About this listing
Our cosy cottage is a converted Edwardian dairy in the heart of the Lake District in north west England. It was the scene of butter making and meat curing well into the 20thC. A peaceful hideaway, ideal if you are looking to get away from it all!
***Please note, except for last minute bookings, Manesty Dairy is let on a weekly basis (Saturday-Saturday) between February/March and October and over Christmas and New Year. But do message us for a special offer or last minute deal - we have great discounts between September and March and stays of a week are always better value.***
A cosy cottage for two in Borrowdale in the heart of the Lake District. Manesty Dairy is an attached Edwardian cottage, tucked at the edge of a small private wood which shelters rare native red squirrels, owls and other wildlife.
The cottage is 'upside down' so the open-plan living room and kitchen are upstairs and look out to the little wood. The fully equipped kitchen has locally mined slate worktops and modern appliances as well as Emma Bridgewater mugs, to celebrate British craft. The living area has a big dining table and comfy sofa.
Downstairs is the bedroom and the bathroom, which has underfloor heating and a shower over the bath.
You enter the cottage through is a sunny porch, a nice place to sit at breakfast, but also great for drying wet waterproofs and for storing your walking boots.
Outside is a courtyard garden and access to the woodland walk and its secret places to sit and enjoy the view. The wood fired hot tub is also in the wood and is available to hire for £25 per day (please book in advance). There is space to park one car by the cottage.
Guests have their own parking space and entrance and have exclusive use of the cottage. They are welcome to explore our small wooded fell side behind the cottage. They have access to a shared utility room with washer, drier, extra tourist information, games, puzzles, books and portable bbq.
We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub in our little wood, which can be booked for a day at a time for an additional cost by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.
Interaction with Guests
Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.
Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with its two teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The nearest shops are in Keswick. The 'Honister Rambler' bus takes you to the 5 miles into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the there is a bus from Grange all-year round, a also a launch service on the Lake.
We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 12 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate. We're at the foot of Catbells, which is well known as the Lakes' favourite beginner's fellwalk, but there are also challenging day hikes up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) or relaxing rambles by the lake or in the woods.
From Easter to October a bus (77/77A, the 'Honister Rambler') goes from Manesty's front gate to Keswick. All year round the 78 goes to Keswick from Grange, less than a mile away and there is also a boat, the 'Keswick Launch' which picks up from High Brandlehow and Lodore landing stages, both about a mile from Manesty.
From Keswick, there is a bus (X4/X5) to our nearest railway station Penrith which is well served by high speed trains (around 3 hours to London).
You can look up the bus times on the Stagecoach website.
And of course, you can bring your car. We have off road parking.
Except for last minute bookings, Manesty Dairy is usually let Saturday-Saturday between February and November. In winter, the minimum stay is three nights. If you are looking for a short break, try our Studio Apartment - or drop us a line and we'll try and accommodate you.
Please do not exceed the maximum occupancy of 2 guests. When you book we will ask for the number of guests staying and their names and addresses - we are happy for you to change these, but just let us know! We do have cottages for more than 2 if you need.
The price includes bed linen, towels and electricity.
Our accommodation is non smoking and pet free.
We don't include any cleaning fees in our prices, instead we ask you to leave your accommodation clean and tidy at the end of your stay. On your arrival we ask for a small returnable deposit (£10 per person, min £20) which we hold while you are with us. At the end of your stay we return this after a quick check. We would like to do this deposit through airbnb but their minimum deposit is ($100/£70) which we think is too much! If you would prefer to pay a cleaning fee instead, please let us know and we can arrange this.
We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub, which can be booked for a day at a time by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.
Finally, please let us know of any anything you need or any problems you might have while you are here. We want you to have a great stay with us and letting us know of any issues as soon as they arise means we can sort them out as soon as possible instead of their dragging on through your holiday. Feel free to ask us about great places to walk and visit while you are here - our family has been at Manesty for six generations so we should be able to point you in the right direction!
Description was accurate, as were the pictures. The cottage is in a very peaceful and tranquil area, close enough to Keswick to buy amenities. Alan and Cheryl and Anna made us feel very welcome. A wonderful introduction and many nice touches such as 12 well 'straight from the door' maps with routes and descriptions. Outdoor hot tub was a nice touch. I highly recommend to all.
We were made very welcome on my our arrival and shown around the cottage.
It is a lovely place to stay for two and was warm, clean and well equipped.
It is a 15 minute drive to Keswick and there are also pubs around Borrowdale offering delicious food and warm fires if you want to walk or cycle somewhere closer.
Alan and Cheryl were excellent hosts and made us feel very welcome upon arrival, they were very informative and were on hand if needed but we were left alone to enjoy our break
The cosy cottage was exactly how described, very clean and had everything we needed
The location is beautiful with loads to do just a short distance from the cottage,
We would definatly recommend the hot tub, it's location is fantastic and it is a great way to relax, no matter what the weather is doing !!!
All in all I can thoroughly recommend a stay at the Cosy cottage,
We had such a lovely stay in this cottage! The owners were friendly, helpful and always around if you needed them. They explained everything clearly and had lots of really useful extras such as walks from the cottage and an OS map. I would definitely recommend this place to others!
Really enjoyed this place. The hosts were very friendly and the property was as pictured and described. Gorgeous area, in countryside but only 5 miles from Keswick. It was a cluster of buildings, so we didn't feel we were completely isolated, yet it was very quiet and private. We'll definitely book here again.
Our hosts were fantastic, friendly and exceptionally helpful. The area was even more scenic than we anticipated and the hiking was challenging and enjoyable!
Lovely cottage with perfect hosts.
However it did not live up to the expectations that were provided by the pictures on the website.
As well as this, we were told that the area was suitable for those without cars however I would disagree as there are limited shops nearby and the area is very isolated.
Thanks for your review. We're sorry you felt that the cottage wasn't represented well by the photos on the listing. The interiors are all recent photos, mostly taken just this spring (May 2014) and our accommodation is inspected and compared to our advertising as part of the Quality Cumbria assessment scheme run by Cumbria Tourism. Perhaps you could let us know how you thought the cottage differed from the photos so we can look into it.
For a rural part of the Lake District we consider ourselves well connected - most places in rural Cumbria don't have a bus service at all!
When guests ask about visiting without a car we clearly list for them the distance to the nearest village (Grange with two cafes, three quarters of a mile) and to the nearest shops (Keswick, 5 miles) along with the bus routes that would be running during the proposed time of their holiday (78 from Keswick to Grange all year round, 77/77A past the door Easter - Nov). Our intention is that guests can then make their own informed decisions about whether our cottage would meet their own requirements for holidaying without a car.
With this information, which is also on our listing, we would hope it would be clear that yes, we are in a quiet rural location and yes, there are no shops nearby! There is however, a bus which can take you to the shops if you plan your day appropriately (which makes us less isolated than all those other places in the Lakes which don't have a bus!).
We hope you enjoyed your stay.

About the Host, Alan & Cheryl
Alan's family has lived at Manesty, in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years. Our children (now grown up) are the sixth generation to have lived here. Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England.
If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to. We're really proud of our cottages and glamping accommodation and love our area. We hope to welcome you soon!
