About this listing
This is the main bedroom, upstairs. Its a very large room with a king size bed, opening onto a private garden. There's an ensuite bathroom, shared with one other bedroom (that's usually empty).
Open, airy, spacious, quiet, cool, shady, with views of river and forest. Our guests can't believe they're in the middle of a city of ten million people...
Natural Swimming Pond. We've built a eco-pool on the river bank, below the verandah. The pool water is filtered through the sand and gravel below the spiral staircase and by the climbing plants - the ones you can see on the verandah upstairs and outside the windows of the rooms upstairs. There are fish in the pool, but they hide away whenever anyone goes near the water.
There's a shower next to the pool, with hot (solar) and cold water. Please don't use any soap or shampoo at the pool shower, as the shower water mixes with the pool water.
Wifi. There's wifi in the house.
Bicycle. There's a men's bike you can borrow, fun to take up to the shopping mall.
Filtered water. All water for the house comes from a well. We filter this water for drinking through Pureit, a four stage filter that cleans the water to World Health Organisation standard.
Interaction with Guests
My partner or I stay in the house for a few days each month. Our house manager, Mbak Isem stays in the house every night, and will be there to greet you, to make you breakfast etc. Her English is very limited, but somehow it works out.
The house is three minutes walk from a traditional market for fruit, vegetables and meat, which runs every morning from 6 am to 10 am. The earlier you get there, the cooler the day and the more produce there is to choose from. In the afternoon and evening the same street, Rawajati Timur 2, is a series of food stalls and small shops.
We are seven minutes walk from two train stations, Pasar Minggu Baru, and Duren Kalibata. From there you can go into the city or to Depok, Bogor or Tanggerang.
We are three minutes walk from a traditional market.
We are five minutes walk from Plaza Kalibata, a shopping mall with supermarket, clothes and shoe shops, cafes and restaurants, ATMs, etc.
There is a motor-bike taxi (Ojek) stand in the next street, two minutes walk. Or Mbak Isem can call an Ojek to pick you up from home.
Other Things to Note
Like most places in Jakarta, Sabruna is only a few hundred meters from several mosques. The first call to prayer is at 4.30 AM, when it is still dark outside. You will definitely hear it, but, unless you want to get up and pray, the best thing to do is to lie there and enjoy the sound of the different calls, which only last five minutes, and then go back to sleep.
No pets please. We like the place to be welcoming to all the native birds and animals.
Smoking is allowed on the verandas, not inside.
No loud music after 10 pm, or our neighbours will be upset.
What a wonderful place to stay in Jakarta. Patrick and Avi's home is a green, spacious and very relaxing place, beautifully laid out along the Ciliwung river. The house itself is located in a local residential area that is part of a bustling neighbourhood with local markets, roadside food stalls, malls and good transportation connections to the rest of Jakarta. Patrick and Avi were away during my stay, but I very much enjoyed the hospitality of their friendly house manager mbak Isem. Highly recommended!
What a great oasis of peace and quiet in the middle of this metropole. The pool, the rooms, the space, the always smiling service of the lady helping the family(plus her simple but great meals), we enjoyed it completely.
A nice spot in an ordinary local area in Jakarta, exactly what we liked!
Patrick a his family were out during our stay. But it turned out very easy to get in touch with them by phone. And they are most helpful!
It was very great to recover from our jetlags in Patrick's relaxing home. The room was enormous and spotless, as was the private bathroom. The natural pool (with view on the river!) is a huge plus and helps to cool down after a day browsing through Jakarta. The neighborhood is also great with lots of small roadside restaurants and the big shopping mall nearby for more advanced consumer needs. Patrick was super helpful communicating with us via Whatsapp and making sure everything was alright, and Mbak Isem was very friendly and caring.
I have a pleasant stay on Sabruna house. It's amazing to see this kind of house in the middle of Jakarta. I enjoy the natural pond and swim there in the morning.
Mba Isem & Patrick's wife are so welcome and nice. There are a lot of interesting books there too in the room. It's a refreshing place in Jakarta.
I could not be more pleased with the home and the house manager who lives there. It's a beautifully laid out house in a thriving neighbourhood. I have never seen a pool like that, but it was quite clean! I would return, and owe a debt of gratitude to Patrick and Avi! dgs
Staying here was very relaxing. The balcony overlooking the Ciliwung river, the sound of the frogs and almost nightly sightings of a civet cat, a pool to cool down, swimming with the fish, easy access to the airport (early morning about 45 min), and a 5 min walk away the Pasar Minggu Baru train station and a big choice of street food. The room itself is spacious and beautiful with a green terrace full of orchids off it! Mbak Isem is really friendly and welcoming as are Patrick and Avi who are often here. Totally unlike the rest of Jakarta. Highly recommended!
In all the buzz and traffic of Jakarta, it’s almost unbelievable to find such a tranquil place to stay. With a balcony surrounded by trees and bamboo, a natural swimming pool with fish and frogs to keep you company, and Mbak Isem to welcome you, it’s all in all - perfect!
The area of Rawajati is also lovely with a vibrant traditional street market only a couple of minutes away. If you’re feeling like a calorific experience, I can recommend the martabak. Being a short easy walk from a train station, it’s also ideal for getting around the city. Many thanks Patrick and Avi, I’ll be back. x
