easy to get a hold of and was quick to respond to any and all questions. He gave us a recommendation for a local guide that ended up being a great experience. Also, his cat just had kittens, and they were very cute. Would highly recommend staying with Dan!
This is what my husband, "Pepe", wrote to Dan.
...."We are now here in Shanghai after Beijing on Wednesday and Xian yesterday. We had a great time on our stay at your place. Thanks for everything. Bill was a great tour guide and he brought us back to the airport on early wee hours at dawn. Thanks for the referral. We love your kitchen, it feels like it's our own place. Thanks for the free phone too. I will definitely write a good review!!! Again, thank you! "
We had a warm welcome.
The place was neat and clean. We recommend taking early morning, or late showers, due to erratic flow of warm water.
We found a solution to that... Use a bucket to collect water and adjust the temperature as well. It is understandable considering the "Hutong" piping system. It adds unique ambience to the experience.
We liked the open concept as well as the layout of the unit and kitchen setting.
We commend Dan as a great host. We were never left unaided. A real great host he is. I give him a 5 star rating.
Dan's hutong apartment is in an excellent part of town! Excellent local restaurants right outside the apartment and walking distance to the major sights (forbidden city, Tienanmen square and most of the major parks and temples). You also get a very authentic hutong experience living amongst the locals. Thanks for letting us stay Dan.
Everything was great. Room is in a good location and a nice cozy place that was perfect for the two of us. Yuki was very friendly and accommodating. Beijing is quite the experience, lots to see and do while being fast paced. We initially took the train then walked to the apartment. Was a little tricky finding it but after that first time, had no problem getting to the place. Would maybe suggest taking a taxi the first time to familiarize yourself with the location. The addresses in China must be arranged systematically because every taxi driver knew exactly where to go without consulting a map or navigation.

About the Host, Dan
I'm resident of the world and China is the 6th country i call home.
I love to be in unfamiliar situations and meet people from different backgrounds. Before moving to China I hosted a lot of people that "surf on couches" and really enjoyed the experience. I also stayed at people places and of course hotels when i traveled, so i know how is it to be on the both ends, so i always try to make my guests feel as comfortable as possible (but without being over bearing).
Currently I engaged in the Start up community in Beijing after graduating from my MBA.
I have 2 mottos in life: "Live and let live" and "Almost doesn't count"
