A double room in a stylish and quiet flat, my place isn't in tourist London, so you can live like a real Londoner for your days here! Check out the reviews and description below.
This is your room, with a double bed. There are two separate duvets available to stop arguments over the covers!
My place is a two bedroomed architect-designed apartment. A double room is available, for a maximum of two people. You will share the apartment with me, Matthew.
Like London, the place is modern on the inside but old on the outside!
WHAT IS YOURS: Your room has a double bed (140cm wide), with lots of storage and a desk. Towels are provided, and there is a hairdryer and a European socket adaptor
WHAT IS SHARED: You share with me the open plan living room with high, rooflit ceiling, and a piano if you want to play!
Please feel free to use the kitchen area, with oven, dishwasher, microwave, and all utensils, and dining table
Bathroom with shower, bath and washing machine
South facing balcony overlooking private gardens, great for breakfast or lunch in good weather.
and ... There are friendly neighbours!
The place has wi-fi
WHERE: The apartment is in Southwark, south of the Thames. To be clear, this location, 16 mins walk from the Elephant and Castle, is not in tourist London. If you want to roll out of bed into Piccadilly Circus, then this is not the place for you. The area is a residential area just south of the centre of London.
So if you need somewhere comfortable, clean, sunny, and quiet, that is quick to get into town, and in an interesting multicultural area where real people actually live, then this apartment is great!
Central London is pretty big. Yet thanks to the bend in the river Thames, the flat is equidistant to most places of interest - Westminster, Soho, the West End, Covent Garden, and the City of London are a short bus journey away.
The area isn't London's most glamorous, but it is convenient. In fact, with the wind in the right direction, when lying in bed you can hear Big Ben striking!
Local facilities are great for buying provisions. Not only are good British supermarkets under five mins walk away, but a very handy well stocked 24hour Turkish store is also close by, where you can get groceries, fruit and freshly baked bread 24 hours a day!
The buses from the Walworth Road, which is three minutes walk away, are frequent and the best way get here. It takes as little as 20 minutes to all of central London, with 11 routes during the day, and 7 routes all night
The nearest tube station is Elephant and Castle, (in zone 1). This is 16 minutes walk, and is on two lines, Bakerloo and Northern. Kennington tube is also within 15-20 mins walk.
The nearest London cycle hire scheme (only £2 for 24hours access) is a few mins walk away
Elephant and Castle has the Thameslink trains, direct to all central London stops, plus further north and south.
The great thing about this location is all five London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and City) take around the same time to get to from the place, around 1 hour or so.
Other Things to Note
Check in is flexible by arrangement. Check out is usually best before 11am, though you are very welcome to leave your luggage here on the day of departure, to pick up in the evening.
My house is your house, and my guests tend to want to keep it tidy, as I do. There are no time rules or anything, I give you the keys and you are free to come and go as you like. I do have one particular rule though, if you are a smoker. If you could make sure you don't smoke inside, that would be greatly appreciated!
Matthew is a wonderful, charming host. He made us feel very welcome and gave us lots of precious advice about things to see and do. He's interesting to talk to and has a good sense of humour. The accommodation is sunny, clean, comfortable and extremely handy for getting in and out of central London quickly either by tube, bus or on foot if you're a good walker! Thank you, Matthew, for your kind and friendly manner and just being you. Bonne continuation! Barbara and Esther.
We had a really great time in London and at Matthews apartment!
Even if he wasn't there all the time, he was a very friendly and nice host.
He put up small letters around his flat, so we knew everything and what we were allowed to do. We were allowed to use his kitchen and thus we saved much money!
His apartment was very clean and had a fine furniture.
You can get easily and fast to the city and all sights
We recommend everyone a stay at Matthews apartment! It was a great experience!
Matthew is a wonderful, helpful and happy host - he made us feel very at home and gave us all the information we needed on how to get to and from his flat. As many people have said, the flat is in a quiet neighborhood, close to buses, the tube and lots of shops and grocery stores.
Matthew was away when we arrived but instructions were clearly laid out on how to use the flat. The shared kitchen and bathroom had everything we needed and the bedroom had lots of room to unpack.
Overall a very pleasant experience! We highly recommend it! Thank you Matthew for a lovely stay,
Jessie & Alex
It was the great times in the Matthew apartment. Matthew is the very good host.
Immediately we were confortable with him and in the apartment.
But just one thing, the bed is not really confortable for two people.
Great memories !
Thanks a lot.

This was our first trip with airbnb and it was a great experience!
Matthew has been an absolute great host who always gave us tip´s and maps how to explore the city in the best way.
He was always interested in our stories and it was fun and informative to talk with him.
The flat is located in a very quiet part of London so we never had problems with any traffic or city noise. There are a few bus stops near the accommodation so it´s possible to get to all the bridges and sights within 15 minutes. We never took the underground because it was so easy and fast to get access to the center with the red double decker buses.
The flat was super clean and the kitchen was perfectly equipped. Our room had big cupboards so we were possible to place our entire luggage.
So we had a wonderful time in London and thanks to Matthew for all his help, kindness and his beautiful drawn maps.

I am an architect and architectural journalist, I have been an airbnb host, as well as lucky enough to have been a guest many times, from one end of the world to the other - I have airbnb'ed literally from Albuquerque, to Zanzibar!
I can welcome you at my places in London and in Spain. If you are wondering, the picture shows me in a motorway service station in France, showing how far we had got on a trip to Spain (i.e. under half way) before my new car broke down! Hmmm I am not lucky with cars ...
