The Space

I would appreciate if you read my description (there is a short version too) before sending me a message. Also, if the listing for your chosen dates is available in the calendar than i can host you, no need to double check it with me (my calendar is always updated). Thanks!

Here are my other listings in the same courtyard:

Short version for those in a hurry:
* It is a private house, studio style loft, very modern and new, inside traditional Chinese courtyard. You get your own space with private toilet/shower, bed (amazing IKEA mattress) and share the yard and kitchen/dining room (separate house) with other guests. It is centrally located in the heart of Beijing, walking distance to many tourist attractions and just between 4 subway lines (and 3 min walk from the airport shuttle bus stop).
Good wifi, free beers, free coffee/tea, free laundry, free breakfast ingredients, super flexible check in/out times and priceless peace and quite in the center of Beijing!

Long version:
D.Loft is a traditional Chinese courtyard in one of the most central areas in Beijing (walking distance to the Forbidden city, Tienanmen Square, Jingshan park, Ritan). The courtyard was renovated for a few months. While the unique original character of a traditional courtyard house was preserved, the rooms were transformed to provide modern comfort. All rooms have private entrance (and key) but share common yard and kitchen/dining room, each room includes: en-suite bathroom/shower, floor heating, air conditioning, quality IKEA mattress, etc. The house has high ceiling and by building a loft, the living/working area was separated from the sleeping area to provide more privacy and space. Because the room space is relatively small (14sqm/150sqf), a lot of emphasis was put on functionality and minimalism, like building the toilet under the staircase, choice of colors and tailor built furniture.

Privacy -
* You will have your own key to the courtyard and your room, so you are very independent.
* The rooms are totally private but the yard and kitchen/dining room are shared to allow mingling with other guests

I will be here to check you in, but how we interact afterwards depends on you. I'm more than happy to chat with my guests over a beer or glass of wine, even taking you out to bars or restaurants. But if you want your privacy, you won't notice I'm there unless you look for me

D.Loft is something between a hotel and home. We will provide you with all the convenience of a hotel such as: clean sheets, slippers, shampoo/body wash, hair dryer, international plugs, maid to clean your room (once-twice a week), advise you on trips and good restaurants, even help you to book tour guide/driver if needed, and make restaurant reservations, but won't charge you for that ;) The kitchen/dining area has fridge, microwave, stove, kettle, dishes, sink and breakfast ingredients (coffee/tea, milk, mineral water, beers, bread, jams etc.) for guests use. There are also phones/sim cards that you can use. Check in time is flexible in case the room is not booked yet, but if it is booked (or the maid came to clean it) please make sure to check out before noon, you can still leave your luggage at a secure place though.

Location is the biggest attraction of D.Loft, as we are located in the heart of Beijing in a traditional Chinese community (Hutong), which few foreigners get to experience during their visit in China. As it is inside the hutong, far enough from the street and not near any major roads, it is very quiet and tranquil experience rare to find in a metropolitan like Beijing. It is also very safe as all the neighbors know each other and also very friendly with my guests :) So if you are looking for an authentic experience, would like to experience Chinese culture and see how the daily life in a Hutong unfolds, you are more than welcome to stay here, and we will try our best to provide you all that you need to make you feel comfortable.

The location is also optimal to explore more distant parts in Beijing and as we are located just in between 4 subway lines (2,5,6,1) so you can reach any part of the city very fast and almost without any transfers. Walking to the subway is just about 10min. Outside of my place there are many restaurants (that other guest loved too) and on the same street there are 2 of the best Peking Duck restaurants (Dadong and Duck de Chine) and western food few min walk away.

To get from the airport can't be any easier. Best is to take shuttle bus #3 (to Yabao street, 4th stop) that stops on the corner of the street 3 min from the courtyard. If you are coming by train to Beijing Railway station, you can walk to the courtyard as it is only 1.5 km (less than a mile) away.

