Alfie and Kenji were great hosts! We appreciate the pastries they provided in the morning and it was a great location with easy access to the subway. There was some pocket wifi trouble on the first day, but Alfie fixed it for us the next day. The room was very clean and the amenities listed were accurate. Definitely a great place to stay.

This was a lovely place to stay, even better than we expected from the pictures & listing here on Airbnb. We stayed at another Airbnb in Kyoto for 6 nights prior, and while that studio was great, it made us appreciate how spacious and nice Alfie's place is even more. The bed was comfy and our bedroom had plenty of space. We had a fancy Japanese toilet right next to our room (my boyfriend was obsessed with it) and they provided coffee/tea and fruit & pastries for breakfast each morning which was wonderful. It's close enough to the subway stations & major train lines to feel centrally located, but the neighborhood is wonderfully residential and quiet. We realized that the trains stop running fairly early each night (we usually needed to catch the last train back by 12:30am), so if you plan to party late into the night, you may need to find someplace closer to the nightlife action. There are plenty of shops & restaurants nearby Alfie's place though, including a 7-Eleven just a couple blocks away.

Alfie and Kenji are hospitable. The apartment is very clean and comfortable with tasteful minimal decor. Alfie's description on the apartment location is precisely to the dot; one does not need taxi to get to the apartment and can simply follow his instruction. The review by the other guests is also completely accurate.

Alfie's place was spotless as it was shown in pictures. Didn't get a chance to talk to him enough but he was kind and friendly. The logic was perfect. It was very quiet and pretty neighborhood. I think, certainly for me, I felt a bit far from city center and tourist attractions, it wasn't a huge problem though. Highly recommended.

Overall it's ok, but does not quite meet our expectation. Most likely it's because the hostess is out of town and the host is very busy with his work. For example, we went to the house by taking a taxi in the evening. But, somehow the taxi driver entered the address wrong and took us to a wrong place. Since the driver does not speak English, we had a hard time to convince him that he entered a wrong address into his GPS. Worse, the host cannot answer our phone during that time to help us. It took us about half an hour more than usual to get to the house. it's really uneasy for tourists like us to went through this kind of journey in a place you visited for the first time.

Response from Alfie:
Kung and his wife were very friendly, but perhaps they are not well-suited to stay at this type of Airbnb accommodation. As it clearly states in our profile, Kenji and I are both working professionals so don't spend much time at home, but we are always available to answer questions and give recommendations via the Airbnb app or in person in the evenings when we get home from work. Perhaps Kung failed to read that section of our profile and was expecting us to spend more time at home or more time together? Most guests that stay with us actually appreciate that balance and find that they have lots of privacy and are able to use our home very freely and comfortably when we are out of the house, especially compared to other shared Airbnb properties: the convenience of a whole Airbnb property at the price of a private room in a shared property. A quick scroll down through previous guests' comments and ratings clearly reflect that. Although we work full-time, we take our hosting responsibilities and our Super-Host status very seriously. As a matter of fact, for Kung and his wife, I went out of my way to secure a reservation for them at a very popular restaurant which required a few phone calls but which I was happy to do. I also replenished their breakfast items on a daily basis and made sure to have brief chats with them in the evenings after my long days at office to make sure they had everything they needed and were comfortable, as we do with all of our guests. As for the check-in troubles, unfortunately Kung and his wife "lost the manual" that we provided them with very clear and specific directions, a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Map link with the route clearly indicated, GPS Coordinates, our address in English and Japanese, and Japanese directions for the taxi driver, along with specific instructions for unlocking the key box to obtain the house key. Had they provided the taxi driver with those details I provided to them in advance, they would've avoided the inconvenience and would've been able to check in smoothly. I was unavailable to answer the phone as I was in an important business meeting, but I immediately replied to their message on Airbnb reminding them of the instructions that I had already provided, which they then admitted that they "lost the manual." I would urge Kung and his wife to consider alternatives to Airbnb accommodation in the future or perhaps manage their expectations of hosts' responsibilities.

Born & raised in Texas but based in Tokyo now. Run airbnb with my Japanese businesss partner, Kenji. Mature, respectful professionals who work hard but know how to enjoy life. With our Southern/Texas & Japanese backgrounds, hospitality comes quite naturally to us. I studied abroad in Bangkok, Thailand and Paris, France and Kenji studied abroad in NYC during our university days so definitely have a global perspective on things.

Interested in traveling, photography, skin care, cooking, home renovation & interior design. Spent about 3 years designing and renovating the house. Our design aesthetic is clean, modern and uncluttered; a bit Japanesey with a mid-century modern flair. Although we are done with most of our interior design projects, we are continuously looking for ways to improve the comfort and design of our space.

We love good quality food/ingredients, nice wine, and Japanese whiskey. We have a particular weakness for champagne & macarons. We also love collecting good quality cookware and kitchen gadgets and have a small but growing collection of Japanese knives, handmade Japanese ceramic dinnerware, and Japanese crystal barware. Love watching cooking & design shows and never get tired of a good old-fashioned make-over.

I fell in love with Tokyo when I first moved here and haven't stopped being amazed by the city every single day. Best place in the world for food, fashion, and shopping as far as I'm concerned. The most fulfilling part of having guests for me is that it gives me the opportunity to help others discover the city and fall in love with it too.
