Mendin' Fences is a working farm. During the summer months, we host horsemanship clinics. For more: you can find us on the web by the name of our farm.
We are a great destination for a quiet getaway, a horse stopover, or even a family reunion if renting the additional bunkhouse.
In each direction, you can find many activities to enjoy: Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge; wineries; historical sites (Rogersville & Jonesborough in particular). Two airports are 50 min & 1.25 hrs away.
The space
We moved to northeast TN from Florida. Like many people, we wanted to escape the hectic pace. When Vic retired from the police department, we launched a not-very-semi-retired plan to have a farm and to host educational clinics. So, we have cows and make hay and have an assortment of cats and dogs and, of course, horses.
Each year, in May and June, we have an international horse clinician come to our facility to coach adult horse owners about problem-solving and getting a better relationship with their horses without force or gimmicks. These are VERY successful and we have a LOT of fun. During these clinic dates, the cabin is not available (Mid-May to Mid-June).
** NOTE about PETS: We love animals! We understand that they are part of the family. Please discuss bringing your dog(s) with us and get PRIOR approval.
** NOTE about SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS: There is the queen bed in the bedroom; a futon in that bedroom becomes a bed -- it is not a full-sized double so most appropriate for one person or for children; the futon/couch in the living room opens to a regular double-size. We mention these dimensions because we want you to be comfortable so take these into consideration when considering the accommodations.
** NOTE about NUMBER OF GUESTS: We have set the limit on the number of guests at what we feel best suits the size of the cabin and for the sleeping arrangements. We operate on the "honor system" and expect our guests to be truthful about the number of guests when making the reservation. If it is determined that more guests than originally reserved arrive, we know you will understand revising your ABB reservation before actually checking in.
** NOTE about CLEANING: We are currently not charging a cleaning fee. We have been VERY fortunate in having lovely and respectable guests staying with us. We ask that you help us continue offering affordable rates for our cabin by being respectful and responsible guests.
Lately, my big project is to learn to speak Italian. Why did I think I could do this at this late stage in my life??!! It is fun and challenging. We have visited Italy several times and have had the most fun staying at an "agriturismo" which is similar to what we are offering here. One day, maybe some folks will jump over the pond and stay with US. Right now, we'd like YOU to come and relax and explore this beautiful undiscovered part of the United States.
Guest access
Guests are welcome to walk the property as long as they are mindful of equipment and livestock. Most days, Vic is available to take folks on a golf cart tour of the farm. If you bring your horse, we have an outdoor arena, a covered arena and the perimeter of hay fields that make a nice little trail ride.

A note about "accessibility": The cabin has a ramp that will accommodate most wheelchairs. The doors are wide enough to also accommodate most wheelchairs. The bathroom is accessible but there is a tub/shower combination and that is NOT handicapped equipped. Please be aware of these distinctions about the cabin. If you have any questions about the ability of a guest to utilize the cabin, please discuss this with us prior to booking.
Other things to note
Mendin' Fences is really a "destination" location. Come planning to unwind, breathe, and ... relax!! We have a DVD player (with a great selection of movies for all ages and genres) and … we now offer WIFI!!

We are in the country. This means we do not have "city water" --- we have a well. We have a filtration system for ALL of the water. In addition, we provide a filtration on the kitchen faucet for those who would like an added filtration process. From time to time, you MAY detect a slight hint of iron or sulphur. This is not harmful in any way but it is not chlorinated water as you will find in the city.
Within 45 min to an hour, you can easily find many, many opportunities for exploring history, shopping, or being entertained. We're glad to help you with that information for planning. Also, if you are interested in wineries ... we can help you map out a route for several in the area. And, if you are a thrift store junkie ... we've got you covered. ;-)