From the courtyard to:
Ritan (park and western shopping area) - 10 min walk
Guomao - 15-20 min (2 stops by metro line 1)
Sanlitun (western bars/restaurants area) - 15 min (taxi $3)
Gulou (old/hipster BJ) - 15 min, 2 stops by metro line 6
Ghost Street (Gui Jie) - 15 min (2 stops on line 2)
Lama Temple (Buddhist center) - 20 min (4 stops on line 5)
Forbidden City - 25-30min walking/ 10 min biking

  • I had a nice time staying here. Everything was true to form. Dan's place was super central and the subway made getting around easy. The walls are a little thin so you may hear a little more than anticipated. I would definitely stay here again.

Thanks Marta, you are more than welcome again when you want to "escape" Shunnyi ;)

  • The location in the hutong was authentic and convenient to transport, night market, restaurants. The loft was cute, true to photos. The mattress was very comfortable and I slept well. If you ever want to stay in a hutong, this is a great option.

  • We had a great stay in Dan's D.Loft apartment. It's a unique experience, so not for you if all you want is a pristine hotel room. The hutongs are small, quirky, a little bit cluttered/dusty, but definitely full of charm. Unfortunately Dan wasn't in town so we didn't meet, but communication was easy.

  • We loved staying at Dan's place! The location was excellent, the setting was so authentically Chinese, and the place was modern and comfortable. And don't get me started on the bed. It was hard to get out in the morning! Although we didn't get to meet dan, the other visitors in the hutong were really nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend the place to anyone!

    Toda Chaya!

  • Wow! Dan's place is nothing short of amazing! Warm rooms with great showers and underfloor heating and the best mattresses in China. The rooms are small but being so close to all the major tourist attractions, you won't spend much time in there. The commune has a "backpackers" feel to it, but with more privacy. Met great, likeminded travelers and made good friends. Dan is also friendly and super helpful. The surrounding areas feel authentic and genuine. I will come back again and again!

  • Always wanted to stay at a hutong place, so this decision. Was a lovely experience. Heated floor made the winter night a lot easier to get good sleep. This is a quite hutong problem though, sound proof is not great. If you are light sleeper, it maybe harder with noisy neighbor.

    Response from Dan:

Thank you guys, welcome again on your next visit to Beijing!

  • Dan's place was the perfect place for us to spend our flying visit to Beijing. In reasonable walking distance to Tianenman Square and all its surrounding attractions and positioned itself in a cute hutong surrounded by great restaurants, the location was spot on. The greatest blessing however, was most certainly the heating in the room which included both underground and radiator heating and was an incredibly welcome shelter from the Beijing frost. Cosy, convenient and not at all too costly, Dan's place was a great little home for our short time in Beijing and Dan himself made us feel very welcome.

Thanks Tom! Was lovely hosting you and Kate )

  • Dan was a great host. For future Beijing visits I would in any case choose his place. It is in best location (central), a beautiful ancient-style yard and Dan is a great host. Not only was he extremely flexible (we arrived at 2am) and very responsive, the facilities were great and unique for an aBnB experience.

Besides that: stylish apt, privacy, breakfast, and all other facilities needed

    Highly recommend

    Response from Dan:

Thank you Dominik :) Hope to see you next time in Beijing

  • Dan's Hutong apartment is an amazing to place to come back to at the end of a day. It was flawlessly clean, has everything a traveler would need. The breakfast was nice, and a good place to talk to other travelers in the same hutong. Floor heating was amazing.
I had a little trouble with the heater in the room, and Dan came in immediately to fix it. However, I forgot to mention that it was still cold, and that I found that you need to open the little box on the heater to turn it up. It was probably turned down by a previous guest because the room got so warm after just one night.
All in all, it was modern, convenient and warm place to stay at in the freezing Beijing weather.

I'm resident of the world and China is the 6th country i call home. I love to be in unfamiliar situations and meet people from different backgrounds. Before moving to China I hosted a lot of people that "surf on couches" and really enjoyed the experience. I also stayed at people places and of course hotels when i traveled, so i know how is it to be on the both ends, so i always try to make my guests feel as comfortable as possible (but without being over bearing). Currently I engaged in the Start up community in Beijing after graduating from my MBA. I have 2 mottos in life: "Live and let live" and "Almost doesn't count"
