Nestled on a hectare of manicured grounds, Casa Playa Agujas is a two-story rustic country villa with most of the comforts and conveniences of home but all of the spectacle of the Osa jungle and raw coastal beach and mangrove wetlands bounding picturesque Golfo Dulce with coastal ridge on the eastern horizon and the the Talamanca Mountains a lavendar ribbon beyond them.
Downstairs we have a full kitchen/dining area and living area, no walls, and a full bathroom. Covered porches wrap around two sides and are outfitted with four hammocks and are great lounging and common areas with large overhangs that make it the best spot for enjoying torrential downpours when they come. The kitchen includes a full fridge with a freezer compartment and a large new propane stove and oven. The house is fully outfitted with cookware, plates and silverware, and has great counter space, great for cooking, and a table that seats eight. We have a washing machine, but no dryer, so line drying only.
The upstairs is the sleeping area and includes two individual bedrooms, each outfitted with a double bed and closet. The bunkroom adjoins these two bedrooms and has three bunk beds, so the total occupancy that can sleep in beds is ten, assuming two people in each of the private bedrooms. The upstairs master bedroom has a full bathroom, but this has no separate access to the other two sleeping rooms, though of course there is another bathroom downstairs.
The house is open air, screened in, and while privacy walls provide visual privacy to the two bedrooms, the upper walls stop at ceiling level and separation above that is by screen. So, there is no aural privacy, meaning couples among groups should accommodate themselves to the idea of furtive coupling to avoid disturbing the slumber of your housemates.
We have two kayaks for guest use in the tranquil waters of the gulf. Our location is in a portion of the Golfo Dulce that is shielded from Pacific Ocean swells and wave action, so the gulf shoreline is more like a lake than the beach. There are NO waves, so body surfers need not apply. However, their are also no currents making this the safest ocean swimming for the very young anywhere. Also the bottom is flat, and the flats extend several hundred meters from the shoreline at high tide, so you can wade and swim in chest deep water at high tide without worries about dropping off into the deep, and there are no currents.
We have a pebble beach that opens onto the gulf, but the predominant habitat along our coastline is mangrove ecosystem, and tendrils that rise on either side of our beach merge in either direction with larger mangrove ecosystems, particularly of course at the estuary mouths of nearby streams that drain the peninsular highlands. Fishing is great, though you have to bring your own gear or make arrangements with us for gear plus or minus a guide for an added fee to take advantage of this great in house option. Think jack, snapper, roosterfish, snook, pompano, mackerel, barracuda . . . you never know what's going to be on the end of your line.
The Playa Agujas grounds are an arboretum of fruit trees and a botanical garden of ornamentals. We have mango, mandarin lime, banana, plantain, water apple, all on our grounds, so help yourself to whatever is in season. The grounds are well-maintained and great for barefoot wanderings. A gravel path wends to the beach, and there is a picnic table in the front yard. Parking is in the lawn beside the house, and we boast broadband Internet connection.
