Downtown House - Sun, Charm & Space

House - Private room · Robinson Street, Toronto, ON M6J, Canada

Historic, spacious and sunny house located on a leafy street, smack-bang between the eclectic boutiques of Queen West and the cultural feast of Kensington Market. Packed to the brim with colour, character & warmth. Public transit 80m from front door.

The Space

The room is a completely private space with plenty of natural light on the second floor of a charming & cosy house, located at Queen West & Bathurst in Downtown Toronto.

The room has a recently upgraded queen-size bed with super warm duvet and extra quilt for the winter. There is also a couch in the room for lazing and reading, an antique writing desk nestled in the window nook and an in-built closet. The room has wireless high-speed internet, hardwood floors and it's own heating vent, making it ultra cosy in winter. The window is south-facing, so that the sunlight bounces off the golden-amber walls for most of the day to create a really welcoming space.

The House

The original part of this house was built in the late 1800's so it has a bit of Toronto history included in its charm. The front entrance is a cedarwood vestibule and the kitchen and sunroom are all more recent additions to the original building. The sitting room has a huge couch that easily fits a long human for an afternoon nap, and the kitchen/breakfast/sunroom area is a spacious spot for a meal or cuppa. There is a small office downstairs, and the hardwood staircase leads you to the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. You can feel the history in the house despite it being updated and freshly painted, and there is also a great story about how we found this gem of a dwelling that involves a Muppeteer and a yard sale - will fill you in!

*There is also a studio out the back - check out the listing for that through our profile!

The Location

Located on a quiet, tree-lined street 250 metres from the heart of Queen Street West - boutiques, restaurants, cafes, galleries, theaters and bars. For more details on what's close by - read The Neighborhood and Getting Around sections!

Guest Access

Guests have full access to the living room, bathroom, kitchen (new stove + oven), laundry (washer & dryer), sunroom (with fireplace!) and back yard/garden - which is very private and a lovely oasis in the middle of the downtown buzz. We are very used to having guests so these spaces are as much yours as they are ours. High speed wireless internet available through out house.

Fresh towels are supplied on arrival. There's plenty of utensils and dinnerware to do your own cooking, a stovetop coffee maker, and a bountiful tea selection for you to dip in to at your leisure. We also provide breakfast basics - milk, juice, granola, oats, dried fruit, toast & spreads.

Interaction with Guests

Your room is entirely private, and the common areas are shared with Stuart and I - though Stuart spends most of his weekdays at work, and I venture out frequently. We love to share meals or a drink if the occasion arises, but if you'd like to hang out on your own while you stay, we are more than happy to let you have your space - and there is certainly enough room in this house for you to do so!

Do note: in some of our reviews, some have mentioned that there are other guests in the house other than Stuart and I. These reviews were made when this listing had a previous owner, and Stuart and I will let you know in advance if it turns out that we have another booking at the same time.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is packed-full of good things. We are 300m from the hustle and bustle of Queen St West, where you'll find plenty to eat and peruse. From the house, it's an easy 10 min walk to the infamous Trinity-Bellwoods park which is great for running, walking and picnicing. Heading west on Queen you'll find yourself in the art and design district where you'll notice independent art galleries scattered along the street amongst boutiques, coffee shops and the odd cheap 'n' cheerful take away store. A tram ride down Queen in the same direction will get you to the The Drake or The Gladstone Hotel - local nightspots for food, drink, theatre and culture. You'll also find Ossington St, Parkdale and Roncesvalles along the tram line - hip and happening neighborhoods just shy of the humungous High Park (great for hiking and getting a bit lost).

In the other direction is the colorful and bohemian Kensington market, which is a 10-15 min walk through a (different) park and across Dundas st. Here you can get anything from vintage clothing to mexican groceries to award winning cheeses to handmade crafts. Other than the plethora of fresh fruit, veg and groceries available at the market, there is also a bit supermarket 5 min walk away on Queen. You'll also find the Art Gallery of Ontario an 18 min walk away. If you're a yogi, why not take a free introductory class (or ten) at one of the many nearby yoga studios while you stay?

Getting around

Public transit is super-easy. The Bathurst streetcar stop is 80m from our front door, and will connect you directly to Bloor Train Station within 15m min. In the other direction the streetcar can deliver you down near the lake in roughly the same time.

