I rented Whale Bungalow in December 2013. The hosts, Arpana and Shaman Tara were charming and very helpful. We had a few problems but these were quickly resolved with their help and that of the property owners, Agung and Jeru. Jeru cleaned the house very day and was efficient and caring.
The house is a haven of peace and tranquility, a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Ubud and is occasionally enhanced by the music and didgeridoo sounds from Arpana's music studio behind the fence.
I got to know the people in the village of Kutuh Kaja quite well, particularly the young woman who runs the food stall next to the entrance gate. She speaks English well. There is a laundry across the road and Indra is very helpful. At the top end of the village is Made Becik Waroeng (website hidden) where you can get the best food, much cheaper than central Ubud, and they deliver.
To get the best out of your experience in this charming village with its delightful people, it's best to learn to speak Bahasa Indonesia.
The house was clean and spacious and is set in a secluded garden at the back of the property. It has a beautiful, large swimming pool which is shared with Arpana and Shamana Tara. Behind the garden wall are the village's rice fields and beyond them, the steep banks of a small river.
Bali is, like the past, a foreign country. They do things differently there
I'd go back again, preferably for a longer period.
The reservation was canceled 20 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Had an amazing relaxing time. The view from the balcony and bedroom were breathtaking. We spent the weeknd walking the beach and snorkelling from the shore. Amazing fish 2 meters from shore! Very quiet and private villa. The bar was missing a few things, like pop water and beer but there are great little restaurants very close to get all of that. Glad we chose to go up north for our last few days in Bali !
A great little get away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Ubud, but still only a 5 minute scooter away. We really enjoyed our stay here. It was very cute, clean and great to have our own pool. Erik was a fantastic host and organised our airport transfer, scooter hire and fresh coconut on arrival. Would recommend this as a great place to stay.
Erik was a fantastic host - he not only welcomed us to his beautiful home, he also shared so many useful tips about Ubud, places to visit, things to do, restaurants to eat at, etc. Having Erik as a host felt as if having a friend in town, who is there for you no matter what.
The villa itself exceeded my expectations - it is tastefully decorated, comfortable and, most importantly, entertains your ears and soul with the most beautiful sounds of the nature at night and early morning. It's further away from Ubud, hence, not really a walking distance, but if one is looking for a special place to be, this is one of them.
This place is beautiful - arguably even lovelier than the photos. The garden, the cats that come to visit, the sound of crickets and frogs in the evening, it all makes for a perfect getaway in Bali. Erik definitely did his best to make sure we felt welcome. You can also walk to a beautiful little restaurant down the street called Mades.
Heads up: It's about a 10 minute motorcyle ride into Ubud town. If you ride a motorcycle, great! We got one for $5 a day. If not, you might have trouble finding transport to/from the place from town, especially at night.
Great place, great location. Just far enough away from the noise and traffic of Ubud, and a lovely route into town when you want to go in. Made's Warung nearby became our regular hangout. The food's good and the owners & staff were very nice to us.
Erik was very pleasant to deal with and responsive when we had questions or requests. Ketut took good care of us Also, the motorbike we rented was in very good condition. So, I can recommend the villa without hesitation.
One caveat for parents, however. And this is no one's fault but our own. Erik warned us that there was no way to block access to the pool. However, we took a chance because the place looked so nice. Anyway, we ended up playing a LOT of defensive tackle trying to keep our wriggly little one-year-old from drowning himself. He was determined! And it was only possible to completely block access by shutting ourselve in inside, which you don't want to do when the weather's nice.
