Amed, East Bali

Amed refers to a number of small fishing villages on the east coast of Bali. It is a popular place for tourists wanting to experience the ‘real’ Balinese culture. There are many ceremonies held in Amed, and if you’re here for more than a few days, you might be lucky enough to get invited to attend one.

Popular activities in the area include fishing, snorkelling and diving at the two shipwrecks in the area.

Temples/Palaces/Balinese Culture

To satisfy the ‘culture vulture’ in you, why not visit the Floating Palace of Taman Ujung, the water palace Tirtta Gangga and the Kings Palace in Amlapura? All can be reached in around 30 minutes from Amed.
How about a day trip to the famous Besakih Temple? A visit to a traditional Aga village can also be arranged. The Aga people are the original people of Bali and only two Aga Villages are left one of wish is an hours drive from Amed.

Mountain Climbing

The more adventurous of you may enjoy an early morning climb of nearby Mount Agung to catch the sunrise.

Secret White Sand Beach

Any beach lovers will love a trip to the relatively unknown Virgin Beach or as it is locally known ‘white sand beach’, which can be reached in just under 1 hour.

Getting Around

By far the easiest way to get around the area is by scooter. We can organise rental for you and even a quick lesson. For those not wanting to put their driving skills to test on the Balinese roads, we can organise scooter taxi for you or a car and driver if you prefer.

Getting there and away

By far the easiest way to reach Amed is by taxi (contact us for excellent pick up rates). However, for the more adventurous travel it is possible to reach Amed by Bemo from Amlapura. Beware, however, that it may be a bumpy ride!

Interaction with Guests

At the moment been in late stages of pregnancy with a 2 year old to care for I unfortunately am not at the bungalows so much but always available by phone or email and staff are on hand to help too.

The Neighborhood

Very local area. You can really interact with locals and see their everyday activities such as them working the surrounding rice fields.

Getting around

Best way to get about is to hire a bike or walk. Our staff are always happy to give you a lift locally and we can organise bike or car taxi for longer trips.

  • Emmas bungalows are really comfertable, especially the bed!:) good terrace, you can see the stars at night. The breakfast area has a beautiful mountain view, and the breakfast is a standard breakfast. The staff is friendly. The location is a at least ten minute walk to the restaurants in Ahmed, and good beaches.

  • I stayed at Dillons for 7 nights and, as a woman traveling alone, always felt safe and welcome by Emma and her staff. The bed is quite comfortable and the room is furnished nicely. It is a little bit of a walk to the center of Amed, but the scooters for hire are cheaper than in town and will get you there in minutes. The views from my porch and from the restaurant are gorgeous as well. Good complimentary breakfast each morning prepared and served by a warm and charming staff. Take the time to talk with them and you won't be disappointed. Overall, great value for the money.

  • A few bugs around the room but kept out mostly with mosquito net. Worst complaint would be the internet but other than that very nice stay with accommodating staff, cooked us a delicious meal with fresh fish and helped book our ferry to Gili the next morning. Good value for money

  • I am torn in my thoughts on a review of Dillons. On the one hand the rooms are nice, the staff are very kind and Emma seems like a very nice person. On the other hand, the predominate impression one has when staying at Dillons is that of noise from the traffic. I went to Amed for a quiet time by the water. Dillons is about a kilometre from the water and it is right beside the main road leading into Amed. That means traffic and lots of it. The young boys in the Amed area seem to want to make this even worse by making their scooters as loud as possible. So, guests are left with their terribly noisy bikes racing 50 feet past their room at all hours of the day and night. Nothing Emma or the staff can do, just a very unfortunate consequence of bad location.

    Response from Emma:

Thanks for taking time to write a review Kent. As you say the road is out of our control but as most guesthouses are located on the same road this would be an issue there also. Plus from other reviews here and on trip advisor this isn't an issue for most guests who sleep fine dispute the road noise.
we have very recently had a sudden change of staff hence why all menu items were not available i do apologise about this.

also i do wish the other points were mentioned to staff or myself and they would of been sorted immediately! This is the first time i have heard of the problem with water pressure i can only assume it is something to do with the new water pump we installed which was supposed to improve pressure. Towels should of been provided when you checked in? I will mention this to staff to make sure they always provide towels.

