Enjoy a peaceful stay in our quiet, earthy community between the bay and the sea, in an creative, artistic space. 10 minute walk to beach. No TV (who needs it?) You must either have a COMPLETE PROFILE on Airbnb, or several reviews, preferably both. If neither, your booking will be declined.

The space
Old Purple Thumb Works is the creatively renovated Humboldt Pulpworkers union hall. A large barn door separates the apartment from my art studio - it is NOT sound proof. I work in the art studio Monday through Friday, from around 8:30 am to around 5:30 pm, guests are requested be be quiet during these times - other than that you'll have the place to yourselves and can make noise.

There is a full kitchen, radiant heat floors, a VERY comfortable sofa-bed, and a beautifully tiled bathroom and walk-in shower. The ceiling is blue, the walls are white and there is lots of artwork hanging - including figure drawings (tasteful nudes).

Electricity is supplied by a net-zero grid-tied solar PV system. Hot water for your use and for the radiant floor is heated by an air-source heat pump.

Outside there is a picnic table, off street parking, bird feeders and some funny looking plants.

Where you’ll be

Arcata, California, United States

Manila is an unincorporated community with a mixed socioeconomic population in Humboldt County. It has hidden gems, and some not-so-hidden messy areas. There are few services in Manila but it's a short drive to both Arcata and Eureka. The beach and dunes are an easy walk away, less than ten minutes, and there is a near-by park with a disc golf course and access to Humboldt Bay.

I'm an artist and Old Purple Thumb Works is my studio & workshop as well as my largest art project; it is and always will be a work in progress. My studio, while mostly an art rubber stamp workshop and mail-order house (Meer Image), is also set up to accommodate whatever type of art I feel inspired to create, including hand drawn animated films, life drawings, photography, pyrography and inventions to aid is the creation of all these things. The kitchen doubles as a home brewery. I like whiskey and have pondered the idea of distillation, but decided to stick to brewing because it can't kill you. My new life motto is "P2p" which stands for "pencil (or pen) to paper". It is a reminder that when gadgets and the internet start to suck your creativity, it's time to put pencil to paper - doodle, draw or write - just put the gadget down for a while. My wife Carol and I live very nearby on Humboldt bay with our two cats, Euro and Sirus. We like hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching and having bonfires big enough to see from space.
