About this listing

This fully-equipped, ~500 sq. ft. studio has a separate entrance from the house above & heated cork floors. It has a full bathroom with W/D, kitchenette, dining area, desk & private patio. There's a queen-sized, memory foam mattress, down bedding.

The space

Since our house is located at the back of Sibley Volcanic Regional Park, wild turkeys, deer, quails, salamanders and other wildlife are common sights. The apartment is comfortable and private: we won't come into the space, so it's like having your own small, but fully functional apartment. The neighborhood is family-oriented, safe, and has a small-town feel. There's often fog in the mornings and evenings, so the air is fresh and clean.

This in-law unit isn't particularly sunny, but it's painted in cheerful colors, clean, and fully-equipped. There's everything you could need to live there: a full bathroom with shower, bathtub, sink and washer/dryer; a kitchenette with an oven, range, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher, toaster oven, and electric kettle. We supply all the glassware, utensils, and cooking ware you'd need, as well as some basic cooking supplies. There's also an office area and a dining area to accommodate up to four people. You will sleep like a dream on the memory foam mattress, which rests on a Japanese tatami bed.

We are a 2-minute drive to Montclair Village, a 5-7 minute drive to Piedmont, a 10-15 minute drive to either downtown Berkeley or downtown Oakland, and a 20-minute drive to San Francisco. Walnut Creek is roughly 15-20 minutes away, depending on traffic thru the tunnel.

You will be given keys to the apartment, and can come and go as you please. There's free wifi, a parking space for you, and lots of free street parking for your visitors.

We live in the main house upstairs, but we are generally pretty quiet people. Although we will meet you upon arrival, we will stay out of your way--that is, unless you need us for any reason.

Alas, our house was built in the 1920s, and sound insulation isn't terrific. This means that you will hear us walking around, and though you won't be able to hear what we are talking about, occasionally, you may hear us speaking. You may also occasionally hear our little dogs, Nona and Kobe, playing. As of October 2014, we also have a recent addition to our family--a baby daughter, Eloïse, who, though affable, occasionally cries.

If you are new to the area, we are happy to recommend restaurants, give you directions to beautiful hikes in the nearby parklands, and make suggestions about interesting events and venues in the area. If you need anything during your stay, you can simply walk around the house to the upstair entryway, and knock on our door. We want to make sure you are happy, comfortable, and enjoy your stay.

Our neighborhood is a slice of urban heaven! We have the friendliest neighbors and are surrounded by beautiful nature. You could go jogging at midnight (if you so desired) and feel completely safe. There's a stream that flows down Pinehaven Road, and people in our neighborhood do urban farming. There are chickens, goats, and bees.

All that being said, we still live in Oakland, a vibrant but sometimes dangerous city, and street-smarts are just as important in Montclair & Forestland as they are in the inner city. Many thefts (mostly crimes of opportunity) have been reported in the area, especially because Montclair is sometimes targeted as an affluent area. It's very important to lock you vehicle, and to store any bikes and expensive equipment you may be traveling with. We are more than happy to provide you extra storage space free of charge, but the apartment does have a storage closet.

Be well advised: there's *no* easy access to public transportation. We are a 10 minute drive to BART in Rockridge and MacArthur (there's $1 all day parking at BART with valid ticket). You can get there on a bike in 15 minutes, but you should expect some hills and robust exercise. Bus lines go through nearby Montclair Village, but we highly recommend that you have a car, motorcycle or other vehicle for getting around. Otherwise, you may feel isolated.

We are very happy to accommodate guests with pets, but an additional $50 deposit is requested and an additional $25 cleaning fee will apply. No more than 2 guests per reservation. Maximum stay 2 months; Minimum stay 1 week. Also please note that as of March 2014, the furnishing in the lounge area will be updated with a small sofa and coffee table.

This place is an absolute gem! Comfortable, clean and nestled amongst the beauty of Montclair Village and Sibley forest. My husband and I stayed here for a month after we both got jobs in the Bay area and we really loved it here. The space itself is beautiful and has everything you could need. It was excellently appointed for our stay. Just about 10 minutes from the Rockridge BART stop and lots of fun restaurants and shopping. Centrally located, but secluded enough to be close to nature and parks. Love this place!

Jessica and Gilles were very welcoming and accommodating as soon as I booked. When I arrived Jessica gave me a tour as well as some near by places to go. It was great that there was a washer and dryer! There was a full, adorable, little kitchen! The shower had super hot water with great water pressure. Everything you could need was available from dishes, to pots and pans, extra linens and cleaning supplies. The neighborhood is quiet but lots of wildlife. I had my dog and cat with me and they were warmly accepted and welcomed! The only downside is that it did get a bit warm as there was no air conditioning but since I stayed for a whole month I bought a fan and it stayed mostly comfortable. There were a few minor issues and Jessica and Gilles were quick to respond and fix the problems. I especially enjoyed that fact that this apartment is in Oakland but you would never know it by looking out your window. Secluded enough to feel safe out and about walking my dog at night or going to the ATM at 3 am. It's a wonderful area and so close to all of the amazing things Oakland has to offer!

Jessica and Gilles are gracious and respectful hosts who have made my stay at the studio very comfortable. The space is true to the images and description on Airbnb. It's clean, modern, and has all of the amenities a guest needs to stay overnight or, in my case, for several months. The neighborhood is beautiful and safe, blanketed in lush greenery and blooming flowers. It's a stone's throw from hiking trails and downtown Oakland, and a short drive to SF. I appreciate that my dog was also a welcome guest. I'd highly recommend the studio to anyone seeking lodging in Oakland. Thank you Jessica and Gilles for a lovely stay!

We couldn't have asked for a better place or hosts. The studio was perfect....exactly what we needed. Jessica and Gille were very helpful, accommodating, and quick to respond to our requests. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at their place again.

We loved this place! It's cozy, very well design, it has everything you need in a tiny cute way. The surroundings are beautiful, full of trees, clean air and natural sounds. Jessica and Gilles were great hosts, really helpful, with many ideas and answers to our questions. This place it's a great spot to get to know Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda and even San Francisco. We traveled with our two indoor cats and it was a perfect place for them, it has window screens so we felt always safe to open the windows. We definitely will come back to Jessica's in law, we liked it very much!

The studio apartment was perfect for us. We ended up extending our stay for a second month and Jessica was the most gracious host.

Jessica was extremely welcoming. Perfect hosts were extremely accomodating, but also gave us complete privacy. We ended up extending our stay here another month and would have loved to stay longer. First AirBnB experience and it was excellent!

I am a doctoral candidate in the History of Art Department at University of California, Berkeley. My area of specialty is sixteenth-century Northern European art, and have traveled a lot in Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands. I also work part-time at an academic journal. I love living in Oakland with my partner Gilles and our little Italian Greyhound, Kobe. We also recently rescued a little Chihuahua mix, Nona. We often go for hikes at the regional parks near our house. We are a quiet bunch, but we are epicureans and enjoy the finer things in life. I live by the golden rule, and do my best to make sure that the only affect I have on other people's lives is for the positive.