We had a friendly welcome, were always well advised. Our room was very clean and nicely furnished. We had a great sleep, because there are new mattresses available.
We think in the area of Amed's is nothing to do. More suitable for nature lovers.

  • Emma's Yellow Room was a fantastic place to stay. The room was clean and very comfortable.

After traveling bali for over a month at many different places the bed in the yellow room was the best. The yellow room also comes with hot water, hard to find at this price, and the internet!

I got the chance to meet Emma and her son. She was just as kind as I thought she would be and her son was just too cute!

Not quite sure what the previous reviews were about because we definitely did not have any of those experiences. Since our stay we've gone back once and are trying to squeeze one more trip back to Amed! Great place!!

  • DECEPCIONANTE EXPERIENCIA.

DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE. The rooms AREN'T between beautiful gardens, but so close to a noisy road (impossible to rest!!!). Referring to the restaurant, it is four tables also close to the road and served by the housekeeper. There are lots of better options in Amed's coast, full of restaurant as and warungs where you can enjoy eating with the ocean's sound or life music concerts at a very good price.
We had booked for eight days but we moved before, although we lost all the money of the booking. The water of the shower was cold, not hot as it is described.

    Response from Emma:

There was no Deception at all Paloma, the map clearly shows exactly where we are located, we are located next to the same road as the majority of other guesthouses and hotels are. All the photos are real and show where we are! Other customers have no problem resting and sleeping in these rooms and we have had more than 2 occasions where customers stayed for longer than a month! Is there a problem having staff who clean and them after serve food? you ate there yet you don't mention if the food was good or bad? Our staff are experienced in working at other restaurants and prepare excellent food as mentioned on a lot of our reviews on this and other websites and at very reasonable prices. I am sorry the hot water didn't work well in the room but had you of told this to use we would of had it fixed!! although I have just checked the water and it is working perfectly plus no other guests have EVER had a problem with this!

  • The communikation was good. The rooms were clean. The problem was that we didn´t know anything about the construction works next to our bungalow.

When we arrived it was so noisy that we couldn´t even talk. It didn´t look really comfortable. Construction workers were sitting next so our window so that we had to close the curtains by day. There is also a street next to the bungalows where scooters and cars are passing.

The stuff was friendly and they tried to make us comfortable but we didn´t feel really comfortable so we left the place two hours after arriving.

  • Emma was a gracious and flexible host for our stay in Amed, Bali. My girlfriend and I stayed for over a week in one of the ensuite bungalows and enjoyed delicious complimentary breakfast each morning we woke up there. We arrived very late our first night and even though there were no other guests at the time, she had her staff waiting up to greet us. Her staff was fantastic, generally arriving around 8am and staying until we turned in each nigh around 9 or 10 pm.

The bungalows are Conveniently located only 5 minutes walk from the nearest beach and are also on the main drag and just minutes away from the more tourist central of the village.

By just our second night Emma was kind enough to arrange a small gathering of her local ex-pat friends in the area who were able to offer advice on how to plan out the rest of our full month trip. They were local business owners, well traveled, or had been in the surrounding area for some time. These connections and conversations proved to be very insightful.

I felt completely safe and secure above all else and even left all my luggage in my room for four nights when I took an excursion into central Bali.

Emma is completely in with the locals and was able to provide great tips on finding local food. Also extremely helpful, she and her family can arrange to hire a scooter for very cheap. I highly suggest the scooter since the area has such a great coastline to cruise and a few nice beaches for laying out. I was able to hit multiple snorkeling spots within 25 minutes from the bungalows :) Further, it is smart to ask Emma and her staff what fare prices are when paying for everything in the area including food, transportation, guides, or whatever you need.

I'm hoping to return before the end of my trip!
