This fully-equipped, 500 sq. ft. studio has a separate entrance from the house above & heated cork floors. It has a full bathroom with W/D, kitchenette, dining area, desk & private patio. There's a queen-sized, memory foam mattress, down bedding.
Since our house is located just downhill from Sibley Volcanic Regional Park, wild turkeys, deer, quails, salamanders and other wildlife are common sights. The apartment is comfortable and private: we won't come into the space, so it's like having your own small, but fully functional apartment. The neighborhood is family-oriented, safe, and has a small-town feel. There's often fog in the mornings and evenings, so the air is fresh and clean.
This in-law unit isn't particularly sunny, but it's painted in cheerful colors, clean, and fully-equipped. There's everything you could need to live there: a full bathroom with shower, bathtub, sink and washer/dryer; a kitchenette with an oven, range, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher, toaster oven, and electric kettle. We supply all the glassware, utensils, and cooking ware you could need, as well as some basics cooking supplies. There's also an office area and a dining area to accommodate up to four people. You will sleep like a dream on the memory foam mattress, which rests on a real Japanese tatami bed.
We are a 2-minute drive to Montclair Village, a 5-7 minute drive to Piedmont, a 10-15 minute drive to either downtown Berkeley or downtown Oakland, and a 20-minute drive to San Francisco. Walnut Creek is roughly 15 minutes away, depending on traffic thru the tunnel.
You will be given keys to the apartment, and can come and go as you please. There's free wifi, a parking space for you, and lots of free street parking for your visitors.
We live in the main house upstairs, but we are generally pretty quiet people. Although we will meet you upon arrival, we will stay out of your way, that is, unless you need us for any reason.
Alas, our house was built in the 1920s, and sound insulation isn't terrific. This means that you will hear us walking around, and though you won't be able to hear what we are talking about, occasionally, you may hear us speaking. You may also occasionally hear our little dogs, Nona and Kobe, playing.
If you are new to the area, we are happy to recommend restaurants, give you directions to beautiful hikes in the nearby parklands, and make suggestions about interesting events and venues in the area. If you need anything during your stay, you can simply walk around the house to the upstair entryway, and knock on our door. We want to make sure you are happy, comfortable, and enjoy your stay.
Our neighborhood is a slice of urban heaven! We have the friendliest neighbors and are surrounded by beautiful nature. You can go jogging at midnight (if you so desired) and feel completely safe. There's a stream that flows down Pinehaven Road, and people in our neighborhood do urban farming. There are chickens, goats, and bees.
All that being said, we still live in Oakland, a vibrant but sometimes dangerous city, and street-smarts are just as important in Montclair & Forestland as they are in the inner city. Many thefts (mostly crimes of opportunity) have been reported in the area, especially because Montclair is sometimes targeted as an affluent area. It's very important to lock you vehicle, and to store any bikes and expensive equipment you may be traveling with. We are more than happy to provide you extra storage space free of charge.
Be well advised: there's no easy access to public transportation. We are a 10 minute drive to BART in Rockridge and MacArthur (there's $1 all day parking at BART with valid ticket). You can get there on a bike in 15 minutes, but you should expect some hills and robust exercise. Bus lines go through nearby Montclair Village, but we highly recommend that you have a car or other vehicle for getting around. Otherwise, it is very difficult to get around, and you will feel isolated.
We are very happy to accommodate guests with pets, but an additional $50 deposit is requested and an additional $25 cleaning fee will apply. No more than 2 guests per reservation. Maximum stay 2 months; Minimum stay 5 nights.

My husband and I stayed here while visiting family and our stay was delightful. Jessica and Gilles were very accommodating and extremely prompt on responding to questions and inquiries prior to our arrival and during the stay. When we arrived Jessica lead us to the private suite which has its own separate entrance and gave us a tour, sharing tips on the place and surrounding area. Gilles was helpful as well, sharing his knowledge of the neighborhood with is making getting around on foot easier. The studio was tidy, modern, and looked professionally done. We would definitely stay here again. The hospitality was outstanding!
So glad I found Jessica's place! Pros: quiet, peaceful location, tasteful and practical style, dedicated parking spot, great bed and linens, wonderful hosts. Cons: I'm moving back to Texas.
First experience with Airbnb and it was awesome! Jessica and Gilles were very warm and welcoming and their studio is a cozy and peaceful home away from home. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots and pans and one of my essentials, the french press so it made breakfast a breeze everyday. Jessica and Gilles also provided a folder with lots of suggestions and info that proved super helpful plus they were super prompt with communication but never intrusive, they really were stupendous hosts!
BEST BEST BEST Airbnb experience ever!!!
Jessica and Gilles are amazing hosts. Starting from the very first day, when we were kindly welcomed, we enjoyed every moment spent in this beautiful house. And we were sorry to leave.
There is everything you might need to feel at home. It's not a simple place to sleep and eat but a very well designed studio with separated bedroom area, living/library area, dining area and kitchen. And the kitchen is just awesome!
Big bathroom, washer and dryer (!), private patio to enjoy the sun along with birds and squirrels, bookshelves full of interesting books and beautiful Montclair make this place a dream. We were happy here :)
Jessica and Gilles were always very considerate and responsive, they gave us a list of places to see/go and regularly asked us if we needed anything. They were so easygoing and laid-back, there are definitely happy vibes in their home!
Don't miss a chance to stay in this incredible place and meet Jessica and Gilles. You won't want to leave!
Jessica was amazing! This was probably my favorite airbnb place I have stayed in. Even better than the photos!
Jessica was an incredible host! This was our first experience with airbnb and it was Jessica's first time hosting--what a great first experience. We arrived to a quiet, cozy, and clean space that met all our needs perfectly. Jessica went above and beyond; not only did she answer all of our questions about local restaurants and hikes, she provided us with an extensive list of her favorite places to eat and a map of the local Redwood Regional Park with her favorite hikes highlighted. A truly great experience!
