Private room and bath in an elegant century-old flat
Nineteenth-century finesse -- 11-foot ceilings, spacious principal rooms with elaborate wainscoting, period furniture -- meets contemporary comfort in Vancouver's downtown core. Our home is situated just above Coal Harbour's lively waterfront promenade and sculpture gardens, and a short walk from the Vancouver Convention Centre, Vancouver Art Gallery, Robson Street, the central business district, Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium, English Bay, Chinatown, Gastown, Yaletown, and Vancouver's colourful Davie Street gay village. If you venture farther, public transit, literally at the front door, puts the entire city within easy reach. And if you come by car, there is ample on-street parking.
It would be hard to find a better location for your Vancouver visit. (The Shangri-La hotel chain certainly likes the neighbourhood -- it built its new five-star luxury hotel tower half a block away.)
Your private room is small but cozy, a snug and peaceful retreat overlooking a fountain courtyard ringed with magnolia and cherry trees. Amenities include a brand new pillow-top double bed, adjacent bathroom with an over-sized claw-foot bathtub and shower, WiFi, and use of the flat's large drawing room, 4,000-volume library, and dining room. There is a piano in your room, for whenever musical inspiration strikes. And the apartment comes complete with a kindly and well-mannered five-year-old English mastiff named Hugo; a giant puppy whose friendly 'hellos' have made him a neighbourhood celebrity.
Our number one goal is to make your visit to Vancouver a happy one, providing you with a home away from home that is restful, serene, secure, and genial.
About your host:
I have lived and worked in Vancouver for 30 years as a professional writer and editor, watching the city evolve past its Anglo-European roots to become Canada's most culturally diverse community. I'll be happy to answer all of your questions about vacationing here — or elsewhere in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. If this is your first visit to Vancouver I can help you get the most out of your holiday with advice and suggestions about where to go, what to see and do, which restaurants and nightspots to try, museums and galleries to visit, beaches, day hikes, special events; and if you've been before, perhaps I can help place the city in a fresh context, with background on its history, ethnography, politics and arts.
Michael was a wonderful host, so much so that we are staying with him again on the last leg of our journey. His communication in the lead up to the stay was quick, friendly and informative. We loved our warm and cosy room and Michael's beautiful apartment which is full of fascinating books, art and furniture and attention to detail. It is spotlessly clean and the location was perfect for us between the lovely west end and the harbour. We fell in love with beautiful and gentle Hugo. And best of all is Michael himself who is such a warm, welcoming and interesting person. We hope to see you in London next time Michael! We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Vancouver. Highly recommended.
Nice and cosy appartement and Michael is a Nice, warm and easy going host..
Very well locales and let you walk easily in Vancouver.
We would highly recommend a stay in Michael's charming in-city accommodation.
The first floor apartment, with its central Coal Harbor location, has easy access to all of Vancouver's many highlights, whether land or marine based.
Importantly, and to our delight, Michael was a most gracious and knowledgeable host, who made us feel very welcome and who enriched our experience by his insights and (website hidden) tales of this great Canadian city and its populace. It was an equal pleasure getting to know him and his beloved dog, Hugo.
Michael is an incredibly witty and caring host, having Hugo, the gentle giant, at his side. His home is an extraordinary place by location and accomodation as it is by atmosphere. It feels as being part of a vibrant city and at the same time like having a rest in an oasis of tranquility and comfort. All the advice Michael gave for visiting sites and places in Vancouver and around Vancouver Island turned out to be gems, be it restaurants, accomodations, historic sites or scenic beauties. We enjoyed his company and place beyond all measure.
It was such a pleasure to meet Michael and stay at his exceptional abode. I will certainly be back to stay again and hope to stay longer and enjoy his delightful company and conversation. He was quick and responsive in our communication to organize check-in and getting settled. Best stay I've had in Vancouver thus far.
Michael's place is incredibly gorgeous and is full of amazing artwork and books. We stayed for three nights in his cozy room and could not have had a better location - directly downtown and central to everything.
Michael is the nicest and most interesting human being on earth and was happy to make coffee for us in the morning and give us insider information on places and things to do. I'm happy to say that I now have a friend in Vancouver!
I had an excellent stay at Michael's place. He is so warm and welcoming, with helpful suggestions for places to eat in his well situated apartment. I enjoyed being able to walk to my destinations, and equally appreciated my daily runs through close-by Stanley Park. Michael was generous with the use of his kitchen for food prep, and made space available in his fridge for my groceries. We had some lovely chats together which made my stay even more enjoyable. Thank you Michael!
Michael was a wonderful and very friendly host, his place is lovely and very comfortable. We would clearly recommend him to anyone and stay with him again if we have the opportunity. Thanks for everything.
We had a good experience with Michael in Vancouver. The room has a very comfortable bed and there were fresh flowers in our room upon arrival, in the hallway and washroom which was very refreshing. Michael was very welcoming and eager to aid us with travel suggestions. He even suggested places to go in Victoria, where we went before going to Vancouver. We had some days of snowy/stormy weather in Vancouver and Michael welcomed us to lounge in the drawing room which was much appreciated. It was also nice to come home everyday to greet Hugo, the largest dog we have ever met. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.
Michael is a great host and his home full of charm. Located in an upmarket part of town with easy access to everything.