The Queen street streetcar stop is 250 m away from our front door and can get you to the centre of downtown in 10-15 minutes. This streetcar operates all night, and they both come very frequently (every five minutes - ish).

A ticket for public transport costs $3 - or slightly cheaper to buy tokens from the corner store right out front of our house. Transfers from the driver can get you on to the subway/next streetcar/bus so that you don't have to buy another ticket for your connection.

It also only costs $3 on public transit to get from Pearson International Airport to our front door, and you only have to walk the last 200 metres. You take the airport bus to Kipling station, subway to Bathurst, and then hop on the 515 bus (that picks up passengers directly within the station) and 7 minutes later it will drop you off at the end of the street!

There are bixi rental bikes located about 500 metres from our front door, and these can be hired with a credit card.

There is also an Autoshare and Zipcar station 150m from our front door if you are looking to rent a vehicle while you are here!

If you have your own car, we can provide you with information about the parking that is available on the street.

Other Things to Note

In case of confusion, you might notice that some of the older reviews for this listing refer to the prior host, Trish. We have taken over the house (and listing) since our friend Trish has moved back to her country home - so it's just Stuart and I in the house now.

  • This was our first stay with Airbnb hosts and couldn't have picked a better place. Ceda and Stuart were really welcoming and friendly. A warm, cosy house in a great part of town, easy walking distance to everywhere that we wanted to go to. Great instructions how to get to house on public transport all for $3!! Would recommend them to anyone. Arrived as strangers, left as friends. Sure our paths will cross again. Kindred spirits.

  • I had a wonderful stay with Ceda & Stuart! Ceda was there to greet me on check in, give me a tour, chat & help me with anything I needed. She happily answered all my questions :) I felt very welcome in their home. Ceda & Stuart were also very communicative, which made things stress-free and awesome. The house is so lovely and everything was clean/as pictured/etc. The location is good, too - I ended up walking everywhere I wanted to go. There are lots of yummy food options within a 15 min walking radius of the house. I had a great time and would highly recommend!

  • Ceda and Stuart were the best hosts we could have possibly ended up with, and we are so glad we did! Our trip was so enjoyable knowing that we had such a home-like and friendly environment as home base. The yellow room was lovely, and the location was absolutely perfect. We were close to everything we wanted to do, and walked everywhere we needed to go. Our hosts were warm, helpful, and inviting, and Ceda made sure to answer any questions we had right away. The other two guests were also absolutely wonderful; never thought that the lodging would be one of the best parts of the trip! Had a wonderful time chatting with everyone at the house, and learned how to play a cool new card game. If you're headed to Toronto and get the chance to stay with Ceda and Stuart, do it!

  • Within the first few minutes of entering Ceda & Stuart's home I felt as though I was among friends that I had known forever. I felt so comfortable staying there, and truly feel that I lucked out. I wanted to extend my stay just so I could hangout with them. They are both so kind, and helpful, and they made toast and tea!!!

  • The place is cozy and located in a nice old neighborhood. Ceda and Stuart were easy and gracious hosts. Good public transportation nearby.

  • Ceda and Stuart were totally friendley and nice. They took care a lot that I felt fine and I could ask them day and night when I had questions or problems. On my first day they already had a map of Toronto for me to help me to get arround and the room was wonderful. They take care of their guests a lot and want them to feel good. I highly recommend their place to everyone :)

  • I very much enjoyed my stay. This was my first time having a private room in a shared dwelling with the hosts and I did not know what to expect. Ceda left all the necessary instructions for the home and I quickly figured my way around the house including the well stocked kitchen (they had breakfast granola and tea at the ready for guests) and the WIFI. The bedroom was warm and comfortable. If you are a private person you can stay in there to read and work as it has a couch and a desk. I would stay again.

About
Hi there! My name is Ceda, and the dashing man is Stuart. We have recently moved to Toronto from Melbourne, Australia. Stu is a Professor of foresight at OCAD University - the local art & design school. He hosts a storytelling potluck dinner, reads a lot, and yearns for a dog. I am a children's entertainer and educator of sorts, I like to dance unprofessionally, and I think that a dog is a huge responsibility. We like to host all kinds of guests - whether you just need a base from which to explore or work, or if you'd like to join us for for a chat over dinner or cups of tea if the occasion arises. We like to think we are helpful, generous and relaxed hosts, and look forward to having you stay either short or long term!
