About this listing
Tucked away at the end of a road, this spacious, fully equipped, 2 bedroom home is surrounded by the forest yet close to the beach. The back patio offers space for quiet relaxation and/or evening cocktails amidst the sights and sounds of the tropical forest. Wi-Fi & A/C.
Playa Avellana is known for its surf breaks, its long stretch of pristine beachfront and its world famous restaurant, Lola's. At low tide, Avellana has numerous tide pools perfect for a family beach day. It is located just 20 minutes south of Playa Tamarindo and 2 miles north of Playa Negra. Avellana is a quite town on dirt roads. A rental car is highly recommended.
Within minutes from the house you can enjoy: breakfast, lunch & dinner, surfing, yoga, massages, golf (Hacienda Pinilla is one mile away), horseback riding, stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking, zip-lining, canopy tours, etc.
Interaction with Guests
We, as on-site owners, have our family's home and the guest house on 2.5 acres, surrounded by seasonal streams. We are more than happy to help our guests arrange any tours and answer any questions. Or, if guests wish to be left alone...they will have to consult our friendly dogs.
Bret's place is in a good location, a close drive to the beach and restaurants and bars, his own restaurant the beach box serves really grat food and fresh juices. The apartment has tons of space and a good set up for sharing with a group.
There are not enough words for this place. We stayed for 1 month in this beautiful house, half of that with just my partner and I. For the other half, his parents came to visit us.
First, the house. It's huge. It is bigger than I thought. There is enough room to do yoga outside, in the bedroom, and in various spaces in the living room. I've never had such a big kitchen to cook in. It was wonderful.
My favourite moments in the house were on the back porch, early morning, drinking coffee and watching the monkeys climb from tree to tree. And it was quiet except for the noises of the animals. If you love nature, you'll fall in love with this house and this area!
The bed in the master bedroom is gigantic and comfortable. The fans were enough for us to keep cool without A/C (though between 11am and 1pm, it was best to be at the beach instead of indoors, sweating our faces off). We wanted hot water for the house (which is definitely available) and we hardly used it.
Now, about Playa Avellana. Though Bret suggested it, we did not rent a car, which was just fine! We walked everywhere and took occasional taxis to Tamarindo and once to Rincon de la Vieja (national park nearby). To walk to the beach is about 15 minutes walking quickly and about 20 minutes more leisurely. It's a scenic walk and it's definitely doable. My partner's father is nearing 80 and he loved it.
Playa Avellana is a gem. Just going to Tamarindo for a day proves it. There's very little trash (and the little there is, people will gladly pick up). There's Bret and Amy's restaurant (awesome burritos!) and Lola's (awesome smoothies!) There is beautiful white sand and rolling waves. I loved running on the beach and swimming in the waves. I hear surfing is amazing there as well. The great thing about Avellanas is that it's not totally "discovered". It's not full of restaurants and groups of drunken people leaving cigarette butts in the sand and people trying to sell you souvenirs every minute. It's different. It's like a little piece of nature still intact and alive for you to really experience.
Finally, Bret and Amy. They were both right there, willing to help us with everything. It's amazing that two people who have a business they run 6 days a week still took the time to bring us extra porch chairs when we asked and bring us weekly fruits/vegetables off the truck that delivers to their house. They didn't have to do that, but they did. I guess it's all about Pura Vida.
If you feel like you need some peace and quiet, if you love animals, if you love the heat (because it is HOT!) - you will love it here! I have actually reached the word limit now, but if I could say more, I would. Go here! You won't be sorry.
After visiting several beaches in the South and North of Costa Rica we decided that playa Avellana is one of the best! We enjoyed it very , very much.
Bret and Amy's house is spacious and comfortable (we were two adults and two kids). The air conditioning is only on the living area of the house, but nights were cool and by opening the bedroom windows and let the breeze flow through was enough to have comfortable night sleeps (rooms have ceiling fans).
The house is at a dead end street which provides a sense of privacy and safety. Playa Avellana is about 10 minutes drive from the house.
Brad and Amy own a small restaurant at abut 50 meters from the beach, and honestly, it was among the best food we had in Costa Rica (gigantic burritos, you ought to try the "Carne Desmechada").
Amy provided us with accurate directions to get there and was nice enough to let us check in a couple of hours earlier.
You can buy food near by (15 minutes drive), but if you want a larger variety of goods you will have to drive about 30 minutes to Villareal or Tamarindo.
